A library of experimental collision cross sections for food, beverage and plant metabolites generated by reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled to travelling-wave ion mobility and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Collision cross section (CCS), considered an ion-specific physicochemical property derived from ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), has become a valuable orthogonal descriptor for metabolite characterisation. When coupled with liquid chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, CCS enables a multidimensional analytical approach to address challenging metabolite annotation, particularly for isomeric compounds or when reference standards are unavailable. In food and plant metabolomics, where chemical diversity is vast and reference databases are limited, expanding experimental CCS librarie

Effects of thickened carbonated cola in older patients with dysphagia.

Carbonated beverages initiate the swallowing reflex earlier than water and have a shorter pharyngeal transit time. However, the effects of carbonation in thickened beverages of the same flavor on swallowing dynamics have not been reported. Therefore, we investigated the effects of thickened carbonated beverages on swallowing in patients with dysphagia by comparing the swallowing dynamics between thickened carbonated and thickened non-carbonated beverages. We enrolled 38 patients with dysphagia and divided them into two groups. Thickened carbonated and thickened non-carbonated beverages were us…

Association of food form with self-reported 24-h energy intake and meal patterns in US adults: NHANES 2003-2008.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory studies suggest that food form (beverages compared with solid foods) evokes behavioral and physiologic responses that modify short-term appetite and food intake. Beverage energy may be less satiating and poorly compensated, which leads to higher energy intake. OBJECTIVE: We examined associations between 24-h energy consumed in beverages and a variety of meal and dietary attributes to quantify the contribution of beverage consumption to the energy content of diets in free-living individuals consuming their self-selected diets. DESIGN: We used dietary recall data for adu…
