The synthesis of some N-(o-hydroxyphenyl)benzamides and benzacetamides (2a-2p) in order to determine their in vitro antimicrobial activity against two Gram-positive bacteria, three Gram-negative bacteria and the fungus Candida albicans is described. The new compounds were compared with several control drugs. S-20098 is a potent nonindolic melatonin agonist that has been shown to entrain free-running circadian rhythms. The current experiments examined the role of the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) and of the pineal gland in the entrainment of circadian rhythms by S-20098. We investigated the therapeutic effects of milacemide in seven patients with myoclonus and three patients with the stiff-person syndrome in an open-label trial. Milacemide was initiated at 800 mg/day and was gradually increased to a maximum dosage of 2,400 mg/day. No significant improvement occurred in the 10 patients.

We have studied effects of single doses of 2-allyl-2-isopropylacetamide and ferric citrate on hepatic haem turnover in rats. Haem was pre-labelled by intraperitoneal administration of 5-amino-[4-(14)C]laevulinate 4h before other treatments. Computer-assisted analysis of the haem decay curve showed that at least two exponential components were involved implying two haem pools. BACKGROUND: Malignant mesothelioma (MM) is a rare and highly aggressive cancer. Despite advances in multidisciplinary treatments for cancer, the prognosis for MM remains poor with no effective diagnostic biomarkers currently available. The aim of this study was to identify plasma metabolic biomarkers for better MM diagnosis and prognosis by use of a MM cell line-derived xenograft (CDX) model.

A series of novel 1,4-naphthoquinone-triazole hybrids, N-(3-amino-1,4-dioxo-1,4-dihydronaphthalen-2-yl)-2-(4-R-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)acetamide, was synthesized by click chemistry in the presence of sodium ascorbate and copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate in 81-94% yield. Various biological properties of the synthesized compounds including DNA binding/cleavage, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties were evaluated. The DNA binding study was performed using dsDNA and G-quadruplex DNA. All of the compounds showed fluorescence increase in the presence of DNA, regardless of the structure.

RATIONALE: In the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA), actions of neurosteroids, such as the progesterone metabolite, 5α-pregnan-3α-ol-20-one (3α,5α-THP), can facilitate mating and influence stress-related processes. Some actions of 3α,5α-THP may occur via positive modulation of GABA(A) receptors (GBRs), or negative modulation of N-methyl-D: -aspartate receptors (NMDARs), to influence anxiety-like behavior; but this is not known.
