Hedgehog (Hh) proteins control many developmental events by inducing specific cell fates or regulating cell proliferation. The Patched1 (Ptc1) protein, a binding protein for Hh molecules, appears to oppose Hh signals by repressing transcription of genes that can be activated by Hh. Sonic hedgehog (Shh), one of the vertebrate homologs of Hh, controls patterning and growth of the limb but the early embryonic lethality of ptc1(-)(/)(-) mice obscures the roles of ptc1 in later stages of development. Histoplasmosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection. It is commonly seen in immunocompromised individuals from endemic areas. Adrenal glands are frequently involved in the disseminated disease. Here, we present the case of a retropositive patient with constitutional symptoms, where whole-body positron emission tomography/CT scan revealed intense 18F-fludeoxyglucose uptake in bulky adrenal glands, and subsequent positron emission tomography-guided biopsy helped in establishing the diagnosis of adrenal histoplasmosis.

The results of treatment of 37 patients, suffering esophageal rupture (ER), which had occurred due to foreign body perforation, thoracic and neck trauma consequences, iatrogenic damage, chemical burn perforation, and 12 patients with Boehrhaave syndrome, are presented. The complex of roentgenological methods was applied for the ER investigation. Surgical methods and operative accesses, depending on the esophageal damage level, are depicted. The esophageal lower third rupture constitutes the most prognostically unfavorable one.

Wilms tumor commonly presents as an asymptomatic abdominal mass. In some cases, it can be accompanied with hypertension, constitutional symptoms, and hematuria when involving the collecting system. Below, we review the case of a child diagnosed with botryoid Wilms tumor involving the upper calyces and renal pelvis in which the presenting symptom was a concern for a foreign body in her left ear, and the only abnormality during initial history and physical examination was stage II hypertension.

Hypertrichosis lanuginosa developed in a patient with carcinoma of the bladder. After regional lymph node metastases became evident, soft, fine, blond hair developed on his entire body, with the exception of the soles and the palms. Extensive endocrinologic evaluation demonstrated depressed testosterone levels and elevated levels of leutinizing hormone, changes not thought to be related to the hair growth. To our knowledge, this patient constitutes the second reported case of this rare syndrome in association with bladder carcinoma.
