PURPOSE OF REVIEW: A significant advance in our understanding of the reverse cholesterol transport pathway occurred in 1999 with the identification of defects in the ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 gene as the cause of Tangier disease. Since this discovery, an overwhelming number of experiments have been conducted to further define the function of this gene. Among the concepts emerging from such studies is a possible role for the gene in cholesterol absorption. The present study describes the cholesterol absorption by hyperlipidemia atherosclerosis prone (LAP) Japanese quail to address their high susceptibility to experimental atherosclerosis. The apparent cholesterol absorption rate of LAP quail was compared with that of commercially available (CA) Japanese quail. The intestinal absorption of calcium and seric levels of calcifediol and calcitriol were studied in 27 patients with essential blood hypertension (BH) and 20 normal patients in a control group. Kneaded mixtures of a basic drug, meclizine dihydrochloride (MZ), and a neutral drug, prednisolone (PN), with low molecular gelatin at the weight ratio of 1:1 were prepared, and their in vitro dissolution and in vivo absorption behaviour were examined. Serum concentrations of gamma benzene hexachloride were determined in 9 children following application of 1% GBH shampoo for treatment of pediculosis capitis. GBH was present in the blood of all patients 2-24 hours following application. Four patients, who were retreated because of the persistence of living lice, had GBH in their pretreatment blood specimens. GBH levels in these latter patients were larger after retreatment than after the initial application, indicating that there may have been accumulation of the drug.

Calcium absorption was measured by 47Ca disappearance from ligated duodenal loops and 47Ca uptake by tibiae in chicks fed diets containing one of four levels of Mg for two weeks.
