OBJECTIVES: To determine the lung cancer screening yield and stages in a union-sponsored low-dose computerized tomography scan program for nuclear weapons workers with diverse ages, smoking histories, and occupations.
METHODS: We implemented a low-dose computerized tomography program among 7189 nuclear weapons workers in 9 nonmetropolitan US communities during 2000 to 2013. Eligibility criteria included age, smoking, occupation, radiographic asbestos-related fibrosis, and a positive beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test.

Sarcoidosis is a disease of unknown etiology, characterized pathologically by noncaseating granulomas that most commonly involve the lung, skin, lymph nodes, and eyes. Syndromes with similar pathological and immunologic features to sarcoidosis such as chronic beryllium disease, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and tuberculosis illustrate that granulomatous diseases may or may not have an infectious etiology. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrophoderma of Pasini and Pierini (APP) is an uncommon cutaneous disorder, with no known effective treatment, manifested by hyperpigmented patches that appear to be depressed compared with surrounding skin. A mehtod of measuring body nitrogen by neutron capture gamma analysis is described. The neutron flux is provided by four collimated 5 Ci Pu-Be sources, placed to give a bilateral irradiation of the subject. The 10-83 MeV thermal neutron capture gamma rays from 14N are detected by two heavily shielded 5 in X 4 in NaI(Tl) detectors. Results indicate a reproducibility +/-3% (1 SD) for a 10 min irradiation of the chest area, while giving a radiation dose equivalent of 50 mREM.

Using density-functional theory calculations, we determined the pressure domain of stability of beryllium metasilicate, BeSiO3, an elusive compound for which no stable polymorph is known until now. We found that BeSiO3 is stable at pressures above 9 GPa, a condition that makes it accessible with a large-volume press.
