Cranial anatomy of the Duchesnean primate Rooneyia viejaensis: new insights from high resolution computed tomography.

Rooneyia viejaensis is a North American Eocene primate of uncertain phylogenetic affinities. Although the external cranial anatomy of Rooneyia is well studied, various authors have suggested that Rooneyia is a stem haplorhine, stem strepsirrhine, stem tarsiiform, or stem anthropoid. Here we describe the internal cranial anatomy of the Rooneyia holotype based on micro-computed tomography and discuss the phylogenetic implications of this anatomy. Precise measurements of the natural endocast filling the braincase of the Rooneyia holotype reveal that the genus had a relative brain size comparable

Changes in coronary anatomy and physiology after heart transplantation.

Cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) is a progressive process involving the epicardial and microvascular coronary systems. The timing of the development of abnormalities in these 2 compartments and the correlation between changes in physiology and anatomy are undefined. The invasive evaluation of coronary artery anatomy and physiology with intravascular ultrasound, fractional flow reserve, coronary flow reserve, and the index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR) was performed in the left anterior descending coronary artery during 151 angiographic evaluations of asymptomatic heart transplant re

Expanded classification system for urethral duplication in the female: A literature review and case report.

INTRODUCTION: Urethral duplication in females is a rare entity with variable presentation and associated abnormalities. Several classification systems have been proposed; however, there exists a need to further delineate female urethral duplication. OBJECTIVE: We sought to propose a new simplified classification system for isolated female urethral duplication based on bladder neck anatomy and meatal configuration, focusing on clinical and surgical outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: A literature review of female urethral duplication up to August 2025 in the PubMed and OVID Databases was performed. We id

Effect of reamer design on posteriorization of the tibial tunnel during endoscopic transtibial anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: It is known that small alterations in tunnel positioning during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction significantly affect ACL length and tensioning patterns as well as alter force vectors and joint kinematics. PURPOSE: To compare the amount of inadvertent posteriorization of the ACL tibial tunnel anatomy during transtibial ACL femoral reaming in the "over-the-top" position with a full femoral reamer versus a half femoral reamer, in comparison to the native tibial ACL footprint. It is hypothesized that the half reamer will result in less distortion of tibial tunnel anato

Complementary Roles of Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography and Catheter Angiography Before Fontan Completion in Patients with Single-Ventricle Physiology: A Single-Center Experience.

Background: In congenital heart disease patients with single-ventricle physiology, accurate anatomical and hemodynamic evaluation prior to the Fontan completion procedure is critical for surgical planning and long-term outcomes. Although conventional catheter angiography (CCA) remains the reference standard for hemodynamic evaluation, cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) has emerged as an increasingly valuable tool for anatomical assessment in the preoperative evaluation of Fontan candidates. Objective: To compare the anatomical and hemodynamic information provided by CTA and CCA befo

Emerging biomedical imaging applications of tumor-derived extracellular vesicles for premetastatic niche detection: Biological rationale, engineering strategies, and translational challenges.

BACKGROUND: Accurate fetal imaging is essential to the practice of maternal-fetal medicine. While ultrasonography has been the traditional mainstay of fetal imaging, its ability to resolve critical features of central nervous system (CNS) anatomy remains limited. As interest in intrauterine therapy for myelomeningocele has increased, so has the need for more accurate, noninvasive imaging of the CNS. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) promises to fill the gap left by ultrasound. METHODS: Thirty-seven MRI scans of fetuses previously diagnosed with myelomeningocele were reviewed by 2 neurora

Transforming ear anatomy education: Evaluating the impact of innovative teaching methods on medical students' learning outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: The human ear is a complex organ, crucial for hearing and balance, divided into three main parts - the external, middle, and inner ear. Traditional teaching methods for ear anatomy, involving textbooks and lectures, often tend to be inadequate in conveying the three-dimensional relationships and intricate structures, leading to lower retention rates and limited understanding in students. AIM: To evaluate the impact of low-cost innovative teaching methods on students' perceptions of learning the intricate details of the inner and middle ear, comparing their perspectives before an

Bicuspid aortic valve disease: advancements and challenges of transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has revolutionized the treatment of patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). Initially developed for patients with tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) anatomy, the procedural success and expanding indications of TAVI have spurred interest in its application to more complex aortic valve anatomies, such as the bicuspid aortic valve (BAV). The growing interest in this specific sub-set of patients with AS is driven by the recent extension of TAVI indications to younger individuals, who exhibit a notably higher incidence of bicuspid anatomy compared with ol

Anatomical prior-based vertebral landmark detection for spinal disorder diagnosis.

As one of fundamental ways to interpret spine images, detection of vertebral landmarks is an informative prerequisite for further diagnosis and management of spine disorders such as scoliosis and fractures. Most existing machine learning-based methods for automatic vertebral landmark detection suffer from overlapping landmarks or abnormally long distances between nearby landmarks against anatomical priors, and thus lack sufficient reliability and interpretability. To tackle the problem, this paper systematically utilizes anatomical prior knowledge in vertebral landmark detection. We explicitly

Interhemispheric asymmetrical change in gray matter volume in patients with unilateral hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: To clarify the interhemispheric asymmetrical change in gray matter volume (GMV) in unilateral hippocampal sclerosis (HS), we compared changes in GMV relative to normal subjects between the HS and contralateral or non-HS sides. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-five patients with unilateral HS and 30 healthy subjects were enrolled. We quantified changes in GMV in the patients with HS as compared to GMV in the normal subjects by introducing the Z-score (Z-GMV) in each region or region of interest in unilateral HS. Then, we assessed the asymmetrically decreased regions, that is, regions wi

Antigenicity is preserved with fixative solutions used in human gross anatomy: A mice brain immunohistochemistry study.

BACKGROUND: Histology remains the gold-standard to assess human brain biology, so ex vivo studies using tissue from brain banks are standard practice in neuroscientific research. However, a larger number of specimens could be obtained from gross anatomy laboratories. These specimens are fixed with solutions appropriate for dissections, but whether they also preserve brain tissue antigenicity is unclear. Therefore, we perfused mice brains with solutions used for human body preservation to assess and compare the tissue quality and antigenicity of the main cell populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS

Tomotherapy and multifield intensity-modulated radiotherapy planning reduce cardiac doses in left-sided breast cancer patients with unfavorable cardiac anatomy.

PURPOSE: For patients with left-sided breast cancers, radiation treatment to the intact breast results in high doses to significant volumes of the heart, increasing the risk of cardiac morbidity, particularly in women with unfavorable cardiac anatomy. We compare helical tomotherapy (TOMO) and inverse planned intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy using opposed tangents (3D-CRT) for reductions in cardiac volumes receiving high doses. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifteen patients with left-sided breast cancers and unfavorable cardiac anatomy, determ
