Becker's disease is a congenital myotonia with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Unlike myotonic dystrophy, it is not associated with cardiopathy. We present a 32-year-old man with Becker's disease diagnosed at age 11. He suffered episodes of loss of consciousness preceded by palpitations when he performed strenuous physical exercise. The electrocardiogram reveals a Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Review of the literature in MEDLINE using the search terms of congenital myotonia or Becker's disease and arrhythmia or heart disease only found 2 articles on Thomsen disease but none on…

Rabbits obtained from a South African rabbit breeder exhibited deformities of the distal forelimbs. The clinical, radiological and histological presentation of mid-antebrachial valgus formation (a.k.a distal foreleg curvature) in these rabbits was consistent with an autosomal recessive trait associated with a chondrodystrophic lesion of the distal ulna epiphysis 1st described in the 1960s. The impact this might have on South African farming enterprises and laboratory facilities has not been established, but the heritability and welfare implications of this condition make it a concern. Mildly a

To understand basic tactile perception using white canes, we compared tapping (two times) and pushing (two times) methods using the index finger and using a white cane, with and without accompanying auditory information. Participants were six visually impaired individuals who used a white cane to walk independently in their daily lives. For each of the tapping and pushing and sound or no sound conditions, participants gave magnitude estimates for the hardness of rubber panels. Results indicated that using a white cane produces sensitivity levels equal to using a finger when accompanied by audi…

Superficial mycoses are fungal infections limited to the stratum corneum and its adnexal structures. The most frequent types are dermatophytoses or tineas. Tinea versicolor involves the skin in the form of hypochromic or hyperchromic plaques, and tinea nigra affects the skin of the palms with dark plaques. White piedra and black piedra are parasitic infections of scalp hairs in the form of concretions caused by fungal growth. Diagnosis of these mycoses is made from mycologic studies, direct examination, stains, and isolation, and identification of the fungi. Treatment includes systemic antifun…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an idiopathic mostly relapsing inflammatory disease with attacks on the optic nerves and spinal cord. Whether NMO is a separate disease or a subtype of classic multiple sclerosis (MS) is unclear. Clinically, CSF and MR imaging parameters and histopathologic data suggest that the normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) may be affected in MS but not in patients with NMO. Therefore, we hypothesized that the NAWM in NMO is normal.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied prospectively 8 patients with clinically definitive NMO or remitting longitudinal ex…

OBJECTIVES: In other disciplines, white matter (WM) differences have been linked to cognitive impairments. This study sets out to clarify whether similar microstructural differences in WM tracts predict a person's cognitive vulnerability to the effects of total sleep deprivation (TSD).
DESIGN: Participants completed a simple visual-motor task both before and after 24 h of TSD. Using a median split on the percent change in accuracy from pre-TSD to post-TSD, participants were separated into susceptibility groups. A diffusion tensor MR imaging (DTI) scan was acquired from each participant, and f…

Early visual deprivation may lead to both abnormal and plastic changes in the visual and other systems of the brain. Such secondary changes in the gray matter of the early blind have been well studied, but not so well in the cerebral white matter whose subtle changes may be revealed by diffusion tensor imaging. The first purpose of this study is to explore the possible changed white matter regions of the early blind in whole brain manners, using voxel-based analysis (VBA) and tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) methods. The second purpose is to investigate the changes of diffusion eigenvalue…

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantify both load and regional distributions of hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in prospectively verified euthymic bipolar patients and matched controls.
METHOD: Cerebral hyperintensities on T2, proton density and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) MRI were compared between 48 bipolar and 47 control subjects using semi-quantitative rating scales.
RESULTS: Bipolar subjects had more severe frontal deep white matter lesions (DWML). Hyperintensity load was independent of age in bipolar patients but increased with age in controls. Global preva…

White matter injury (WMI) is the characteristic pattern of brain injury detected on magnetic resonance imaging in the premature newborn. Focal noncystic WMI is increasingly recognized in populations of term newborns. The aim of this study was to describe the occurrence of focal noncystic WMI in a cohort of 48 term newborns with encephalopathy studied with magnetic resonance imaging at 72 +/- 12 h of life, and to identify clinical risk factors for this pattern of injury. Eleven newborns (23%; 95% CI 11-35) were found to have WMI (four minimal, three moderate, and four severe). In 10 of the 11 n…

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome occurring in association with tuberous sclerosis is rare in adults. Electrocardiography and echocardiography should be routinely performed in the assessment of patients with tuberous sclerosis as sudden cardiac death may be the first manifestation of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in previously asymptomatic individuals. We report a case of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome in a 20-year-old female with tuberous sclerosis.

Lesions of the cerebral white matter (WM) result in focal neurobehavioral syndromes, neuropsychiatric phenomena, and dementia. The cerebral WM contains fiber pathways that convey axons linking cerebral cortical areas with each other and with subcortical structures, facilitating the distributed neural circuits that subserve sensorimotor function, intellect, and emotion. Recent neuroanatomical investigations reveal that these neural circuits are topographically linked by five groupings of fiber tracts emanating from every neocortical area: (1) cortico-cortical association fibers; (2) corticostri…

The following structures were systematically reviewed: ventricles, corpus callosum, gray and white matter, limbic system, basal ganglia, brainstem, and cerebellum.
RESULTS: Ten out of 90 (11%) were referred with DD only, whilst 80/90 (89%) were referred with DD and additional clinical findings, such as seizures, neurological deficit, and abnorma …

OBJECTIVE: Functional imaging studies of panic disorder subjects suggest an increased activation of the cingulate regions of the brain. Aim of the current study was to explore the white matter connectivity differences between subjects with panic disorder and healthy comparison subjects.
METHOD: Structural white matter connectivity, as determined from fractional anisotropy (FA) values obtained by diffusion tensor imaging, was assessed for anterior and posterior cingulate regions in 24 panic disorder patients and 24 age and sex-matched healthy comparison subjects.
RESULTS: Subjects with panic …

We investigated whether structural white matter abnormalities, in the form of disruption of axonal coherence and integrity as measured with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), constitute an underlying pathological mechanism of idiopathic dystonia (ID), independent of genotype status. We studied seven subjects with ID: all had cervical dystonia as their main symptom (one patient also had spasmodic dysphonia and two patients had concurrent generalized dystonia, both DYT1-negative). We compared DTI MR images of patients with 10 controls, evaluating differences in mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional …

A 34-year-old oligophrenic woman was admitted in comatose state with marked tachypnea. History revealed the oral ingestion of a large amount … ntegration and caspase-3 activation in glial cells, whereas, grey matter changes were sparse. Acute white matter damage is suggested to be the substrate of cerebral dysfunction in salicylate intoxication and possible mechanisms are discussed.
