Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Impairs Fear Extinction and Network Excitability in the Infralimbic Cortex.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of morbidity and disability, with mild TBI (concussions) representing over 80% of cases. Although often considered benign, mild TBI is associated with persistent neuropsychiatric conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and depression. A hallmark of these conditions is impaired fear extinction (FE), the process by which learned fear responses are inhibited in safe contexts. This dysfunction contributes to maladaptive fear expression and is linked to altered neurocircuitry, particularly in the infralimbic cortex (IL), a key r

Comment on a Multicenter Retrospective Descriptive and Analytical Study of 129 Cases of Trichoteiromania.

We have read Ramos Costa et al.'s publication "Trichoteiromania: A multicentre retrospective descriptive and analytical study of 129 cases" in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology, and comment on some critical issues related to the nosology, nomenclature, and methodology. The term trichoteiromania was originally coined for the rubbing of the hair due to an underlying psychiatric disorder without further specifications. Based on case observations of patients with trichoteiromania, it was later reported that in contrast to trichotillomania that represents an obsessive-compulsive di

Investigating the factors influencing Repeatedly Crash-Involved Drivers (RCIDs): A Random Parameter Hazard-Based Duration approach.

Repeatedly Crash-Involved Drivers (RCIDs) pose significant challenges to traffic safety, contributing disproportionately to crash occurrences and their severe consequences. While existing research has explored factors influencing crash involvement, the literature often neglects the influence of a driver's crash history and inter-crash intervals on their evolving crash risk. Additionally, many traditional models fail to address unobserved heterogeneity, limiting their ability to capture the complex interplay of factors contributing to repeated crash involvement. This study investigates the fact

Understanding the binding behavior of Malathion with calf thymus DNA by spectroscopic, cell viability and molecular dynamics simulation techniques: binary and ternary systems comparison.

The interaction between calf thymus DNA (ctDNA) and Malathion in the absence and presence of Histone 1 has been enquired by the means of spectroscopic, viscometry, molecular modeling, and cell viability assay techniques. Malathion is capable of quenching the fluorescence of ct DNA in the absence and presence of H1. The binding constants of Malathion-ctDNA complex in the absence of H1 have been calculated to be 6.62 × 104, 4.31 × 104 and 1.93 × 104 M-1 at 298, 303, and 308 K, respectively that revealed static quenching in complex formation. The observed negative values of enthalpy and entropy c

Efficacy of a transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral intervention for eating disorder psychopathology delivered through a smartphone app: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although effective treatments exist for diagnostic and subthreshold-level eating disorders (EDs), a significant proportion of affected individuals do not receive help. Interventions translated for delivery through smartphone apps may be one solution towards reducing this treatment gap. However, evidence for the efficacy of smartphones apps for EDs is lacking. We developed a smartphone app based on the principles and techniques of transdiagnostic cognitive-behavioral therapy for EDs and evaluated it through a pre-registered randomized controlled trial. METHODS: Symptomatic individu

Microglia dependent BDNF and proBDNF can impair spatial memory performance during persistent inflammatory pain.

Inflammatory pain is commonly associated with cognitive impairment. However, its molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. Thus, this study was conducted to investigate the molecular mechanisms of behavioral changes associated with inflammatory pain. Briefly, 36 Wistar rats were randomly divided into two main groups: CFA group treated with 100 μL of Complete Freunds' Adjuvant (CFA) and CFA + Minocycline group treated with 100 μL of CFA+40 mg/kg/day of minocycline). After that, each group was divided into three subgroups based on different time points of the study. The pain was induced using

Speaking behavior and voice sound characteristics in depressive patients during recovery.

Based on a sample of 30 depressive patients, we have investigated the time course of recovery from depression in so far as this time course was assessable through changes in psychopathology syndrome scores and through changes in speaking behavior and voice sound characteristics. Specifically, our study design provided 6 repeated assessments over 2 weeks and at a fixed time in the morning each Monday, Wednesday and Friday, plus a final assessment at the patients' releases from hospital. Thus, we were able to determine the degree to which single-parameter approaches to speaking behavior and voic

Features of the response to subchronic low-dose exposure to copper oxide nanoparticles in rats.

Copper is an essential trace element for human health and, at the same time, a major industrial metal widely used both in its elemental form and in compounds. We conducted a dose-dependent assessment of the response of outbred albino male rats to subchronic low-dose exposure to copper oxide nanoparticles administered intraperitoneally at cumulative doses of 18 and 36 mg/kg during 6 weeks to exposure groups 1 and 2, respectively. We observed disorders at different levels of organization of the body in the exposed animals, from molecular to organismal. The observed decrease in the activity of su

Suppression of Macroscopic Phase Separation in Polymer Blends Confined within the Interstitial Pores of Dense Nanoparticle Packings.

Polymer blends often suffer from macroscopic phase separation due to incompatibility, with conventional compatibilization techniques relying on kinetically trapped, inhomogeneous structures. Here, we show that confining prototypical immiscible polymers, polystyrene (PS) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), within the interstices of a nanoparticle packing effectively suppresses phase separation at the macroscopic scale. By varying the confinement ratio (Γ, the ratio of a bulk polymer's radius of gyration to the nanoparticle packing's pore radius) between 0.6 and 2.2 through modulating the poly

Whole-Brain Structural Connectivity Alterations in Chronic Subjective Tinnitus: An Exploratory Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study.

Background/Objectives: Subjective tinnitus, the underlying mechanism of which remains largely unknown, accounts for the majority of cases. Although conventional MRI and audiometric assessments demonstrate limited effectiveness in identifying organic causes, advanced microstructural techniques-such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fiber tractography-facilitate the evaluation of microanatomical connectivity related to auditory processing. This study employed DTI to examine alterations in microanatomical brain connectivity in patients with chronic subjective tinnitus, in comparison to a heal

Reduction of oxytocin plasma levels in borderline personality disorder and normalization induced by psychotherapies.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsive behaviors, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Despite the poor understanding of the underlying biological processes, the oxytocin (OXT) system may be involved in and mediate some of BPD's symptomatic and behavioral aspects. To clarify OXT's role in BPD, we assessed its plasma levels and modulations induced by psychotherapies in patients. METHODS: Fifty BPD patients and 28 healthy controls (HC) participated in the study; patients were randomly assigned

Development and evaluation of a computer vision algorithm for quantification of children's microactivities.

BACKGROUND: Estimates of microactivity (e.g., hand- and object-to-mouth contact) frequencies are essential for modeling children's environmental exposures but are challenging to obtain due to the time and human costs of manually labeling behaviors from pre-recorded videos. OBJECTIVES: We aim to develop and evaluate a computer vision model to quantify microactivities for young children. METHODS: The vision model was trained and validated using video footage (collected via four concurrent Go-Pro cameras) of 25 children 6-18 months playing in their homes in Baltimore, MD. We leveraged computer

Expanding the Scope of Open Weighing to Target Anxiety About the Consequences of Weight Gain in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety about weight gain is a central feature of eating disorders (EDs) and plays a key role in maintaining ED symptomatology. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) experts have observed that patients with EDs often believe regular eating will lead to immediate, dramatic, and/or uncontrollable weight gain, prompting interventions like "collaborative weighing" and "open weighing" that help patients develop a realistic understanding of eating-weight relationships. However, patients also report anxiety about the consequences of weight gain (e.g., social rejection, self-hatred, permanent

A mathematical framework of HIV and TB co-infection dynamics.

The biological processes involved in diseases like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis (TB) require extensive research, particularly when both diseases occur together. This piece of research delves to explore a new fractional-order mathematical model that examines the co-dynamics of HIV and TB, taking into account the treatment effects. Although no definitive vaccine or cure for HIV exists, antiretroviral therapy (ART) can slow disease spread and prevent subsequent complications. The basic properties of the fractional model in the Caputo sense, including existence, uniqueness,

Psychologically based interventions for adults with chronic neuropathic pain: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: As psychologically based interventions have been shown to have clinical utility for adults with chronic pain generally, a similar benefit might be expected in the management of chronic neuropathic pain (NeuP). However, to date, this has not been established, with existing systematic reviews on this topic being hampered by the scarcity of randomized controlled trials (RCTs). This review aimed to identify the type of psychologically based interventions studied for adults with chronic NeuP. It also aimed to assess whether there are enough RCTs to justify undertaking an updated systemat

Neural correlates of language disfunction in psychiatric disorders: a developmental perspective.

Language forms the foundation of social interactions, allowing us to connect with family and peers. Through speech, we express our thoughts and emotions to others. Experiencing challenges in speech and language functions during development can therefore significantly affect social relationships, cognitive and affective development. In child and adolescence psychiatry, clinicians have observed that speech and language abilities may be altered in various mental (behavioral/developmental) disorders (psychiatric disorders). This review provides an overview of systematic and original investigations
