Performance of recombinant chimeric proteins in the serological diagnosis of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Dogs are considered sentinels in areas of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission risk to humans. ELISA is generally the method of choice … ble entry tables. Cross-reactivity was also evaluated for babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, dirofilariosis, anaplasmosis, and visceral leishmaniasis. Best performance was shown by IBMP-8.3 and IBMP-8.4, although all four antigens demonstrated a high diagnostic performance with 46 positive and 149 negative samples tested. IBMP-8.3 demonstrated 100% sensitivity, followe …

Zoonotic Babesia: A scoping review of the global evidence.

BACKGROUND: Babesiosis is a parasitic vector-borne disease of increasing public health importance. Since the first human case was reported in 1957, zoonotic species have been reported on nearly every continent. Zoonotic Babesia is vectored by Ixodes ticks and is commonly transmitted in North America by Ixodes scapularis, the tick species responsible for transmitting the pathogens that also cause Lyme disease, Powassan virus, and anaplasmosis in humans. Predicted climate change is expected to impact the spread of vectors, which is likely to affect the distribution of vector-borne diseases inclu…

Prevalence of seropositivity to spotted fever group rickettsiae and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in a large, demographically diverse US sample.

BACKGROUND: Most epidemiologic studies of tick-borne rickettsial diseases in the United States are small and have limited demographic scope, making broader risk assessment difficult. METHODS: We conducted a seroprevalence study of spotted fever group rickettsiae and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, the agent of human granulocytic anaplasmosis. Specimens were selected randomly from the Department of Defense Serum Repository for 10,000 diverse military personnel at various stages in their careers who were serving with active duty status in 1997. Antibody testing included enzyme-linked immunosorbent a…

Evaluation of platelet surface-associated immunoglobulin positivity and its association with hematologic findings and vector-borne pathogens in thrombocytopenic dogs.

BACKGROUND: Platelet surface-associated immunoglobulin (PSAIG) occurs in thrombocytopenic dogs with vector-borne diseases and immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and may be associated with thrombocytopenia severity and inflammatory markers, including neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR, PLR). HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Assess associations between PSAIG positivity, hematologic parameters, thrombocytopenia severity, and vector-borne status in thrombocytopenic dogs. ANIMALS: Sixty-nine client-owned thrombocytopenic dogs (<200 × 103/μL) were enrolled between June 2022 and June

Prevalence and molecular characterization of tick-borne cattle haemoparasites in Tripura, India.

Tick-borne haemoparasities (TBHs) cause substantial economic loss to the livestock population due to reduced productivity and working efficiency of the animals along with high mortality rate in untreated cases. A total of 240 blood samples were collected from native (N = 95) and crossbred cattle (N = 145) over 12 months. Microscopical examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood smears and PCR revealed that 27.08% of the animals were infected with at least one TBH. Theileria spp. was the most prevalent (18.75%), followed by Anaplasma spp. (11.25%), mixed infection (6.66%) and Babesia spp. (3.75%).

First serological evidence of infections with selected vector-borne pathogens in dogs in Kosovo.

Canine vector-borne pathogens are a group of widespread microorganisms and nematodes transmitted by arthropods that do not only impact dog health but may also pose a health risk to humans as many of them are zoonotic. As no data exist on the presence of canine vector-borne pathogens in Kosovo, we here present a first study on the seroprevalence of selected vector-borne pathogens, the dog heartworm Dirofilaria immitis and the bacteria Anaplasma spp., Ehrlichia spp. and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The study was carried out from July to October 2019 in all regions of Kosovo and included 149

Seroprevalence of Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina infections and associated risk factors in Machakos County, Kenya.

Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina are important tick-borne pathogens of cattle. A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to determine the seroprevalence of A. marginale and B. bigemina infections and identify associated risk factors on traditional smallholder farms in Machakos County, Kenya. A total of 421 cattle from 127 farms from four divisions in the county were sampled and visited between September and November 2007. The farms were selected by a proportional allocation approach based on the number of farms in the four divisions previously selected by stratified random sampling metho

Serological investigation for West Nile virus, Anaplasma ovis and Leishmania infantum in Greek cattle.

This study investigates the seroprevalence of Greek adult cattle against West Nile virus, Anaplasma ovis and Lehismania infantum. In total, 156 serum samples were examined, drawn from cattle between 2-4 years old. All the examined cattle originated from slaughterhouses of 4 prefectures in Northern Greece (Thessaloniki, Pella, Chalkidiki, Kilkis), in 2 of which (Thessaloniki, Pella) human cases of West Nile virus had been recorded some months before. Thirty out of the 156 (18.6%) samples have tested positive for West Nile virus and fifty-five (35.9%) samples for Anaplasma ovis. All the examined

Molecular survey of bovine vector-borne pathogens in Cebu, Philippines.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) continue to threaten the worldwide livestock industry, but comprehensive epidemiological surveys on such diseases have not been conducted in the Philippines. In the present study, we screened 408 bovine blood samples from 9 areas in Cebu, Philippines, for various VBD pathogens using specific PCR assays. The results revealed prevalences of 54.7, 15.4, 10.0, and 12.0% for Anaplasma spp., Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis, and Trypanosoma (Tr.) theileri, respectively. In contrast, none of the samples were positive for Trypanosoma (Tr.) evansi, Theileria (Th.) orientalis

Application of a reverse line blot assay to the study of haemoparasites in cattle in Uganda.

Recent advances in genomic technology have focused many veterinary researchers on the possibility of producing one multivalent recombinant vaccine against all the haemoparasites that infect cattle in the tropics. Before such a vaccine is developed it is essential to define target cattle populations as well as the range of anti-pathogen vaccines required in order to control disease. To further this objective, we have evaluated a reverse line blot (RLB) assay, which simultaneously detects the principal tick transmitted protozoan and rickettsial cattle pathogens, in different epidemiological scen

Susceptibility of Bos indicus and Bos taurus to Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina infections.

The reaction of Bos taurus and pure-bred Bos indicus heifers to infection with the intraerythrocytic parasites Anaplasma marginale and Babesia bigemina was studied. B. bigemina infection at 18 months and A. marginale infection at 13 or 24 months resulted in slightly less severe reactions in pure-bred Bos indicus cattle than in Bos taurus. In both breeds, the reaction to A. marginale infection was more severe in older cattle. The severity of B. bigemina infection was not affected by a previous infection with A. marginale.

Molecular detection and phylogenetic characterization of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Slovakia.

Wild animals play a crucial role in the maintenance of tick-borne pathogens, acting as reservoir and sentinel hosts within natural ecosystems. The ongoing expansion of tick populations across Europe has intensified the circulation of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Although the epidemiology of this bacterium has been extensively investigated in domestic animals and small wild mammals, the contribution of large omnivores such as the brown bear (Ursus arctos) remains poorly understood, particularly with respect to their exposure to genetically distinct lineage

Prevalence, diagnostic evaluation, and disease associations of vector-borne pathogens in domestic dogs across Namibia: a multi-modal approach.

BACKGROUND: Due to limited documentation on vector-borne pathogens of companion animals in Namibia, a country-wide, multi-site field study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of these pathogens in domestic dogs. METHODS: Samples of whole blood and serum from 375 dogs in 15 towns across eight regions were analysed. Vector-borne pathogens were screened by light microscopic examination of blood smears, point-of-care serology, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Haematology and serum biochemistry analyses were also performed. RESULTS: Collectively, the SNAP® 4Dx® Pl

First molecular confirmation of multiple zoonotic vector-borne diseases in pet dogs and cats of Hong Kong SAR.

In recent years, the incidence of vector-borne diseases (VBDs) has increased throughout the globe. In particular, tick-borne diseases (e.g., caused by Ehrlichia canis, E. ewingii, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, A. platys, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.) and Babesia gibsoni) and mosquito-borne diseases (e.g., caused by Dirofilaria immitis) diseases pose a burden on animal health. Nevertheless, there have been no studies undertaken on the occurrence of VBDs in pet dogs and cats in Hong Kong SAR. This study fills this gap, and is the first to determine the seroprevalence of major VBDs, such

First molecular detection and characterization of tick-borne pathogens in water buffaloes in Bohol, Philippines.

The water buffalo industry is a vital part of the Philippine livestock economy and is an essential contributor to the developing local dairy industry. Although relatively less susceptible to diseases, water buffaloes can still be infected and can act as reservoirs of tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). However, limited information is available regarding the prevalence of tick-borne infections in water buffaloes in the Philippines. This study was conducted to identify TBPs harbored by water buffaloes and to characterize these pathogens molecularly. One hundred water buffalo blood samples collected fro
