[Occupational exposure to vibration: Raynaud's phenomenon and the vascular response to methacholine iontophoresis].

A homogeneous group of 34 subjects exposed to occupational vibratory stress were studied to determine their vasodilatory response to methacoline. The methacoline was administered by iontophoresis. Methacoline is an acetylcholine derivate with the same pharmacological properties of acetylcholine. The 34 study subjects were divided into 3 groups according to their plethysmographic response to a preliminary cold test: group 1, had a typical Raynaud's response; group 2 had normal response to cold, and group 3 had an "intermediate" response. The subjects in group 1 did not respond to methacoline wi

Cutaneous responses to endothelin-1 and histamine in patients with vibration white finger.

Vibration white finger (VWF) is the episodic blanching of the fingers that occurs in response to cold in those who work with hand-held vibrating tools. Clinically the condition differs from primary Raynaud's phenomenon as persistent pain and paresthesia are common in the hands and arms and occur independently of the "white attacks." We have previously reported a decrease in protein gene product 9.5 and calcitonin gene-related peptide-immunoreactive nerve fibers in the digital skin of individuals with VWF. In this study, we have sought to determine whether this deficit of immunoreactive sensory…

Low back pain disorders and exposure to whole-body vibration in the workplace.

Occupational exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) and postural stress in a driving environment may contribute to an increased risk for low back pain (LBP) disorders. In two epidemiological studies of bus drivers and tractor drivers, LBP disorders were found to be associated with age, back accidents, cumulative WBV dose, and postural overload. A review of the literature showed that the exposure-response relationship for WBV and injuries to the lower back is not fully clarified. There is a shortage of information on the health risk from WBV in female workers. Because it is estimated that sever…

Influence of sympathetic activity, temperature, ischemia and diazepam on thermal and vibration thresholds.

In healthy volunteers thermal specific, thermal pain and vibration thresholds were assessed and correlated to each other and to sympathetic nervous system parameters. Additionally, different factors such as temperature, diazepam and ischemia affecting perception thresholds were evaluated. The thresholds assessed did not correlate significantly to each other and to sympathetic skin response latency or amplitude. Diazepam influenced the thermal specific, thermal pain and vibration thresholds assessed. The preingestion and postingestion (after 30, 60 and 90 minutes) thresholds did not differ sign…

Alteration of human cutaneous afferent discharges as the result of long-lasting vibration.

The unitary activities of slowly (15 SAI) and fast-adapting type I (12 FAI) skin mechanoreceptive afferent units innervating the anterior part of the human leg and foot were recorded by using the microneurographic method. The recordings were performed both at rest and on application of cutaneous stimuli of various intensities before and after exposure of the corresponding receptive fields to vibration (0.5 mm peak to peak, 100 pulses/s, 10 min). The results show that 11% of the units tested, which were previously silent, developed a bursting pattern of postvibratory activity, which lasted 12 m…

Effect of hand-arm vibration on inner ear and cardiac functions in man.

To evaluate distant effects of hand-arm vibration we studied Finnish forestry workers using chain saw during the years 1972 through 1990. The hearing was tested annually and individual regression curves for sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) were calculated. Robinson's model was used in prediction of SHL. The heart rate variation (HRV) indexes at rest and during deep breathing test were analyzed to measure autonomic nervous function. In Robinson's model the measured SHL (17.8 dB) respected the predicted SHL (17.2 dB). The subjects with VWF had on average, 10 dB greater hearing loss than those wh…

[Analysis of the interference electromyogram of human soleus muscle after exposure to vibration].

The properties of m. soleus surface EMG recorded under conditions of voluntary contraction against vibrational stimulation were studied using vibration-triggered averaging and spectral estimates. The averaging procedure indicated EMG bursts locked to the vibration cycle. Narrow peaks appeared in the EMG spectrum at vibration frequency and harmonics. These effects were more pronounced in rectified EMG at low vibration frequencies (30-70 Hz) and in EMG at high frequencies (70-120 Hz). The disappearance of the peak after ischemic blockade preceded that of the tendon reflex. The peak normalized to…

Effects of vibration frequency and tissue thickness on intrauterine sound levels in sheep.

Pure-tone sinusoidal mechanical vibratory stimuli ranging in frequency from 4 to 4000 Hz were applied to the ventral abdominal wall of pregnant ewes, and intrauterine sound pressure levels were recorded with a hydrophone 5, 10, 15, and 20 cm from the surface. There were significant decreases in sound pressure levels with increasing frequencies (p less than 0.0001) and increasing depth (p = 0.01). There was no significant interaction between these two variables. An electronic artificial larynx was also activated on the abdominal wall, resulting in quite high sound pressure levels (mean, 119 dB)

Detection of clustered gastrointestinal contractions in partial intestinal obstruction by surface vibration analysis.

Gastrointestinal contraction "clusters" with alternating quiescence occur in partial intestinal obstruction and are conventionally detected by intraluminal manometry. Surface Vibration Analysis (SVA), which is a noninvasive test, was evaluated in this study in experimental and clinical situations. In the experimental situation, former SVA was assessed against simultaneous manometry in two volunteers, in whom partial obstruction had been induced by intrajejunal balloon distension. Manometry showed typical contraction "clusters" with alternating quiescence, each of two to four minutes duration, …

A review of 132 consecutive patients referred for assessment of vibration white finger.

One hundred and thirty-two subjects were referred to the Institute of Occupational Health in Birmingham over a 2 year period for assessment as to whether they met the criteria for Prescribed Disease A11 (vibration white finger). A standardized questionnaire and checklist was used, and each patient with vibration white finger was staged according to the Taylor and Pelmear (1975) classification. One hundred and sixteen subjects (88 per cent) had a clinical picture consistent with a diagnosis of vibration white finger, of which 10 did not meet the DHSS criteria for prescription. For these 116 sub…

The effect of two sites of high frequency vibration on cutaneous pain threshold.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of two sites of high frequency vibration on experimentally produced pain thresholds. Subjects were assigned to one of two experimental groups. Vibration was applied proximal to the site of pain threshold measurement in one group and distal to the measurement site in the other group. The cutaneous pain threshold was measured at the ulnar aspect of the wrist in both groups prior to, during, and following 5 min of vibration. Subjects were 30 right-handed, Caucasian males with a negative history of upper extremity dysfunction. A repeated measure…

Increase of vibration threshold during wrist flexion in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome.

The most prominent symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are sensory, with intermittent numbness, paraesthesiae and pain in the fingers innervated by the median nerve. No consistent signs are found by neurological examination, however. Conventional sensibility tests are positive in only about 50% of the cases. This applies also to quantitative tests such as measurement of the perception threshold for vibration (VT). In an attempt to find a more reliable indication and improve the diagnostic value of sensory testing, determination of VT was combined with provocation by means of wrist flexion…

Analgesic effect of vibration and cooling on pain induced by intraneural electrical stimulation.

Psychophysical experiments were carried out on 16 human subjects to determine how low intensity mechanical and thermal skin stimuli interfere with the sensation of pain. Moderate or intense pain was induced by low frequency (2 Hz) electrical stimulation within cutaneous fascicles of the median nerve at wrist level, and vibration, pressure, cooling or warming were applied for short periods (usually 20-60 sec) within or outside the skin area to which the pain was projected. Vibration within the area of projected pain reduced the sensation of pain more efficiently than vibration outside that area…

The influence of noise and vibration upon creatine kinase activity in blood serum.

The investigations comprised part of the workers employed in a factory of prefabricated concrete elements. The creatine kinase (CK) activity was determined before and after a day's work in the following groups of workers: I-exposed to noise and vibration exceeding the allowed norm, II- exposed to noise, performing the same hard physical work as group I and exposed to vibration not exceeding 79dB in particular octave bands, III- practising physical work a group I and II but in environment free from noise and vibration, and a control group of persons (C) not exposed to any of the tested factors …

[Ergonomical studies about the superposition of control activity and mechanical vibration (author's transl)].

The effects of combined stresses due to control activity and vertical mechanical vibration on man are analysed. In the first part, the processes in the human being at those superposed stresses are shown in a deterministic way, starting from morphological and physiological facts, which leads to a division of the organismic data processing in the fields of information reception, central information processing and information output. Hypothesis of the effects of vibration in the parts of information reception and information output as well as indications to measurable variables at laboratory expe…

[Relations between working conditions and occurrence of vibration disease in forestry workers. I].

The level of mechanic vibrations intensity of 20 motor saws of the BK-3a type and 5 saws of the Partner R-11 type was determined and the evaluation of 460 motorsawers' vibration exposure--in case of working on these types of saws--was performed. The evaluation covered saws of various technical conditions, with which felling, cross-cutting and trimming of soft and hard timber were performed. The vibration measured exceeds 3--5 times Soviet hygienic normatives and ISO, especially in octave frequencies of 63 and 125 Hz. The intensity level of vibrations was significantly dependent on the technica…
