Orbital apex fractures are a debilitating condition that can cause vision problems and are often associated with intracranial injury. Traumatic Optic Neuropathy (TON), which results in vision loss following a traumatic injury to the optic nerve, can be caused by various mechanisms, but most cases involve injuries to the globe, orbit, or adnexa. We are reporting a case of an 18 year old male with a history of an air gun being accidentally discharged into his left eye. He was evaluated and found to have an Orbital apex fracture with left eye TON. Patient was administered high dose steroids. Deta

A 6 year old girl accidentally discovered a gun in her home and shot herself in her mouth. A bullet lodged in her right frontal lobe, but she remained neurologically intact with minimal symptoms. Her diagnosis was delayed due to the family leaving the emergency room for long wait times and later noticed over 72 hours from the injury at a dentist appointment. She was sent back to the emergency department, where head imaging revealed the injury to be inoperable. Six months later, the patient developed focal impaired awareness seizures. This was treated with oxcarbazepine, and patient responded w

Burns are a common injury in both abused and non-abused children, and the accurate diagnosis of abusive burns is important to ensure protection. In the particular case of a three year old child with a second degree burn on her face and neck caused by an alleged contact with a hot iron, the correct analysis of the injury and the dynamics of what was reported as a domestic accident allowed the recognition of a different scenario and a diagnosis of child abuse due to the pressure of the flat part of the iron on the skin, thus uniformly involving the cheek and the upper part of the neck. Inferior dislocation of the shoulder, also called luxatio erecta, is a rare form of the otherwise common shoulder dislocation. It appears in less than 0.5% of all shoulder dislocations. An awareness of associated potential axillary artery injury, brachial plexus complications, and rotator cuff tears is important in this rare entity and should be excluded with a high index of suspicion. In our case report, we have an 83-year-old female who inferiorly dislocated her dominant shoulder with brachial plexus injury and musculotendinous injury, which was caused by an accidental fall. The dislocation

Trauma is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Due to a variety of factors, many pediatric trauma patients are initially evaluated and stabilized at adult hospitals that lack pediatric specific emergency medicine and surgical expertise. While similar to adult patients, the initial evaluation and resuscitation of pediatric patients does differ. Many of these key differences contribute to missed injury and susceptibility to error in the treatment of children. Here, we highlight a variety of differences between pediatric and adult trauma patients and clarify r

Radioprotectors are compounds that protect against radiation injury when given prior to radiation exposure. Mitigators can protect against radiation injury when given after exposure but before symptoms appear. Radioprotectors and mitigators can potentially improve the outcomes of radiotherapy for cancer treatment by allowing higher doses of radiation and/or reduced damage to normal tissues. Such compounds can also potentially counteract the effects of accidental exposure to radiation or deliberate exposure (e.g., nuclear reactor meltdown, dirty bomb, or nuclear bomb explosion); hence they are

Neurologic trauma is one of the most common and challenging problems encountered in the pediatric emergency setting. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential to minimize morbidity and mortality. The primary goal of the neuroimager in the acute setting is to provide rapid diagnosis, to monitor the development of complications, and to aid in the determination of prognosis. Unique features of the immature brain and skull influence the patterns and types of injuries observed. It is incumbent on the radiologist to understand these features as an aid to diagnosis. Further, the radiologist must be a

Forty-one patients with caustic ingestion were reviewed. Eighty-three percent were children, all of whom suffered accidental injury. Liquid drain cleaner was the agent in 57 percent and was responsible for all esophageal burns. Symptoms and physical findings were unreliable in predicting the extent of injury. Endoscopy was performed in most patients within 36 hours of ingestion and accurately estimated the risk of subsequent esophageal stricture formation. Steroid administration had no influence on the development of strictures. Esophageal strictures developed in 22 percent of the patients. On

BACKGROUND: Arginine vasopressin has been used for the management of refractory vasodilatory shock. However, it is still unclear whether arginine vasopressin is useful for hypotension in patients with spinal cord injury.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 78-year-old man with autonomic dysreflexia and paralysis below the level corresponding to Th2 due to spinal cord injury previously underwent cholecystectomy. During the surgery, accidental hemorrhage led him to refractory hemorrhagic shock unresponsive to fluid resuscitation and catecholamine. Lasting hypotension was improved with arginine vasopressin.

Injury is the most common cause of preventable morbidity and death among children under five. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of injury-related mortality rates in children under five and to provide evidence for future preventive strategies. Data were obtained from the Under Five Child Mortality Surveillance System in Hunan Province, China, 2015-2020. Injury-related mortality rates with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by year, residence, gender, age, and major injury subtype (drowning, suffocation, traffic injuries, falls, and poisoning). And crude

It is well known that rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon can be associated with open injuries and that closed rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon is rare. Tendon injuries of the foot can occur secondary to direct, indirect, or repetitive injury. Repetitive tendon injuries can cause tendinitis or stenosing tenosynovitis. Tendinitis is associated with internal tendon injury that can present with tendon thickening, mucinoid degeneration, nodule development, or in situ partial tears. Stenosing tenosynovitis is the development of tendon adhesions within the tendon sheath that int

Tracheobronchial injuries (TBI) are a heterogenous group of sometimes life-threatening traumas with different management approaches. Symptoms are mediastinal and subcutaneous emphysema, bloody secretions from the airway or haemoptysis in alert patients, and high air leakage along the cuff or increased ventilatory resistance may be signs for TBI in intubated patients. The necessity of immediate clinical evaluation, CT-scan and bronchoscopic evaluation are essential for prompt diagnosis and classification as well as experienced air way management and treatment, these patients are best managed fr
