Monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) were generated following immunization of BALB/c mice with protective antigen (PA) of B. anthracis. Five clones reactive to this protein were stabilized and preserved. These MoAbs could detect nanogram levels of PA when tested in ELISA. In Western blotting, they reacted with all PA preparations tested and no cross-reactivity was observed with lethal factor, edema factor of B. anthracis and with other organisms. Aedes aegypti (black-eyed Liverpool strain) were exposed to a sublethal dose (LD25) of Bacillus sphaericus and were fed to Mastomys coucha infected with Brugia malayi. The development of the filarial parasite was found to be arrested mostly at the second larval stage. The infection (P < 0.05), infectivity rates (P < 0.001) and L3 load (P < 0.001) were found to be reduced significantly in the treated group.

Three different formulations of Bacillus sphaericus viz, Spherimos, Vectobac and Spherifix, were evaluated for their efficacy and residual activity against Culex quinquefasciatus breeding in polluted disused wells. Inbred mice of the C3H/He (resistant) and C57BL/6 (susceptible) strains and their hybrids were used in experiments to investigate the genetic regulation of host resistance to B. anthracis. The susceptibility of F1 mice to a standard spore suspension was similar to that of the resistant parent and not intermediate between values for the parent strains. There were no differences in mortality rate between F1 and reciprocal cross mice. Analysis of the results indicated that resistance of mice to B. anthracis is regulated by a single dominant gene.

The nucleotide sequence of the protective antigen (PA) gene from Bacillus anthracis and the 5' and 3' flanking sequences were determined. A 22-year-old black female intravenous cocaine addict presented with an endophthalmitis of the right eye. Diagnostic evaluation included an immediate anterior chamber paracentesis and a delayed vitreous aspiration. Although cultures from the involved eye were negative, all 7 blood cultures grew Bacillus cereus suggesting that this organism was the responsible agent of an endogenous endophthalmitis. The patient was treated with appropriate systemic and local antibiotics with resolution of the acute inflammatory signs. However, a phthisical eye has been noted on follow-up examinations.

A patient with a diffuse histiocytic lymphoma developed an infection caused by Bacillus cereus during a period of induced granulocytopenia. A fulminant process resembling gas gangrene developed shortly after the accidental penetration by a small piece of metal into his right hand. Incision and drainage as well as antimicrobial therapy did not prevent the loss of the third, fourth and fifth fingers; however, localization and subsequent control of the infection was achieved concomitant with bone marrow recovery.
