Beyond motor hyperactivity: Racing thoughts are an integral symptom of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Adults with ADHD experience mental restlessness, akin to racing thoughts, but data on this symptom in ADHD remain scarce. Our study aims at investigating self-reported racing thoughts in adults with ADHD, and its relationship with affective dysregulation and insomnia. We were also interested in whether racing thoughts may aid differential diagnosis with bipolar disorder (BD). 182 adults with ADHD, 30 ADHD+BD, 31 hypomanic BD, and 20 euthymic BD patients completed the Racing and Crowded Thoughts Questionnaire (RCTQ). ADHD, anxiety, insomnia and depression symptoms, as well as affective temperam

Case report: Treatment of persistent atypical odontalgia with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism spectrum disorder with risperidone and atomoxetine.

Chronic pain has recently been associated with developmental disorders [autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)]. Regarding chronic pain in adulthood, fibromyalgia, migraine, and chronic low back pain have been associated with ADHD. The ICD-11 disease classification categorizes these pain diseases as chronic primary pain, suggesting high comorbidity with developmental disorders in chronic primary pain. Atypical odontalgia (AO) is a persistent tooth pain that occurs in the absence of any of the usual dental causes, most of which are triggered by dental

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults with bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder: results from the international mood disorders collaborative project.

OBJECTIVE: Relatively few studies have evaluated the clinical implications of lifetime attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults with bipolar disorder or major depressive disorder (MDD). Herein, we sought to determine the prevalence as well as the demographic and clinical correlates of lifetime ADHD in persons with a mood disorder. METHOD: The first 399 patients enrolled in the International Mood Disorders Collaborative Project (IMDCP) were evaluated for lifetime ADHD using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview-Plus (MINI-Plus) as the primary instrument to derive c

What Predicts Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Literacy in Primary Schoolteachers?

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition affecting children's learning and behaviour. Teachers play a pivotal role in early identification, yet little is known about factors predicting their ADHD literacy in India. AIMS: This study was conducted to evaluate the Mental Health Literacy (MHL) of primary schoolteachers regarding ADHD and to identify the predictors of MHL among teachers. METHODS: A cross-sectional, quantitative study was conducted among 303 primary schoolteachers. The study period was from December 2023 to June 2024. The

Demographics, Services, and Practices in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Coaching in the US.

IMPORTANCE: Individuals with ADHD face great challenges accessing formal psychosocial treatment. ADHD coaching has rapidly emerged online as a popular and accessible form of grassroots psychosocial support; however, there is a paucity of documentation about this workforce or the safety and effectiveness of its services. OBJECTIVE: To document patterns in the ADHD coaching workforce, including workforce entry dates, services, and coach characteristics. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The US National Survey on ADHD Coaching was conducted from October 1, 2024, to April 3, 2025, using a purpo

Effect of Australian telepsychiatry services on attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder prescriptions.

OBJECTIVES: Telepsychiatry expansion has facilitated patient access to ADHD assessments in Australia, yet the determinants of access remain underexplored. We examined provider- and patient-level factors associated with ADHD-related video consultations and assessed policy impacts on ADHD-linked video consultations. We hypothesised that the expansion and consolidation of telepsychiatry policies led to a preferential, market-driven increase in video-mode consultations for ADHD prescriptions, shaped by sociodemographic and geographical factors. METHODS: We analysed nearly 4 million psychiatric co

Sleep disturbances in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: State of the art and management.

Sleep disorders are a frequent comorbidity in patients with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), from childhood through adulthood. These disturbances include sleep-related complaints such as insomnia symptoms and daytime sleepiness, as well as well-defined sleep pathologies such as sleep-disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome, and circadian rhythm disorders. These disturbances have a significant impact on cognition, emotional regulation, and patients' quality of life. Sleep disorders thus maintain a bidirectional relationship with ADHD: on the one hand, altered sleep can exac

Investigation of quantitative synthetic MRI in the evaluation of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Currently, synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (SyMRI) has been considered as a promising way to characterize intrinsic microstructural tissue alterations by quantitatively measuring tissue relaxation times. This study aimed to explore the utility of combining machine learning algorithms with SyMRI for identifying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and further revealing its underlying brain pathology. METHODS: Multiple quantitative parameters (T1 and T2 relaxometry values and myelin volume fraction) of whole-brain gray and white matter derived from SyMRI data on 50 i

[Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and cardiometabolic diseases: prevalence, etiology and treatment].

There is a close connection throughout the lifespan between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. According to current knowledge, the causes are genetic factors, dopamine metabolism disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, inflammatory processes and, last but not least, an unhealthy lifestyle. The treatment of individuals with ADHD and comorbid cardiometabolic diseases requires an individualized approach with lifestyle changes, psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, taking possi

Challenges and Opportunities: Identification and Monitoring of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Pediatrics.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that typically presents in childhood and can cause significant impairment from youth into adulthood across multiple settings (eg, school, home). Pediatricians are the most likely health professionals to identify and treat ADHD. However, ADHD symptoms often overlap with other common mental health disorders, making accurate identification challenging. The diagnosis of ADHD relies on a combination of history gathering, screening tools, and clinical judgment. In this article, we review tools and strategies for

Arousal dysregulation and executive dysfunction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition, that continues to have an elusive etiological background. A number of extant models and theories have historically intended to explain the many factors contributing to ADHD behaviors. One of the most accepted hypotheses has been the executive dysfunction theory associating reduction in executive control to abnormalities in structure and operational dysfunction of dopaminergic signaling networks. Nevertheless, executive functions are not always impaired in ADHD, and the literature describes other sy

Non-pharmacological interventions for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and adolescents.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects approximately 5% of children and adolescents globally and is associated with negative life outcomes and socioeconomic costs. First-generation ADHD treatments were predominantly pharmacological; however, increased understanding of biological, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to ADHD has expanded non-pharmacological treatment possibilities. This Review provides an updated evaluation of the efficacy and safety of non-pharmacological treatments for paediatric ADHD, discussing the quality and level of evidence for nine int

Remote neurocognitive interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder - Opportunities and challenges.

Improving neurocognitive functions through remote interventions has been a promising approach to developing new treatments for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Remote neurocognitive interventions may address the shortcomings of the current prevailing pharmacological therapies for AD/HD, e.g., side effects and access barriers. Here we review the current options for remote neurocognitive interventions to reduce AD/HD symptoms, including cognitive training, EEG neurofeedback training, transcranial electrical stimulation, and external cranial nerve stimulation. We begin with an ov
