Prospective Measurement of Daily Health Behaviors: Modeling Temporal Patterns in Missing Data, Sexual Behavior, and Substance Use in an Online Daily Diary Study of Gay and Bisexual Men.

Daily diary and other intensive longitudinal methods are increasingly being used to investigate fluctuations in psychological and behavioral processes. To inform the development of this methodology, we sought to explore predictors of and patterns in diary compliance and behavioral reports. We used multilevel modeling to analyze data from an online daily diary study of 371 gay and bisexual men focused on sexual behavior and substance use. We found that greater education and older age as well as lower frequency of substance use were associated with higher compliance. Using polynomial and trigono

An Event-Level Analysis of Condom Use During Anal Intercourse Among Self-Reported Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Negative Gay and Bisexual Men in a Treatment as Prevention Environment.

BACKGROUND: We sought to identify factors associated with condom use during anal intercourse among self-identified human immunodeficiency virus-negative gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in Vancouver, Canada following "treatment as prevention" (TasP) scale-up in 2010. METHODS: Sexually active GBM were recruited using respondent-driven sampling from 2012 to 2014. We analyzed participants' most recent sexual encounter with up to their last 5 sexual partners within the past 6 months. In addition to individual- and event-level explanatory factors, we assessed potential asso

Sexual Behavior Varies Between Same-Race and Different-Race Partnerships: A Daily Diary Study of Highly Sexually Active Black, Latino, and White Gay and Bisexual Men.

Racial homophily (partnering with those of the same race) has been suggested as contributing to racial disparities in HIV among gay and bisexual men (GBM). Using a daily diary study, we examined racial homophily and its role in anal sexual behaviors in a sample of highly sexually active Black, White, and Latino GBM (N = 294, n = 3107 sexual events). In general, (1) men tended to partner with others of the same race, (2) HIV was more prevalent among men of color, and (3) race acted independent of whether one would engage in behaviors that would put them at highest risk for transmitting HIV (i.e

Seroprevalence of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 and sexual behaviors in bisexual African-American and Hispanic men visiting a sexually transmitted disease clinic in New York City.

A cross-sectional human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) serosurvey was conducted between January 1988 and January 1993 at a New York City sexually transmitted disease clinic serving predominantly African-American and Hispanic patients. Overall, 14% (415/3,069) of participating men reported having sex with men; among these, only 52 (13%) were classified as "homosexual" (having had sex with men exclusively since 1978). Most men (87%) who reported having sex with other men also reported having sex with women. These included 147 (35%) "bisexuals" (sex with more than one man and at least one

Awareness, willingness to use and use of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in China: a national cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately impact gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in China. Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) can prevent syphilis and chlamydia among GBMSM; however, it has not yet been officially endorsed in China. This study aims to investigate the perceptions and use of DoxyPEP among GBMSM in a nationwide sample. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide online cross-sectional survey in China between November 2024 and February 2025. Participants were recruited through community-based organizations and Ce

Anal HPV type prevalence in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men following an opportunistic HPV vaccination programme in Scotland: a repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are at increased risk of anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and subsequent development of anal cancer. An opportunistic HPV vaccination programme for GBMSM and those at similar risk for HPV infection was launched in Scotland in July 2017 using the quadrivalent vaccine. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the HPV vaccination programme for GBMSM by monitoring changes in the prevalence of HPV types. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional study was undertaken collecting and HPV typing rectal swab samples from

Discrimination, Stress, and Substance Use Among Ethnoracial Minority Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men: Findings from the NIH All of Us Research Program.

BACKGROUND: Unhealthy alcohol, marijuana, and cocaine use are major public health concerns among ethnoracial minority gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), who experience compounded stressors related to sexual and ethnoracial minority identities. Guided by the Minority Stress Model, this study examined pathways linking everyday discrimination, perceived stress, and substance use among ethnoracial minority GBMSM. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether everyday discrimination is associated with unhealthy alcohol use, whether perceived stress mediates the association between discri

Chemsex and uptake of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis among adult cisgender gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men worldwide: a systematic review with meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of summarized information regarding the uptake of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among HIV negative gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) who engage in chemsex. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to summarize, assess the quality of existing evidence, estimate the prevalence of PrEP uptake among GBMSM who engage in chemsex, based on available global evidence; and evaluate whether engagement in chemsex is associated with increased odds of PrEP uptake in this population. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase, Cochrane Reviews and CENTRA

A rapidly developing outbreak of clade Ib mpox among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men associated with severe proctitis, Northern Ireland, June 2026.

We describe a rapidly expanding clade Ib mpox outbreak among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Northern Ireland. Following 12 months with no detected mpox cases, 22 confirmed cases were notified between 6 and 30 June 2026. Cases had a median age of 41 years; 19 had not travelled outside the United Kingdom or Ireland in the 21 days before symptom onset. The outbreak is characterised by severe anorectal disease and presentation to non-sexual health settings, including secondary care.

Annual HIV incidence among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in England, 2014 to 2023: a prospective cohort analysis using national surveillance data.

OBJECTIVES: Following the fall in new HIV diagnoses in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) since 2015, the English government published an HIV Action Plan in 2021 committing to end HIV transmission by 2030. Underlying HIV transmission and access to testing influence diagnosis trends and may not reflect incidence as people could be living with undiagnosed HIV for many years. We derived HIV incidence by clinical risk markers and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use. METHODS: Using GUMCAD STI surveillance data between 2014/2015 and 2022/2023, we calculated yearly HIV inciden

Unpacking "High-Risk": A Latent Class Analysis of Sexual Partnership Patterns and HIV Transmission Risk Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men in Perú.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) are often considered a homogenous "high-risk" group. We aimed to differentiate subgroups based on participants' last sexual partner and explore associations with HIV transmission risk factors. SETTING: We utilized cross-sectional data (06/2022 to 03/2023) from "high-risk" GBMSM in Lima, Perú. METHODS: Participants included cisgender men and gender nonconforming adults assigned male at birth reporting condomless anal sex with ≥1 serodiscordant or unknown serostatus cisgender man or transgender woman in the past 6 months. The Role of Human Papillomavirus Genotypes on Anal Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Living With HIV: Beyond HPV-16.

Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (hHPV) infection, especially HPV-16, plays a central role in the development of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of co-testing (cytology and hHPV detection) in a real-world cohort of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TW) living with HIV. We conducted a prospective study (2017-2023) at a tertiary care center in Spain. MSM and TW living with HIV underwent screening with anal cytology and PCR-based hHPV testing. High-resolution anoscopy (HRA) with biopsy was performed in

The influence of tobacco use, hazardous drinking, and other risk factors on HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer risk and screening perceptions among gay and bisexual men: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Oropharyngeal cancer is the eighth most common cancer among US men and its incidence is sharply rising. Oropharyngeal cancer manifests in two major ways: the classic form is prevalent among people who use alcohol and tobacco heavily, while a growing subset of incident cases is associated with human papillomavirus-16 (HPV) and transmitted via oral sex. Gay and bisexual men appear at higher risk for each etiologic subset of oropharyngeal cancer than heterosexual men. We conducted a cross-sectional study to learn how tobacco use, hazardous drinking, and other key risk factors affect g

Factors Associated with the Awareness of and Willingness to Use HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men, Baltimore, MD, 2017-2019.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an effective tool in protecting persons from acquiring HIV infection through sex or injection drug use. However, awareness and willingness to use PrEP among Black gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (BMSM) remain suboptimal compared to White MSM (WMSM) in the United States. Our aims were to (1) assess the factors associated with PrEP awareness and willingness to use PrEP among MSM and (2) compare the PrEP perceptions among BMSM versus non-Black MSM. Data were drawn from two cross-sectional behavioral surveys in Baltimore, MD: Behavioral Surveil

The Effect of the Shikamana Peer-and-Provider Intervention on Depressive Symptoms, Alcohol Use, and Other Drug Use Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Kenya.

Kenyan gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) face stigma and discrimination, which may adversely impact mental health and limit antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence among GBMSM living with HIV. We evaluated whether the Shikamana peer-and-provider intervention, which improved ART adherence among participants in a small randomized trial, was associated with changes in mental health or substance use. The intervention was associated with a significant decrease in PHQ-9 score between baseline and month 6 (estimated change - 2.7, 95% CI - 5.2 to - 0.2, p = 0.037) compared to s

Spiraling Risk: Visualizing the multilevel factors that socially pattern HIV risk among gay, bisexual & other men who have sex with men using Complex Systems Theory.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Global disparities in HIV infection, particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), indicate the importance of exploring the multi-level processes that shape HIV's spread. We used Complex Systems Theory and the PRISMA guidelines to conduct a systematic review of 63 global reviews to understand how HIV is socially patterned among GBMSM. The purpose was to conduct a thematic analysis of the reviews to (1) synthesize the multi-level risk factors of HIV risk, (2) categorize risk across the socioecological model, and (3) develop a conceptual model

"We must help them despite who they are…": healthcare providers' attitudes and perspectives on care for young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Nairobi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Compared to young heterosexual men, young gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (YMSM) face a disproportionate burden of sexual health conditions. This disparity is occasioned by factors such as criminalization and stigmatization of same-sex practices, YMSM's limited access to non-judgmental and non-discriminatory health services, and challenges associated with healthcare delivery. We explored the attitudes and perspectives of tertiary academic institution-based healthcare providers (HCPs) toward provision of services to YMSM in Nairobi, Kenya. METHODS: In September 20
