AIM: To study influence of thymodepressin on the course of autoimmune cytopenia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thymodepressin is a new synthetic hemoregulatory dipeptide (gamma-D-Glu-D-Trp). It was used for the treatment of 22 patients with autoimmune cytopenia.
RESULTS: Hemoglobin levels were elevated in autoimmune hemolytic anemia and platelet levels were high in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. A thymodepressin course resulted in a fall of total lymphocyte count and activated CD3+CD69+ lymphocytes.

In humans, low-grade B-cell mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas of the stomach regress when Helicobacter pylori infection is cured by antimicrobial therapy. Using an animal model of human gastric MALT lymphoma, we observed the effects of Helicobacter felis eradication and the relationship between infection and disease progression. Antimicrobial therapy was given to one-half of the BALB/c mice infected with H. felis for 20 months. Groups of antibiotic-treated and untreated mice were killed 2, 3, and 4 months after antimicrobial therapy (ie, 22, 23, and 24 months after infection).

Two cases of mantle cell lymphoma with a unique CD8+ phenotype are reported. Both patients had disease that was resistant to therapy; one patient had the blastic variant of mantle cell lymphoma. Flow cytometric analysis of bone marrow and cerebrospinal fluid samples revealed a phenotype consistent with mantle cell lymphoma, with the additional finding of CD8 positivity in 40% or more of the tumor cells in both cases. The effects of rat anti-CD3 and anti-CD4 moAb, of the IgG2a as well as of the IgG2b subclass, on the development of lethal graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in a fully allogeneic mouse strain combination were compared in vivo. Immunological studies on scrub typhus (ST) have been limited mostly to animals despite the possible difference in the immune responses among the species of the hosts.
