Antiviral vaccines have been the most successful biomedical intervention for preventing epidemic viral disease. Vaccination for smallpox in humans and rinderpest in cattle was the basis for disease eradication, and recent progress in polio eradication is promising. Although early vaccines were developed empirically by passage in live animals or eggs, more recent vaccines have been developed because of the advent of new technologies, particularly cell culture and molecular biology. Recent technological advances in gene delivery and expression, nanoparticles, protein manufacturing, and adjuvants

Noble metal nanostructures based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can induce metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), significantly improving trace detection sensitivity for biomedical and chemical analysis. While self-assembly of noble metal nanoparticles offers simplicity and low equipment dependence, achieving large-area, uniform, and controllable nanostructures remains challenging. In this study, angle-dependent dip coating (ADDC) technology was employed to achieve efficient, controllable self-assembly of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on g

Silicon-based microring resonator (SMRR), as a typical application of label-free detection in optical biosensors, performs advantages such as small size, high sensitivity, and ease of integration, making it suitable for detecting physical, chemical, and biological signals. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with high concealment, while early intervention can effectively slow its progression. For early diagnosis of AD, optical detection platforms based on SMRR can effectively overcome the challenges posed by low-abundance biomarkers and interfering factors in blood

Millions of women worldwide suffer from a variety of health conditions, including vaginal bacterial and yeast infections, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory disorders, and hormonal abnormalities. Despite major advances in biomedical research, traditional intravaginal drug administration systems such as gels, creams, and suppositories frequently encounter issues such as fast drug clearance, leakage, and uneven mucosal retention, reducing therapeutic effectiveness. Microneedles, a painless and less invasive drug delivery technology, represent a

Recent medical research involving human-monkey chimeras, human brain organoids in rats, and the transplantation of a gene-edited pig heart and gene-edited pig kidneys in living human beings have intensified the debate about whether we should create human-animal chimeras for biomedical purposes and, if so, how we should treat them. Influential views in the debate frequently appeal to assumptions regarding how people will react to such chimeras. It has, for example, been argued that the most important objection against creating such chimeras is that this will result in inexorable moral confusion

Laboratory rats have been used in biomedical research for over 170 years. Recently, genome editing technology has facilitated the generation of genetically modified rats worldwide. This development has increased the demand for efficient preservation and production of rat resources. Sperm cryopreservation is the most efficient and robust means to archive genetic resources, and this technique reduces the number of animals required for colony management. Previously, we have reported a protocol for rat sperm cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization using frozen-thawed sperm. Here we describe an

Tissue and organ failure has induced immense economic and healthcare concerns across the world. Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary biomedical approach which aims to address the issues intrinsic to organ donation by providing an alternative strategy to tissue and organ transplantation. This review is specifically focused on cartilage tissue. Cartilage defects cannot readily regenerate, and thus research into tissue engineering approaches is relevant as a potential treatment option. Cells, scaffolds, and growth factors are three components that can be utilized to regenerate new tissue, a

Computerised virtual patients (VPs) are increasingly being used in medical education. With more use of this technology, there is a need to increase the knowledge of students' experiences with VPs. The aim of the study was to elicit the nature of virtual patients in a clinical setting, taking the students' experience as a point of departure. Thirty-one students used VPs as a mandatory part of an early clinical rotation in rheumatology. Using the qualitative approach of phenomenology, we interviewed these students and then analysed data regarding their experiences of VPs as a learning activity.

PCR was introduced in 1985 by Mullis and was immediately recognized as a valuable tool in biomedical research and was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1993. Two culture-negative meningitis cases are described where Haemophilus influenzae and Neisseria meningitidis were found by 16SRNA-PCR. The modern real time PCR technology using fluorescent probes (hybridization probes, lightup probes, molecular beacons etc) for detection of the PCR-product or on DNA microarray chips, is under development for routine use. Multiplex technology can be used to simultaneously detect multiple microorganisms as well as

The utilization of extensive datasets, such as those generated by DNA or RNA sequencing, has become a central focus in drug discovery and personalized medicine (PerMed). Nonetheless, these datasets are constrained by the absence of protein-functionality testing, which affects physiological responses. In this study, we employed PamGene PamStation technology to quantify protein function by kinase activity across more than 500 signaling pathways from patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Using proteins derived from nine patients and five human HCC cell lines for drug discovery and the cli

Tissue engineering encompasses a range of techniques that direct the growth of cells into a living tissue construct for regenerative medicine applications, disease models, drug discovery, and safety testing. These techniques have been implemented to alleviate the clinical burdens of impaired healing of skin, bone, and other tissues. Construct development requires the integration of tissue-specific cells and/or an extracellular matrix-mimicking biomaterial for structural support. Production of such constructs is generally expensive and environmentally costly, thus eco-sustainable approaches sho

Although men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionately affected by HIV and other sexually transmissible infections, sexual health services for MSM in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) remain under-resourced and are poorly understood. A scoping review of literature on MSM sexual health in LMIC was conducted in order to identify key clinical services and gaps in knowledge. Three databases were searched, in addition to hand-reviewing key journals and bulletins, to identify literature with a focus on MSM sexual health. Key services related to providing care to MSM in LMIC that emerg

Direct conversion of human fibroblasts into mature and functional neurons, termed induced neurons (iNs), was achieved for the first time 6 years ago. This technology offers a promising shortcut for obtaining patient- and disease-specific neurons for disease modeling, drug screening, and other biomedical applications. However, fibroblasts from adult donors do not reprogram as easily as fetal donors, and no current reprogramming approach is sufficiently efficient to allow the use of this technology using patient-derived material for large-scale applications. Here, we investigate the difference i

Pig pluripotent cells may represent an advantageous experimental tool for developing therapeutic application in the human biomedical field. However, it has previously been proven to be difficult to establish from the early embryo and its pluripotency has not been distinctly documented. In recent years, induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology provides a new method of reprogramming somatic cells to pluripotent state. The generation of iPS cells together with or without certain small molecules has become a routine technique. However, the generation of iPS cells from pig embryonic tissues u

Hybrid liposome/metal nanoparticles are promising candidate drug-carriers for therapy of various diseases due to their unique photothermal effect. In this study, self-crystallized gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and doxorubicin (DOX) were co-encapsulated within liposomes (Au/DOX-Lips) by thin film hydration and gel separation technology. The surface plasmon resonance bands of drug-carriers were controllable in the near-infrared (NIR) zone. When the complex liposome/metallic hybrids were irradiated by NIR light, they displayed higher endocytosis efficiency following the fracture of liposomal membra

Understanding the spatiotemporal changes of cellular and molecular events within an organism is crucial to elucidate the complex immune processes involved in infections, autoimmune disorders, transplantation, and neoplastic transformation and metastasis. Here we introduce a novel multicolor light sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) approach for deciphering immune processes in large tissue specimens on a single-cell level in 3 dimensions. We combined and optimized antibody penetration, tissue clearing, and triple-color illumination to create a method for analyzing intact mouse and human tissue
