In this report, we present a case study involving an older, female patient with a history of pediatric traumatic brain injury (TBI). Magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging volumes were acquired from the volunteer in question, her brain volumetrics and morphometrics were extracted, and these were then systematically compared against corresponding metrics obtained from a large sample of older healthy control (HC) subjects as well as from subjects in various stages of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer disease (AD). Our analyses find the patient's brain morphometry and

Research has shown that maladaptive personality characteristics, such as Neuroticism, are associated with poor outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). The current exploratory study investigated the neural underpinnings of this process using dynamic functional network connectivity (dFNC) analyses of resting-state (rs) fMRI, and diffusion MRI (dMRI). Twenty-seven mTBI patients and 21 healthy controls (HC) were included. After measuring the Big Five personality dimensions, principal component analysis (PCA) was used to obtain a superordinate factor representing emotional instability, co

Compressive thorax injury is mostly observed in road traffic accidents which lead to multiple traumas. Eye findings after thoracic injury can be Purtscher's retinopathy, Valsalva retinopathy, and even blindness. We report a rare case of unilateral optic neuropathy associated with compressive chest injury. In our case, a 31-year-old construction worker developed irreversible optic nerve damage after ground collapsed on him and buried him up to his neck. There was no evidence of head trauma and blood loss, but multislice computed tomography showed diffuse brain edema caused by prolonged hypoxia

INTRODUCTION: Children with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) typically recover quickly, however approximately 15% experience persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) past 3 months. The microstructural pathology associated with underlying persistent symptoms is poorly understood but is suggested to involve axonal injury to white matter tracts. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can be used to visualize and characterize damage to white matter microstructure of the brain.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate white matter microstructure in children with persistent concussive symptoms as compared to

PURPOSE: Paroxysmal sympathetic hyperactivity (PSH) occurs in around 15-33% patients of traumatic brain injury. Due to presence of non-specific symptoms, it's always difficult to differentiate between paroxysmal sympathetic storm and cytokine storm syndrome and hence can delay specific treatment.
CASE REPORT: We report a clinical case of 19-year-old male tested COVID 19 positive with diffuse axonal injury presented with features of paroxysmal sympathetic storm and cytokine storm syndrome. The patient showed the signs clinical improvement when we treated both these conditions.
CONCLUSION: We

Many investigations on mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) aim to further understand how cells in the brain react to the mechanical forces associated with the injury. While it is known that rapid head rotation is a mechanism contributing to mTBI, establishing definitive thresholds for head rotation has proved challenging. One way to advance determining mechanisms and thresholds for injury is through in vitro models. Here, an apparatus has been designed that is capable of delivering rotational forces to three-dimensional (3D) hydrogel cell cultures. Using an in vitro model, we test the hypothesi

INTRODUCTION: Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HI-BI), a result of oxygen deprivation of the brain, is accompanied by memory impairment. In this study, we report on a patient with neural injury of the Papez circuit following HI-BI, demonstrated by diffusion tensor tractography (DTT).
CLINICAL FINDINGS/PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old male patient suffered spontaneous cardiopulmonary arrest and underwent cardiopulmonary resuscitation for approximately 20 minutes with the concomitant oxygen deprivation leading to HI-BI. The patient showed severe memory impairment at 10 weeks after onset: a Mini-Me

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in preterm infants at term-equivalent age demonstrated that apart from cystic periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), noncystic white matter injury may take place, detected as diffuse excessive high signal intensity (DEHSI) in the white matter on T2-weighted imaging. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain is conducted in few neonatal intensive care units. Consequently, the literature on the subject lacks descriptions of sequelae of noncystic white matter injury in premature newborns with very low birth weight (VLBW). We present the results of a three-

This study was aiming at investigating the extent of neuronal damage in cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI) with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) using 123I-iomazenil(IMZ) SPECT and MRI. We compared the findings in 31 patients with TBI without any major focal brain lesions and 25 age-matched normal controls. Subjects underwent 123I-IMZ SPECT and MRI, and also assessment by cognitive function tests. The partial volume effect of 123I-IMZ SPECT was corrected using MRI. In the patients with TBI, decreased spatial concentration of 123I-IMZ binding was detected in the medial frontal/orbitofrontal corte

In the traumatically injured spinal cord, decreased perfusion is believed to contribute to secondary tissue damage beyond the primary mechanical impact, and restoration of perfusion is believed to be a promising therapeutic target. However, methods to monitor spinal cord perfusion non-invasively are limited. Perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques established for the brain have not been routinely adopted to the spinal cord. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) and injury severity in a rat thoracic spinal cord contusion in

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain conditions are highly prevalent in patients with mild traumatic brain injury. Supraspinal diffuse axonal injury is known to dissociate brain functional connectivity in these patients. The effect of this dissociated state on supraspinal pain network is largely unknown. A functional magnetic resonance imaging study was conducted to compare the supraspinal pain network in patients with mild traumatic brain injury to the gender and age-matched healthy controls with the hypothesis that the functional connectivities of the medial prefrontal cortices, a supraspinal pain modul

The pathophysiology of traumatic axonal injury (TAI) is only partially understood. In this study, we investigated the inflammatory response as well as the extent of neurological deficit in a rat model of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Forty-two adult rats were subjected to moderate impact-acceleration brain injury and their brains were analyzed immunohistochemically for ICAM-1 expression and neutrophil infiltration from 1 hr up to 14 days after trauma. In addition, the chemotactic factors MIP-2 and MCP-1 were measured in brain homogenates by ELISA. For evaluating the neurological deficit, three

A 46-year-old male had 11-year history of cryptic autonomic dysfunction. He developed a fatal autonomic failure with diffuse hypoxic brain injury. Histology examination of medulla oblongata and the celiac ganglion revealed many α-synuclein immunoreactive Lewy bodies confirming the diagnosis of premanifesting Parkinson's disease (PD). PNS involvement in PD is underappreciated.

Brain gray matter (GM) and white matter alterations have been studied in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) patients. However, the differences in brain reorganization between complete SCI (CSCI) and incomplete SCI (ICSCI) remain unclear. The objective of the study was to explore the different effects of CSCI and ICSCI on brain structure in pediatric patients. A total of 68 children with SCI (37 with CSCI and 31 with ICSCI) and 36 age-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. The clinical data on motor and sensory scores, degree of injury, duration of injury, and age at the time of injury w

Mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to the pathology of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) brain damage by aberrant production of ROS. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) has been demonstrated to exert neuroprotective effects through antioxidant mechanisms. However, the diffusion of H2S in vivo is not specifically targeted and may even be systemically toxic. In this study, based on mitochondria-targeted H2S donor AP39, we fabricated liposomes encapsulating AP39 (AP39@Lip) via intranasal delivery to improve functional recovery after HI brain injury. This study presents that intranasal administration of AP39@Lip was ca

Eighteen term infants with hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) were studied with serial magnetic resonance imaging of the brain for up to two months following birth. Important early findings included brain swelling, cortical highlighting, diffuse loss of grey/white differentiation and loss of signal in the posterior limb of the internal capsule (PLIC). These signs were easier to identify on T1-weighted spin echo or inversion recovery sequences than on T2-weighted spin echo sequences. Brain swelling was only seen in the first seven days and was present in all grades of HIE. All other signs p

BACKGROUND & AIMS: There is debate over the presence and prevalence of brain injury in patients with celiac disease. To validate previous reports, we investigated the prevalence of neuropsychological dysfunction in persons with celiac disease included in the National UK Biobank, which contains experimental medical data from 500,000 adults in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: Biobank participants with celiac disease (n = 104; mean age, 63 years; 65% female) were matched with healthy individuals (controls, n = 198; mean age, 63 years; 67% female) for age, sex, level of education, body mass index, an

The relationship between spastic hemiplegia in diffuse axonal injury (DAI) and neuroradiological findings was studied in 100 cases. These cases were prospectively collected from the files of Automobile Insurance Rating Organization in Japan between 1993 from to 1996. Requirements for entry to this study were as follows: presence of initial unconsciousness after head injury without any lucid interval. Existence of CT scan or MRI film obtained within 12 hours of injury showing no significant mass effects, as well as follow-up CT scan or MRI film obtained more than 3 months after the injury. Psyc
