Tinnitus and treatment-resistant depression.

Tinnitus, a frequent disorder, is the conscious perception of a sound in the absence of a corresponding external acoustic sound source in the sense of a phantom sound. Although the majority of people who perceive a tinnitus sound can cope with it and are only minimaly impaired in their quality of lfe, 2-3% of the population perceive tinnitus as a major problem. Recently it has been proposed that the two groups should be differentiated by distict terms: "Tinnitus" describes the auditory or sensory component, whereas "Tinnitus Disorder" reflects the auditory component and the associated sufferin

Auditory stimulation and deep learning predict awakening from coma after cardiac arrest.

Assessing the integrity of neural functions in coma after cardiac arrest remains an open challenge. Prognostication of coma outcome relies mainly on visual expert scoring of physiological signals, which is prone to subjectivity and leaves a considerable number of patients in a 'grey zone', with uncertain prognosis. Quantitative analysis of EEG responses to auditory stimuli can provide a window into neural functions in coma and information about patients' chances of awakening. However, responses to standardized auditory stimulation are far from being used in a clinical routine due to heterogene

The Interaural Time Difference for High-Pass Filtered Noise and Its Relationship With Brainstem Dysfunction and Disability in Multiple Sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Just noticeable difference for interaural time difference (JND-ITD) is a sensitive test to detect silent lesions and neural asynchrony along the auditory pathways among individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), but it has not been studied with brainstem functional system scores (BFSS) and expanded disability status scale (EDSS). The study aims to assess the usefulness of JND-ITD thresholds in individuals with MS and relate to brainstem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) lesions, BFSS, and disability (EDSS). METHOD: Standard group comparison design was adapted to compare the JND-ITD thr

The Effect of Auditory Stimulation on the Nonlinear Dynamics of Heart Rate: The Impact of Emotional Valence and Arousal.

BACKGROUND: Although it is known that sound exposure evokes changes in autonomic activity, the effects of noise and music on the nonlinear behavior of heart rate fluctuations remain poorly understood and controversial. This study aims to assess the influence of sound subjective emotional valence and arousal on the nonlinear characteristics of the autonomic nervous system during passive listening. METHODS: In this study, 42 subjects listened to four sounds: (1) white noise, (2) road traffic noise, (3) excitatory music, and (4) a lullaby. The experiment consisted of two consecutive sessions: 5

[Tinnitus].

Tinnitus is a highly prevalent symptom and a common reason for seeing an otolaryngologist. Since tinnitus can go hand in hand with hearing loss, the step-by-step clarification of hearing loss is one of the essential ENT examinations for tinnitus sufferers. The anamnesis and medical history are relevant, since a multidimensional interaction with the tinnitus can be important for the treatment, especially in the case of a psychological comorbidity. In the vast majority of patients, no causal factor can be found. In the absence of external stimuli, phantom perceptions of tones or noises are held

Down-phase auditory stimulation is not able to counteract pharmacologically or physiologically increased sleep depth in traumatic brain injury rats.

Modulation of slow-wave activity, either via pharmacological sleep induction by administering sodium oxybate or sleep restriction followed by a strong dissipation of sleep pressure, has been associated with preserved posttraumatic cognition and reduced diffuse axonal injury in traumatic brain injury rats. Although these classical strategies provided promising preclinical results, they lacked the specificity and/or translatability needed to move forward into clinical applications. Therefore, we recently developed and implemented a rodent auditory stimulation method that is a scalable, less inva

Liraglutide chronic treatment prevents development of tolerance to antiseizure effects of diazepam in genetically epilepsy prone rats.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone that can regulate several neuronal functions. The modulation of GLP-1 receptors emerged as a potential target to treat several neurological diseases, such as epilepsy. Here, we studied the effects of acute and chronic treatment with liraglutide (LIRA), in genetically epilepsy prone rats (GEPR-9s). We have also investigated the possible development of tolerance to antiseizure effects of diazepam, and how LIRA could affect this phenomenon over the same period of treatment. The present data indicate that an acute treatment with LIRA did not diminish th

A Review of the Neurobiological Mechanisms that Distinguish Between Loudness Recruitment and Hyperacusis.

Loudness recruitment is a common symptom of hearing loss induced by cochlear lesions, which is defined as an abnormally fast growth of loudness perception of sound intensity. This is different from hyperacusis, which is defined as "abnormal intolerance to regular noises" or "extreme amplification of sounds that are comfortable to the average individual". Although both are characterized by abnormally high sound amplification, the mechanisms of occurrence are distinct. Damage to the outer hair cells alters the nonlinear characteristics of the basilar membrane, resulting in aberrant auditory nerv

The Spectral Extent of Phasic Suppression of Loudness and Distortion-Product Otoacoustic Emissions by Infrasound and Low-Frequency Tones.

We investigated the effect of a biasing tone close to 5, 15, or 30 Hz on the response to higher-frequency probe tones, behaviorally, and by measuring distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). The amplitude of the biasing tone was adjusted for criterion suppression of cubic DPOAE elicited by probe tones presented between 0.7 and 8 kHz, or criterion loudness suppression of a train of tone-pip probes in the range 0.125-8 kHz. For DPOAEs, the biasing-tone level for criterion suppression increased with probe-tone frequency by 8-9 dB/octave, consistent with an apex-to-base gradient of biasi

Firing Rate Adaptation of the Human Auditory Nerve Optimizes Neural Signal-to-Noise Ratios.

Several physiological mechanisms act on the response of the auditory nerve (AN) during acoustic stimulation, resulting in an adjustment in auditory gain. These mechanisms include-but are not limited to-firing rate adaptation, dynamic range adaptation, the middle ear muscle reflex, and the medial olivocochlear reflex. A potential role of these mechanisms is to improve the neural signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the output of the AN in real time. This study tested the hypothesis that neural SNRs, inferred from non-invasive assessment of the human AN, improve over the duration of acoustic stimulati…

How groove in music affects gait.

Rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS) is a gait intervention in which gait-disordered patients synchronise footsteps to music or metronome cues. Musical 'groove', the tendency of music to induce movement, has previously been shown to be associated with faster gait, however, why groove affects gait remains unclear. One mechanism by which groove may affect gait is that of beat salience: music that is higher in groove has more salient musical beats, and higher beat salience might reduce the cognitive demands of perceiving the beat and synchronizing footsteps to it. If groove's effects on gait are d

Impaired Perception and Neural Processing of Rules in Developmental Dyslexia.

Rules and regularities of language are typically processed in an implicit and effortless way in the human brain. Individuals with developmental dyslexia have problems in implicit learning of regularities in sequential stimuli, but the neural basis of this deficit has not been studied. This study investigated extraction and utilization of a complex auditory rule at neural and perceptual levels in 18 adults with dyslexia and 20 typical readers. Mismatch negativity (MMN) and P3a responses to rule violations in speech stimuli, reflecting change detection and attention switch, respectively, were re

Sounds of sickness: can people identify infectious disease using sounds of coughs and sneezes?

Cough, cough. Is that person sick, or do they just have a throat tickle? A growing body of research suggests pathogen threats shape key aspects of human sociality. However, less research has investigated specific processes involved in pathogen threat detection. Here, we examine whether perceivers can accurately detect pathogen threats using an understudied sensory modality-sound. Participants in four studies judged whether cough and sneeze sounds were produced by people infected with a communicable disease or not. We found no evidence that participants could accurately identify the origins of

Big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) successfully navigate through clutter after exposure to intense band-limited sound.

Echolocating big brown bats fly, orient, forage, and roost in cluttered acoustic environments in which aggregate sound pressure levels can be as intense as 100 to 140 dB SPL, levels that would impair auditory perception in other terrestrial mammals. We showed previously that bats exposed to intense wide-band sound (116 dB SPL) can navigate successfully through dense acoustic clutter. Here, we extend these results by quantifying performance of bats navigating through a cluttered scene after exposure to intense band-limited sounds (bandwidths 5-25 kHz, 123 dB SPL). Behavioral performance was not

Relative contribution of envelope and fine structure to the subcortical encoding of noise-degraded speech.

Brainstem frequency-following responses (FFR) were elicited to the speech token /ama/ in noise containing only envelope (ENV) or fine structure (TFS) cues to assess the relative contribution of these temporal features to the neural encoding of degraded speech. Successive cue removal weakened FFRs with noise having the most deleterious effect on TFS coding. Neuro-acoustic and response-to-response correlations revealed speech-FFRs are dominated by stimulus ENV for clean speech, with TFS making a stronger contribution in moderate noise levels. Results suggest that the relative weighting of tempor
