As an emerging adsorbent, biochar has shown a broad application prospect in the field of environmental remediation. However, in recent years, many studies have confirmed that their own pollutants have potential environmental risks in practical application. This paper summarizes the source of biochar endogenous inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, metalloid, etc.) and organic pollutants (PAHs, EPFRs, etc.), occurrence characteristics, and potential environmental application risk and further explores the environmental release mechanism of biochar endogenous pollutants (physical release, chemical

Hazardous substances that originally are discharged as air pollutants may find their pathway to human exposure through multiple routes, including ingestion and dermal contact, as well as direct inhalation. The mechanisms for modeling and understanding the fate of air pollutants through atmospheric transport, deposition into water and soil, bioaccumulation, and ultimate uptake to receptor organs and systems in the human body are complex. Pollution prevention programs can be better engineered, pollution priorities can be identified, and greater environmental public health gains (attributable to

Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE), Bangladesh first identified their groundwater arsenic contamination in 1993. But before the international arsenic conference in Dhaka in February 1998, the problem was not widely accepted. Even in the international arsenic conference in West-Bengal, India in February, 1995, representatives of international agencies in Bangladesh and Bangladesh government attended the conference but they denied the groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh. School of Environmental Studies (SOES), Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India first identified arsenic p

The surface sediments from eleven sectors perpendicular to the Egyptian Mediterranean Sea coast, along the delta region, have been assessed. These sectors cover areas of Eastern Harbour, Abu Qir Bay, Rosetta, Abo Khashaba, Burullus, Baltim, Damietta, and Manzala. The assessment process is based on determining the eight metals' (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Ni, Co, Pb, and Cd) content, followed by applying different pollution and ecological risk indices such as enrichment factor (EF), geoaccumulation factor (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), Pollution Load Index (PLI), degree of contamination (Cdeg.), Nemer

Surface waters in Europe and North America are slowly recovering from acidification following major reductions in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO(2)) since the 1980s. In contrast, regions affected by acid rain have been reported to be growing in China. Here we show that the rapid change in surface water chemistry in the 1990s in large areas in Southwestern China, specifically the tributary rivers of the Upper Yangtze River, caused by increasing SO(2) emissions, has leveled off. During the 1990s the sulfate (SO(4)(2-)) concentrations in river water increased rapidly and, on average, doubled in

A proof-of-concept approach is introduced that uses silver nanoparticles modified with Epimedium plant extract (EE-AgNPs) for BPA detection. The EE-AgNPs aggregate in the presence of BPA, demonstrating a measurable color change. This color change is monitored via a smartphone, enabling the prompt on-site determination of BPA. The sensor exhibited a linear response within the range 0.1-50 µM and a limit of detection (LOD) of 22 nM, which is below the thresholds set by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of China, and European Union'

A batch reactor was used to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidation process of the organic pollutants in biologically treated wastewater effluents with UV/H2O2. A 450-W high-pressure mercury vapor lamp was used as the light source. During the degradation process, the concentration of the dissolved organic compounds could be increased by more than twofold due to the decomposition of microorganisms. This increase of the dissolved organic compounds was eliminated if the water was filtered before the photodegradation experiments. It is observed that the UV alone could play a role for the oxi

Lithuania's environment is heavily polluted as a result of domestic and transboundary contamination. The main ecological problems are related to atmospheric pollution; water contamination; soil, water, and forest acidification; nitrogen-compounds overload of soil, water, and food; and contamination with agricultural chemicals and heavy metals. The increased environmental distress is a menace to public health in Lithuania. Experimental studies need to be designed and used to ascertain the effects of environmental distress on the gastrointestinal tract epithelial barrier. Our electronmicroscopic

A pilot study to test methods of estimating personal exposures to toxic substances and corresponding body burdens was carried out between July and December 1980. Individual exposures to about a dozen volatile organic compounds in air and drinking water were measured for nine volunteers in Bayonne and Elizabeth, New Jersey, and for three volunteers in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina during three 3-day visits over the 6-month period. Breath samples were also collected from all subjects on each visit. Composite food samples were collected in each locality. Sampling and analytical methods f

As a major country of producer and user of antibiotics, China is likely to have an increased risk of antibiotic contamination in tap water, but relevant data remain limited. We selected 78 tap water samples from 33 of 34 provincial-level administrative regions in China, determined 34 representative antibiotics and their four transformed species in tap water, and assessed the health risks by hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) based on the ratio of estimated daily intake (EDI) to current human safety thresholds. A total of 13 antibiotics and four transformed species were detected in tap

Phosphorus (P) limitation has been demonstrated for micro-polluted surface water denitrification treatment in previous study. In this paper, a lab-scale comparative study of autotrophic denitrification (ADN) and heterotrophic denitrification (HDN) in phosphorus-limited surface water was investigated, aiming to find out the optimal nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) ratio and the mechanism of the effect of P limitation on ADN and HDN. Furthermore, the optimal denitrification process was applied to the West Lake denitrification project, aiming to improve the water quality of the West Lake from worse than

The Environmental Protection Agency of the Campania region in Italy (ARPAC) manages a groundwater quality monitoring network. For almost all the polluted waters, the key parameter driving the classification is the concentration of nitrate; hence, the Campania region, in coherence with the EU regulations, outlined the vulnerable areas and undertook remediation policies. The best groundwater quality is recorded for carbonate aquifers of the Apennine chain; on the contrary, the Tyrrhenian coastal plains are affected by severe contamination, with a locally very contaminated groundwater of the shal

Regularly ingesting water with elevated arsenic increases adverse health risks. Since September 2002, the NJ Private Well Testing Act (PWTA) has required testing untreated well water for arsenic during real estate transactions in 12 counties. Its implementation provides an opportunity to investigate the effects of policy intervention on well testing and treatment behavior. Here we analyze results of a survey mailed to 1943 random addresses (37% response), including responses from 502 private well households who purchased their homes prior to PWTA commencement and 168 who purchased after. We fi

The iron-activated peracetic acid (PAA) system is a novel green advanced oxidation process (AOP), but conventional Fe(III)-activated PAA systems suffer from low efficiency and require co-activator for iron cycling. This study demonstrated efficient degradation of the organic pollutant Naphthol Blue Black (NBB) in a Fe(III)/PAA system without additional co-activator, achieving 95.7 % removal within 7 min, slightly higher than that observed with Fe(II). The degradation efficiency of NBB increased with appropriate elevation of initial concentrations of Fe(III), NBB, and PAA, but was inhibited und

This study investigates the effects of inorganic salts and natural water matrices on the high-frequency sonochemical degradation of Naphthol Blue Black (NBB). Experiments were conducted at 585 kHz and 3.58 W/cm2 using initial NBB concentrations of 5 mg/L (8.11 × 10-6M) and 30 mg/L (4.87 × 10-5 M). NaCl, KNO3, Na2SO4, and NaHCO3 were evaluated over broad concentration ranges and compared with bicarbonate-rich Ca-Mg mineral water and seawater. The response depended strongly on ion identity and pollutant loading. Chloride produced the most persistent enhancement, nitrate showed a more modest posi

South African rivers generally receive waste from inadequate wastewater infrastructure, mines, and farming activities, among others. The uMsunduzi River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is among these recipients with recorded poor to very poor water quality. To identify parts of the uMsunduzi River that are polluted by Cryptosporidium and Escherichia coli (E. coli), this study mapped out pollutants emanating from point and non-point sources using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Streamflow calibration in the upper and lower reaches of the catchment showed good performance with R2 of 0
