Myofunctional evaluation after surgery for tonsils hypertrophy and its correlation to breathing pattern: a 2-year-follow up.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the myofunctional status in children submitted to adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy, correlating the pre and post-surgical patterns throughout a 24-month-period. To correlate the myofunctional alterations to the sort of surgery performed (adenoidectomy versus adenotonsillectomy) and to the predominant post-surgical breathing pattern (predominantly nasal versus allergic rhinitis). METHODS: Forty children were assessed by the otorhinolaryngologist and speech therapist before and 1-24 months after surgery. In order to evaluate myofunctional status, a pre-structured prot

Parental involvement in speech intervention: a national survey.

A survey of 277 speech language pathologists (SLPs) investigated beliefs and practice regarding parents' involvement in service planning and delivery for children with speech impairment. Although the SLPs frequently involved parents in service delivery for speech intervention, parental involvement in service planning was less frequent. SLPs working in educational settings involved parents to a lesser extent than SLPs working in health settings and private practice. More experienced SLPs involved parents less in decision-making. A gap between the SLPs' beliefs and practice was found, with state

Effects of phonemic awareness instruction on the encoding skills of children with severe speech impairment.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of phoneme-grapheme correspondence and phonemic awareness instruction on the encoding abilities of three pre-reading children with severe speech impairment (SSI). METHOD: Using a single subject multiple baseline design across behaviours and participants, children received phoneme-grapheme awareness instruction followed by instruction in segmenting, manipulating, and encoding consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pseudowords. RESULTS: Generalization occurred to encoding of novel CVC pseudo- and real words for two of the three participants. CONCLUSIONS: Results sugge

The role of the sphenoid bone in the connection between the temporal-mandible-tongue-hyoid system and the cervical spine.

The cranio-cervical-mandibular system is a functional complex whose understanding has evolved significantly, moving from a purely mechanical model to an integrated view that includes myofascial and postural interdependencies. Recent studies, particularly the work of Messina, have led to the definition of the Temporal-Mandible-Tongue-Hyoid (TMTH) system, a biomechanical unit in which the temporal bone acts as a fulcrum. This article aims to analyze the often-underestimated role of the sphenoid bone as a key element of anatomical and functional connection between the TMTH system and the upper ce

Circadian Health and Light: A Report on the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Workshop.

Despite the omnipresence of artificial and natural light exposure, there exists little guidance in the United States and elsewhere on light exposure in terms of timing, intensity, spectrum, and other light characteristics known to affect human health, performance, and well-being; in parallel, there is little information regarding the quantity and characteristics of light exposure that people receive. To address this, the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research, in the Division of Lung Diseases, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, held a workshop in August 2016 on circadian health an

Psychological assessment of psychopathology in opiate addicts.

A sample of 99 opiate addicts seeking treatment were assessed on three well established clinical assessment procedures; the Loevinger Sentence Completion, the Bellak Ego Functions Interview, and the Rorschach. Their scores were compared using normal and clinical reference groups. On all three procedures, opiate addicts had a significantly greater impairment than normals but significantly less thought disorder and impairments in ego functions than hospitalized borderline and psychotic patients. The results indicate that a primary disturbance in opiate addicts appears to be their relative inabil

Intellectual, behavioral, and linguistic characteristics of three children with 18p- syndrome.

Developmental characteristics of three girls with 18p- syndrome are described, with detailed history and results of psychological and speech/language evaluations completed at various ages. Results suggest that some children with 18p- syndrome have average abilities in selected areas, despite previous reports that these children have mild to severe mental retardation. Two of the three girls had more severe deficits in linguistic, as opposed to nonlinguistic, abilities. All had similar difficulties with speech articulation. It is suggested that children with speech/language delays who have physi

Speech motor development in childhood apraxia of speech: generating testable hypotheses by neurocomputational modeling.

Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a highly controversial clinical entity, with respect to both clinical signs and underlying neuromotor deficit. In the current paper, we advocate a modeling approach in which a computational neural model of speech acquisition and production is utilized in order to find the neuromotor deficits that underlie the diversity of phonological and speech-motor symptoms of CAS. Based on existing approaches and behavioral data, we first generated specific hypotheses about the underlying deficits. These hypotheses were then tested in a series of computer simulations, a

A longitudinal study of speech in 15 children with cleft lip and palate treated by late repair of the hard palate.

Since 1975, children with cleft lip and palate living in the western part of Sweden have been treated according to a regimen of early repair of the soft palate (at the age of 6-8 months) and late hard palate closure (at about 8-9 years of age). The present paper is a longitudinal study of 15 consecutive patients whose speech development was analysed at the mean ages (years:months) of 5:3, 7:0, 8:5, and 9:7 years. Hypernasality gradually decreased over the years whereas nasal escape almost completely ceased after closure of the residual cleft. There was no glottal articulation at any age. Despi

Complete morphofunctional oral rehabilitation by physiological increase of occlusal vertical dimension according to computerized mandibular scanner.

Increasing the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) is often indicated in complex oral rehabilitation to gain restorative space and improve the occlusal relationship and aesthetics. The effect of increasing the OVD on lower facial height and facial aesthetics is not well understood and evaluated. The authors present the philosophy of the neuromuscular concept and illustrate it through a case report of a 58-year-old female patient who presented severe deep bite, bruxism, and temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). After clinical evaluation, the extraoral examination showed a reduction of the lower fac

Association between phonation and the vowel quadrilateral in patients with stroke: A retrospective observational study.

Articulation disorder is associated with impaired control of respiration and speech organ movement. There are many cases of dysarthria and dysphonia in stroke patients. Dysphonia adversely affects communication and social activities, and it can interfere with everyday life. The purpose of this study is to assess the association between phonation abilities and the vowel quadrilateral in stroke patients. The subjects were stroke patients with pronunciation and phonation disorders. The resonance frequency was measured for the 4 corner vowels to measure the vowel space area (VSA) and formant centra

A phenomenological approach to the phenomena of anxiety: a scoping review.

The increasing number of diagnoses of anxiety disorders has highlighted the need for discussions about anxiety in its affective, psychopathological, and mundane dimensions. This scoping review mapped 36 scientific articles (2014-2025) to analyze how Phenomenology contributes to the understanding of anxiety as a global phenomenon. The results highlight trends in the field in 4 discursive categories. For authors of Phenomenological Psychopathology, anxiety is understood as a global alteration of being-in-the-world, characterized by disturbances in temporality (dysrhythmia, narrowing of the futur

Characterization of language profile in children with critical congenital heart disease.

BACKGROUND: While motor and cognitive development in children with congenital heart defects has been well documented over recent decades, language development has received considerably less attention-particularly in French-speaking populations. This study aimed to characterize the language profiles of children with critical congenital heart disease using standardized speech and language assessments and to identify associated vulnerability factors. METHODS: We assessed 33 children aged 5 to 6.5 years, all of whom had undergone cardiac surgery or catheterization before 6 months of age and had n

Comparing token-based and trajectory-based vowel space metrics for assessing speech in Parkinson's disease.

This study assessed the ability of three acoustic measures of vowel space, two token-based and one trajectory-based, to quantify speech differences in people with Parkinson's disease compared to controls and correlations with speech intelligibility. Fifty-six speakers (28 people with Parkinson's and 28 controls) read a custom reading passage containing corner vowels. For token-based measures, the triangular vowel space area (tVSA) in kHz2 and the unitless ratio of vowel articulation index (VAI) were calculated. For the trajectory-based measure, the articulatory-acoustic vowel space (AAVS) in k
