Knowledge, perceptions and practices regarding schistosomiasis among women living in a highly endemic rural district in Zimbabwe: implications on infections among preschool-aged children.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis primarily affects poor and neglected communities due to their lack of safe water and sanitation facilities. In an effort to improve intervention strategies, the present study investigated the association of socio-demographic characteristics of women with their existing knowledge, perceptions and practices (KPP) in five urogenital schistosomiasis endemic rural communities in Zimbabwe. METHODS: In February 2016, a cross sectional study was conducted in which 426 women in rural Madziwa area, Shamva District were interviewed using a pretested structured questionnaire s…

Factors associated with active syphilis among men and women aged 15 years and older in the Zimbabwe Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (2015-2016).

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative STIs, including syphilis, increase the risk for HIV acquisition and transmission due to the presence of ulcers/chancres that serve as a point-of-entry and exit for HIV. In Zimbabwe, diagnosis of syphilis often occurs in pregnant women who seek ANC services where syphilis testing is offered, and among men and women who seek health care for STIs. Zimbabwe's national syphilis estimates are based on these diagnosed cases, with little information available about the prevalence of untreated syphilis among the general population. This analysis uses data from ZIMPHIA (2015-201…

Circulating plasma microRNA expression profiles associated with virological failure and HIV drug resistance among adults receiving second-line protease inhibitor-based antiretroviral therapy in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Virological failure (VF) and HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) remain major challenges to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Plasma viral load (VL) cannot distinguish adherence-related failure from HIVDR, while genotypic resistance testing (GRT) is limited by cost. Circulating plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) may provide complementary host-response markers for monitoring HIV treatment outcomes. We evaluated the expression and discriminatory performance of three miRNAs (hsa-miR-146a-5p, hsa-miR-150-5p, hsa-miR-29a-3p) among adults on protease inhibitor-based second-line ART in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We …

Cervical Cancer Screening Coverage Increased in Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe: Findings From Sequential Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment Surveys 2015-2017 and 2020-2023.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer causes significant morbidity and mortality in low- and middle-income countries, yet it is a preventable disease. Population-based HIV impact assessments (PHIAs) provide data to evaluate national progress toward HIV epidemic control; some countries included questions about cervical cancer screening and treatment history in their PHIAs. By analyzing sequential results from PHIA surveys in Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe from 2015 to 2017 and 2020 to 2023, we assessed progress toward the World Health Organization global cervical cancer elimination targets that c…

Factors associated with women's preference for an over-encapsulated Dual Prevention Pill: Findings from two clinical crossover trials among women in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: A dual prevention pill (DPP) for co-delivery of pregnancy and HIV prevention is currently in development and will offer an alternative to taking two separate products. We examined behavioral, partnership/interpersonal, social, and structural correlates of preferences for an over-encapsulated DPP (as a proxy for the product in development, consisting of oral contraceptive pill and oral PrEP pill) among women and adolescent girls in South Africa and Zimbabwe to inform DPP introduction and counseling strategies. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from two clinical crossover s…

Intimate partner violence, behaviours associated with risk of HIV acquisition and condom use in married women in Manicaland, East Zimbabwe: An HIV prevention cascade analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is widespread in the WHO African region with generalised HIV epidemics and may contribute to ongoing HIV transmission through its associations with behaviours associated with HIV acquisition risk and low use of prevention methods particularly in marital relationships. METHODS: We conducted a male condom HIV prevention cascade analysis using data from a general-population survey in Manicaland, Zimbabwe (July 2018-December 2019) to develop an understanding of how interventions that reduce IPV might be built upon to also reduce HIV incidence. Multivari…

Antenatal and delivery practices and neonatal mortality amongst women with institutional and non-institutional deliveries in rural Zimbabwe: observational data from a cluster randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite achieving relatively high rates of antenatal care, institutional delivery, and HIV antiretroviral therapy for women during pregnancy, neonatal mortality has remained stubbornly high in Zimbabwe. Clearer understanding of causal pathways is required to inform effective interventions. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of data from the Sanitation Hygiene Infant Nutrition Efficacy (SHINE) trial, a cluster-randomized community-based trial among pregnant women and their infants, to examine care during institutional and non-institutional deliveries in rural Zimbabwe and…

Decreasing Adult Prevalence of Advanced HIV Disease From 2 Population-Based HIV Impact Assessments in Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, 2015-2023.

BACKGROUND: Limited population data exist assessing trends in advanced HIV disease (AHD) in the test-and-treat era. We examined changes in AHD prevalence from 2015 to 2017 (round 1) and 2019 to 2023 (round 2) in 7 African countries. METHODS: We pooled data from 2 rounds of the Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment (PHIA) surveys from 7 countries among persons with HIV (PWH) aged 15 to 59 years. AHD was defined as having an HIV-positive result and CD4 <200 cells/mm3. Awareness of HIV diagnosis and treatment status were based on self-report and detection of antiretrovirals. Prevalence and trends of hepatitis B and C virus biomarkers in Zimbabwe: comparative analyses of a nation's blood-donor surveillance data and meta-analyses of population studies.

BACKGROUND: The disproportionate burden of viral hepatitis, particularly hepatitis B virus (HBV) is experienced by people living in low-resourced sub-Saharan Africa, where the estimated prevalence is 3-7 times the global average. Therefore to inform policy, we describe the seroprevalence and trends of hepatitis C (HCV) and HBV biomarkers: anti-HCV antibody and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), respectively, in Zimbabwe. METHODS: We analysed data from 181,248 consecutive blood-donors, examined between January 2015 through December 2018. Additionally, we conducted a comprehensive literature …
