While X-irradiated live parasites are not an acceptable proposition for human vaccination, they offer a ready experimental system to explore mechanisms by which immunity against hookworm infection may be induced in humans. As such, we sought to further elucidate the details of this highly protective immune response induced by the irradiated vaccine in canids, with special emphasis on the cellular aspects of the response. The relationship between paired hookworm prevalence and mean intensity of infection data from geographically defined communities was examined. The results show that, in spite of major socio-economic and environmental differences between communities, the relationship is consistent and non-linear. Fifty patients with bronchial asthma and 50 normal controls were studied in Hacettepe University Medical Center. Forty per cent of the patients with bronchial asthma and 14% of the controls had ascarides in the stool examinations. The significant difference in these two groups indicates that intestinal parasites, should be looked for in the patients with bronchial asthma.

Ancylostoma ceylanicum and Ancylostoma caninum were found in cats from Prachin Buri, Thailand, with infection rates of 92% and 23%, respectively. In this survey, 75% of cats were infected with A. ceylanicum alone, the rest had mixed infections of A. ceylanicum and A. caninum. The worm burden range in 26 cats for A. ceylanicum and A. caninum were 1 to 83 and 1 to 10, respectively. The course of self-induced infection with about 100 Ancylostoma duodenale larvae was followed by twice-weekly blood and stool examinations. After a small initial increase, no further change in eosinophil counts occurred until the 33rd week of infection when they began to increase sharply.
