A key aspect to optimise the Tenebrio molitor (TM) farm productivity is to find an optimal breeding density for adults. To this purpose, this study investigated, from an industrial perspective, the impact of four breeding densities (D1, D2, D3 and D4, equal to 0.8, 1.1, 1.3 and 1.6 adults/cm2, respectively) on mortality and reproductive performances of TM adults and larvae. Two weeks after pupae emergence, TM adults were randomly assigned to the four groups and housed in 48 breeding crates (60 × 40 × 14.5 cm; 12 crates/group). The trial consisted of 4 consecutive weeks of adult breeding (each …

IN BRIEF: In some instances, extra-species breeding in equids is more successful than intraspecies breeding; however, little is known about the immunomodulatory effect of donkey semen and seminal plasma on the mare's endometrium. This study compared the mare uterine inflammatory response during extra- and intraspecies breeding.
ABSTRACT: Anecdotal experience suggests horse mares have less post-breeding inflammation and better fertility when bred with donkeys. This study aimed to compare the post-breeding inflammatory response of mares exposed to donkey and horse semen and seminal plasma and e…

Disorders of sexual development (DSDs) in dogs, similar to humans, arise from genetic mutations, gonadal differentiation, or phenotypic sex development. The French Bulldog, a breed that has seen a surge in popularity and demand, has also shown a marked increase in DSD incidence. This study aims to characterize the genetic underpinnings of DSDs in a French Bulldog named Brutus, exhibiting ambiguous genitalia and internal sexual anatomy, and to explore the impact of breeding practices on genetic diversity within the breed. We utilized a comprehensive approach combining conventional cytogenetics,…

Breeding programs in ornamentals can be facilitated by integrating knowledge of phylogenetic relatedness of potential parents along with other genomic information. Using AFLP, genetic distances were determined for 59 Geranium genotypes, comprising 55 commercial cultivars of the three subgenera of a total collection of 61 Geranium genotypes. A subgroup of 45 genotypes, including intragroup and intergroup hybrids, were selected and further characterized for genome sizes and chromosome numbers. The variation in genome size ranged from 1.51 ± 0.01 pg/2C to 12.94 ± 0.07 pg/2C. The chromosome number…

Post-breeding endometritis (i.e., inflammation/infection of the endometrium), is a physiological reaction taking place in the endometrium of mares within 48 hours post-breeding, aimed to clear seminal plasma, excess sperm, microorganisms, and debris from the uterine lumen in preparation for the arrival of an embryo. Mares are classified as susceptible or resistant to persistent breeding-induced endometritis (PBIE) based on their ability to clear this inflammation/infection by 48 hours post-breeding. Mares susceptible to PBIE, or those with difficulty clearing infection/inflammation, have a def…

Despite the importance of Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes in the transmission of yellow fever virus (YFV) and the public health impacts of recent YFV epidemics in the Americas, relatively little has been reported on the biology and ecology of these vectors. Many Aedes, Haemagogus and Sabethes spp. in the American tropics inhabit and develop in the forest canopy and are difficult to sample with conventional entomological surveillance methods. We tested the utility of two previously developed phytotelmata-style oviposition traps (bamboo Guadua angustifolia) and (monkey-pot Lecythis minor), for co

The epidemiology of leishmaniasis is related with habitat and behavior of the sand fly vector. Each species of sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) has a specific characteristic of their sites for the development of their immatures. Information on natural breeding sites of phlebotomine sand flies is limited, due to the difficulty of isolation of immature from the soil. This study, realized from May 2014 to September 2014, aimed to determine the effect of properties of soil on behavior and abundance of sand flies in breeding habitat in Aichoun locality. Sand flies were collected using sticky paper…

Smallholder dairy production represents a promising income generating activity for poor farmers in the developing world. Because of the perishable nature of milk, marketing arrangements for collection, distribution and sale are important for enhanced livelihoods in the smallholder dairy sector. In this study we examined the relationship between market quality and basic feeding and breeding practices at farm level. We define market quality as the attractiveness and reliability of procurement channels and associated input supply arrangements. We took as our study countries, India with its well-d…

Phlebotomine sand flies transmit Leishmania, phlebo-viruses and Bartonella to humans. A prominent gap in our knowledge of sand fly biology remains the ecology of their immature stages. Sand flies, unlike mosquitoes do not breed in water and only small numbers of larvae have been recovered from diverse habitats that provide stable temperatures, high humidity and decaying organic matter. We describe studies designed to identify and characterize sand fly breeding habitats in a Judean Desert focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis. To detect breeding habitats we constructed emergence traps comprising san…

The objective was to compare reproductive performance of breeding programs that used natural service (NS), AI after estrus detection (ED), and timed AI (TAI). In experiment 1, 597 suckled beef cows were randomly allocated to one of four groups. Cows in the TAI+NS group (N = 150) were bred by TAI at 11 days after the onset of the breeding season (BS). Bulls were placed with cows 10 days after TAI and remained together until the end of the 90-day BS. Cows in the TAI+ED+NS group (N = 148) received TAI, then AI based on ED for the next 45 days, and finally NS for the last 45 days of the BS. Cows i…

Paratuberculosis is a chronic bowel disease of ruminants caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP). Its secretion through semen highlights the importance of paratuberculosis-free breeding bulls. The breeding and teaser bulls at three semen production units (SPUs) located in Punjab, Pakistan, were screened for the presence of antibodies against MAP. A total of 253 samples were collected from SPUs and a commercially available indirect screen ELISA (Is-ELISA) was applied. Is-ELISA detected antibodies in 20 (24.6%), 16 (22.8%), and 17 (16.6%) samples from SPU-I, SPU-II, and SPU-I…

Urinary hormone analysis has proved accurate for identifying sex and breeding periods in dimorphic amphibians with known reproductive cycles. We examined whether these techniques could provide this much needed information for a monomorphic anuran with an unconfirmed mating season in the wild. We analysed urinary estrone conjugate, testosterone, and progesterone metabolites to infer the time of breeding and to identify sex in the endangered Maud Island frog, Leiopelma pakeka. Testosterone metabolites in males and estrone and progesterone metabolites in females were at their peak during winter f…
