OBJECTIVE: We studied the impact of work-related factors on the outcome in patients operated for carpal tunnel syndrome.
METHODS: The population consisted of 106 CTS patients who worked at the time of operation. We registered social and occupational data from the patients.
RESULTS: Median time of sick leave was 7 weeks for the total group. Sixty-four percent reported a relationship between their work and the disease. Eighty-nine percent of the operated patients returned to their previous work after operation.

In order to assess occupational hearing loss, damage to outer hair cell function must be demonstrated. Measurements of transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion products (DPOAE) allow clinicians to investigate objectively the cochlear amplification process. In this prospective study, 50 persons with suspected occupational hearing losses were tested with pure-tone and speech audiometry. Additionally, TEOAE and DPAOE were determined. A carefully controlled prospective study was made of 66 men aged 17 to 48 with minor head injuries. The mean time off work was 4.7 days, range 0 to 26 days. Otological and audiological evaluations were performed on 278 miners claiming compensation for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Of the total sample, 28.7% had to be excluded as cases of nonmining NIHL.
