Ambulatory encounters in a community-based family practice residency program were analyzed using diagnosis clusters. During an 18-month period (July 1982 through December 1983), demographic information and clinical diagnoses for 44,453 successive patient visits were collected and stored in a computerized data base. The 30 most frequent diagnosis clusters accounted for 70% of all recorded clinical diagnoses. The incidence of acute rheumatic fever has declined remarkably in the past three decades, but the disease has not been eradicated, as some physicians believe. This study documents the diagnosis of the disease in 23 middle-class children from Fairfax County, Virginia, during the 11-year-period from 1970 through 1980. This county has one of the highest median family incomes in the United States. The purpose of this article is to determine and quantify the factors associated with the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) mortality rate in the United States, based on an analysis of state-level data. From 1990 through 1999, there were about 2400 reported deaths in the U.S. involving ATVs. We reviewed the records of patients with cecal volvulus at three affiliated hospitals of Eastern Virginia Medical School to elucidate its incidence, patterns of presentation, and current methods of surgical management. We identified 109 patients in whom a discharge diagnosis of intestinal obstruction due to volvulus was made from 1966 to 1985. An analysis of HLA (A and B) recipient-donor matching on the outcome of 105 cadaver kidney transplants performed at the Medical College of Virginia transplant center revealed that there is a significant, overall difference (P = 0.03) between recipients receiving kidneys mismatched at two or less HLA loci versus recipients mismatched at three or more loci, the fewer mismatch category showing a better graft survival. BACKGROUND: Trauma patients requiring acute inpatient rehabilitation are significantly injured, with increased risk for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We evaluated routine screening for occult DVT in such patients, and analyzed DVT risk factors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from level I trauma center patients discharged to a single acute rehabilitation center (ARC) from 2007-2011 were retrospectively reviewed.
