Perceptual span asymmetry reconsidered: The case of Japanese.

The Japanese writing system combines visually intricate logographic kanji with simpler phonographic kana. Moreover, Japanese is a subject-object-verb (SOV), head-final language with flexible word order, which often increases structural complexity and imposes additional cognitive demands during sentence processing. Despite these unique features, the spatial limit of visual processing in Japanese has not been thoroughly investigated. To identify the perceptual span, the present study employed a gaze-contingent moving window paradigm to measure the amount of information acquired per fixation in t…

Dynamic Assessment for Literacy: Utility in Children With Difficulties of Different Socioeconomic Status.

Although children who grow up in a low socioeconomic situation present deficits in literacy skills, the present research aimed to shed light on the skills they possess and how detecting them can help improve their development. A total of 439 children were analysed for their literacy skills, learning potential in reading- and writing-related skills as determined by dynamic assessment methodology, and behaviour during the test situation. Participants belonged to three groups: children with socioeconomic disadvantage, children with literacy difficulties and children with typical development. Resu…

Could pure agraphia be the only sign of stroke? Lessons from two case reports.

Agraphia is defined as the disruption of the previously intact writing skills due to an acquired brain damage. Stroke remains the most common cause of language impairment; however, writing disorders, including agraphia, are underestimated in patients with stroke. In this regard, we report two patients presenting with pure agraphia as an early symptom of stroke. Both patients complained of at least two difficulties in visualizing letter formation beforehand, the frequent need for verbal cues, misuse of lines and margins, poorly legible signature, and writing and thinking at the same time (e.g.,…

Selective Impairments in Covert Shifts of Attention in Chinese Dyslexic Children.

Reading depends heavily on the efficient shift of attention. Mounting evidence has suggested that dyslexics have deficits in covert attentional shift. However, it remains unclear whether dyslexics also have deficits in overt attentional shift. With the majority of relevant studies carried out in alphabetic writing systems, it is also unknown whether the attentional deficits observed in dyslexics are restricted to a particular writing system. The present study examined inhibition of return (IOR)-a major driving force of attentional shifts-in dyslexic children learning to read a logographic scri…

Neuropsychological stability and prognosis of subgroups of children with learning disabilities.

A sample of 74 Finnish children with mild learning disabilities (LD) and 57 controls was followed from the third grade (Study 1) to the sixth grade (Study 2). In the initial study, the sample had been grouped into five valid subgroups (Normal, General Language, Visuo-Motor, General Deficiency, Naming) utilizing a cluster analysis. In both studies a battery of 12 neuropsychological, reading, and writing tests was administered, and teacher ratings were obtained. The results indicated that the general neuropsychological profiles of the subgroups were maintained, but some changes, consistent with …

Postcallosotomy language impairments in patients with crossed cerebral dominance.

Language impairments were reviewed retrospectively in patients who underwent partial or total corpus callosum section for medically refractory secondary generalized epilepsy. Postoperatively, four of 32 patients had clinically significant language impairments that were not present prior to the operation. All involved primarily verbal output (speech and writing) and spared verbal comprehension. Written language skills (reading and spelling), verbal memory, and verbal reasoning abilities were impaired to varying degrees. These impairments were associated with crossed cerebral dominance. Three pa…

Betrayal trauma: relationship to physical health, psychological distress, and a written disclosure intervention.

In the current study we sought, first, to distinguish associations with health arising from types of trauma as indicated by betrayal trauma theory (Freyd, 1996, 2001), and, second, to investigate the impact of disclosing a trauma history in survey form and/or writing essays about betrayal traumas. We recruited 99 community adults reporting at least 12 months of chronic medical illness or pain, 80 of whom completed all four sessions of this six-month longitudinal intervention study. Participants were randomly assigned to write about betrayal traumas or neutral events, and they were randomly ass…

The effect of the "Tears of Life" situational puzzle board game on death anxiety among nursing students: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of death education using a situational puzzle board game versus reflective writing on nursing students' death anxiety, self-esteem and sense of meaning in life. BACKGROUND: Pre-clinical nursing students often exhibit high death anxiety due to limited clinical experience, potentially compromising future palliative care quality. Game-based learning shows promise in nursing education, warranting investigation for death education. DESIGN: Parallel randomized controlled trial with pretest-posttest control group. METHODS: The intervention group completed the "Te…

Deafness and Specific Learning Disorder: towards a possible comorbidity.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Most children and adolescents with deafness receive one or two cochlear implants (CIs). Despite the CI expanding the potential for auditory rehabilitation in deaf children, the improvements in language and literacy skills of some of these children do not align with the expected outcomes. As the main research question, we wondered if the reading and writing deficits reported in some deaf children with CIs may be characterized as a domain-specific learning disorder, rather than only a consequence of deafness. Thus, we analyzed the academic discrepancies, in both reading and w…

Looking Sideways: Locating Epidemics and Erasures in South Asia.

While focused on the United States, Rosenberg's work on epidemics offers a nuanced framing that defines the stages and unfolding trajectories of epidemics. His writing is a good starting point to analyze the scope and challenges of epidemic historiography in South Asia. To redress its gaps, I have suggested an approach focused on writing histories of epidemics "sideways" and examined plague and influenza epidemics to situate the fluid politics of lived risks and marginality, moving away from dominant interpretations that have tried to characterize epidemics as finite and episodic.

[Alexia without agraphia in the Arabic language. Neurolinguistic and and MRI study].

A 33 year-old woman developed an alexia without agraphia, a color anomia, a right hemianopia, an aphasic amnesia and a verbal amnesia. The brain MRI showed the lesions in the left splenium of corpus callosum, forceps major, optic radiations and anterieur temporal lobe. The fact that she measured writing comprehension and had complete recovery of reading impairment despite the persistence of anatomic lesions plead in favour of an active participation of the right hemisphere (RH) on reading; this capacity of the RH may be due to the linguistic particularities of arabic writing.

Impairment in processing meaningless verbal material in several modalities: the relationship between short-term memory and phonological skills.

Phonological processing abilities were studied in a patient who, following focal brain damage, showed selective impairment in non-word reading, writing, and repetition and also a severe short-term memory (STM) deficit specific for auditorily presented verbal material. The patient could execute tasks involving phonemic manipulation and awareness perfectly. Our data, in contrast with earlier observations in a case of developmental phonological dyslexia, show that acquired impairment in non-word reading, writing, repetition, and immediate memory may occur despite good phonological processing abil…

Occupational Protection in Interventional Radiology. A Joint Guideline of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

PURPOSE: Since the initial edition of this Guideline was published in 2010, it has become increasingly clear that occupational protection involves more than just radiation protection. Additionally, radiation exposure to operators and staff occurs from sources other than fluoroscopy. This Guideline has been updated to incorporate these topics and to reflect new information on occupational protection in interventional radiology. METHODS: The CIRSE Standards of Practice Committee, in conjunction with SIR, established a writing panel of twelve clinicians, medical physics experts, and others with …

Rumination and self-reflection in stress narratives and relations to psychological functioning.

The longitudinal study aims to expand what is known about the costs and benefits of narrating stressful experiences by exploring changes in rumination within the narrative process and comparing it to changes in self-reflection. Rumination (e.g., brooding, self-criticism, and negative emotions) and self-reflection were measured in stress narratives of 56 college students. There were several goals: (1) examine changes in narrative rumination and narrative self-reflection over 3 days of writing, (2) examine the relations among the changes in narrative rumination variables and narrative self-refle…

Apraxic agraphia following thalamic damage: Three new cases.

Apraxic agraphia (AA) is a so-called peripheral writing disorder following disruption of the skilled movement plans of writing while the central processes that subserve spelling are intact. It has been observed in a variety of etiologically heterogeneous neurological disorders typically associated with lesions located in the language dominant parietal and frontal region. The condition is characterized by a hesitant, incomplete, imprecise or even illegible graphomotor output. Letter formation cannot be attributed to sensorimotor, extrapyramidal or cerebellar dysfunction affecting the writing li…

Primary somatosensory cortical plasticity and tactile temporal discrimination in focal hand dystonia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether theta burst stimulation (TBS) applied over primary somatosensory cortex (S1) modulates somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) and writing performances in patients with focal hand dystonia (FHD). METHODS: Twelve patients with FHD underwent STDT testing and writing tasks before and after intermittent, continuous, or sham TBS (iTBS, cTBS, sham TBS) over S1 contralateral to the affected hand. Twelve healthy subjects underwent iTBS and cTBS over S1 and STDT values were tested on the right hand before and after TBS. RESULTS: Baseline STDT values we…

Pure misallocation of "0" in number transcoding: a new symptom of right cerebral dysfunction.

To account for the mechanism of number transcoding, many authors have proposed various models, for example, semantic-abstract model, lexical-semantic model, triple-code model, and so on. However, almost all of them are based on the symptoms of patients with left cerebral damage. Previously, I reported two Japanese patients with right posterior cerebral infarction showing pure misallocation of "0" (omission: "40,265"-->"4,265," addition: "107"-->"1,007," transposition: "4,072"-->"4,702") both in writing and oral reading of Arabic numerals. To examine whether the pure misallocation of "0" is com…
