Acoustic emission mechanisms of bubble detachment and pinch-off.

The evolution of bubbles released from a submerged nozzle involves coupled hydrodynamic and acoustic effects throughout growth, detachment, and ascent. This study investigates the acoustic emission mechanisms of millimeter-scale bubbles using high-speed imaging and hydrophone measurements over a range of gas flow rates. A spherical-cap-cone correction is introduced into the classical force-balance model to characterize the non-spherical morphology of bubbles detaching from large orifices at low flow rates, improving detachment-diameter prediction. With increasing gas flow rate, the classical M

Articulatory strategy as a source of variation in acoustic vowel dynamics.

Acoustic vowel dynamics have some speaker-identifying characteristics, which have been ascribed to individual properties of articulatory strategies: formant transitions have a particular shape because speakers move their articulators, using specific and practised movements. However, there is little existing evidence that different articulatory strategies systematically affect formant dynamics. The present study corroborates the link between the two. Ultrasound tongue imaging data from 36 speakers of Northern-Anglo English are used to identify distinct articulatory strategies for the production

Toolkit for acoustic-phonetic analysis of naturalistic speech data.

A major limitation in the speech sciences is access to naturalistic data in experimental settings and the difficulty of translating laboratory designs to real-world contexts. Researchers studying speech production or perception often rely on in-lab recordings, which constrain the sociolinguistic contexts examined and limit ecological validity. The Toolkit for Acoustic-Phonetic Analysis (TAPA) is an open-source pipeline that automates the acquisition, transcription, speaker diarization, forced alignment, and per-segment acoustic analysis of naturalistic, single/multi-speaker audio. The current

Cavitation erosion from single acoustically driven bubbles.

Acoustic cavitation is achieved by exciting mechanical vibrations at ultrasonic frequencies, which in turn cause the formation of bubble clouds, followed by flows and emulsification. Typically, the effects of acoustic cavitation clouds on cleaning and erosion are difficult to predict or model due to the complex interactions among numerous bubbles. Systematic studies of acoustic cavitation bubbles are simplified by using single cavitation bubbles as a means of controlled cavitation, owing to their precisely defined timing and properties, which can be induced within an acoustic field by seeding

Magnetic skyrmion arrangement tuning by surface acoustic waves.

Skyrmions, as nonlinear topological solitons, have garnered significant attention due to their unique physical properties and promising potential for applications. However, achieving controlled manipulation of skyrmion arrays remains a formidable challenge. Here, we introduce a SAW-mediated strategy to engineer well-ordered skyrmion configurations within ferromagnetic [Co/Pd]n multilayer nano-islands. We exploit radially propagating SAWs generated by fan-shaped interdigital transducers to achieve controlled spatial ordering of skyrmions. The ordering arises from SAW-induced anisotropic strain

Acoustic and Multimodal Deterrents to Limit Invasive Fish Passage.

Acoustic deterrents have been deployed with variable success to decrease fish interactions with anthropogenic hazards (i.e., power plant intakes and spillways) and prevent the spread of invasive species. Acoustic deterrents are nonphysical barriers that offer many advantages in that sound can travel a great distance, are relatively independent of light and weather conditions, do not interfere with navigation and are relatively inexpensive to implement. Assessing the efficacy of deterrents is challenging as there are few controlled or long-term studies and many reports fail to specify sound par

Biodegradable Smart Face Mask for Cough Acoustic Sensing.

We introduce Green Cough Sense, a biodegradable, battery-free smart face mask that incorporates a flexible, passive microphone for sensing cough acoustics in pulmonology. The device integrates a mesoscale-patterned 3 by 3 array of 1 cm2 circular drum-like membranes with a patch antenna, a planar resonator comprising a metallic radiating patch over a grounded dielectric substrate. Cough-induced acoustic vibrations are transduced into measurable shifts in the electromagnetic reflection coefficient (|S11|), which are measured by a vector network analyzer operating in zero-span mode for high-fidel…

Gram differentiation of bacteria by acoustic-enhanced flow cytometry.

Introduction. Recently, flow cytometry has gained the attention of clinical microbiologists for its ability to characterize bacterial species. This article shows how acoustic-enhanced flow cytometry, combined with the fluorescent dye SYTO 9, can differentiate between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.Gap Statement. SYTO 9 is a cell membrane-permeable dye with a high affinity for nucleic acids in both living and non-living prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and has been used as a counterstain to discriminate between live and dead cells in combination with other dyes. However, the consisten

Acoustic Correlates of Timing Typicality in Speakers With Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: The present study aimed to determine acoustic metrics that can approximate listener perception of the typicality of speech timing in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). It was hypothesized that the perception of timing typicality would correlate with measures based on the deviation from speech produced by individuals with typical speech (in speaking duration, in pause time and other disfluencies, and at the word level). METHOD: Twenty speakers with PD and 40 typical speakers matched in age and sex were recorded reading a standard passage. Acoustic timing measures were calculat

Malleability of the Lexical Bias Effect for Acoustically Degraded Speech.

OBJECTIVES: Lexical bias is a phenomenon wherein impoverished speech signals tend to be perceived in line with the word context in which they are heard. Previous research demonstrated that lexical bias may guide processing when the acoustic signal is degraded, as in the case of cochlear implant (CI) users. The goal of the present study was twofold: (1) replicate previous lab-based work demonstrating a lexical bias for acoustically degraded speech using online research methods, and (2) characterize the malleability of the lexical bias effect following a period of auditory training. We hypothesi

Frequency Importance Functions in Simulated Electric Acoustic Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: In electric acoustic stimulation (EAS)-the combined use of a cochlear implant (CI) and a hearing aid (HA) within the same ear-effective speech perception depends on the integration of low-frequency acoustic input and high-frequency electric input. This spectral integration can be influenced by spatial overlap between the most apical CI electrode contact and functional acoustic hearing regions. Despite its prevalence, the impact of spatial overlap on spectral integration and speech perception remains unclear. This study derived frequency importance functions (FIFs) for simulated EAS

Challenges and Limits in Explaining and Acoustic Modeling of Voice Characteristics.

To this day, the assessment of human voices remains a challenge due to (i) inconsistencies in subjective ratings and (ii) the lack of objective measurements for the perceptual impressions of voice characteristics. This can lead to significant consequences in applied fields such as speech therapy, where the assessment of voices is crucial for a successful treatment. In this paper, we address the explanation of voice and its characteristics from two different angles: In a first study, 22 speech therapists in training assessed a set of 20 non-pathological voices regarding 20 voice characteristics

Probiotic acoustic biosensors for noninvasive imaging of gut inflammation.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) affect millions of people globally, result in severe symptoms, and are difficult to diagnose and monitor - often necessitating the use of invasive and costly methods such as colonoscopies or endoscopies. Engineered gut bacteria offer a promising alternative due to their ability to persist in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and sense and respond to specific environmental signals. However, probiotics that have previously been engineered to report on inflammatory and other disease biomarkers in the Gl tract rely on fluorescent or bioluminescent reporters, whose s

Mechanical response and acoustic emission characteristics of damaged mudstone.

Mudstone, which is a representative weak rock mass, often experiences mechanical deterioration because of repeated stress disturbances in underground engineering. This study elucidates the mechanical and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of damaged mudstone. Cylindrical mudstone samples with damage levels corresponding to 0%, 20%, 40%, and 60% uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) were prepared and tested under uniaxial compression with real-time AE monitoring. The results reveal that the peak strength decreased with increasing damage level, whereas the elastic modulus decreased from 4.861

Automated Acoustic Analysis in Parkinson's Disease Using a Smartphone.

Dysarthria is a common speech disorder in Parkinson's Disease (PD). The Dysarthria Analyzer software has emerged as a viable tool for automatic speech analysis in PD and quantification of dysarthria severity. However, most studies use the Dysarthria Analyzer with recordings obtained under tightly controlled conditions and high-quality microphones, and the utility of the Dysarthria Analyzer when used with recordings acquired under non-ideal conditions, such as in busy clinical settings, remains unexplored. This study investigates the Dysarthria Analyzer's performance in a setting more akin to a

Acoustical and behavioral heuristics for fast interactive sound design.

During their creative process, designers routinely seek the feedback of end users. Yet, the collection of perceptual judgments is costly and time-consuming, since it involves repeated exposure to the designed object under elementary variations. Thus, considering the practical limits of working with human subjects, randomized protocols in interactive sound design face the risk of inefficiency, in the sense of collecting mostly uninformative judgments. This risk is all the more severe that the initial search space of design variations is vast. In this paper, we propose heuristics for reducing th
