Amphotericin B (AmB) is the most widely used antibiotic to treat systemic fungal infections. However, the molecular mechanism of its activity is still not completely understood. To determine whether there was a metabolic basis for recent reports that bulimic patients had low energy requirements for weight maintenance, energy expenditure measurements were made in 15 women with bulimia nervosa during abstinence from bingeing and vomiting. The binding of warfarin and oxyphenbutazone to albumin has been studied at pH 6.8 and pH 9.2 by measuring the heat of binding of these ligands to their high-affinity binding sites on albumin (delta Ho'1). The -delta Ho'1 values for the binding of warfarin at pH 6.8 and 9.2 and oxyphenbutazone at pH 6.8 and 9.2 were found to be 16.9(+/- 0.6), 28.8(+/- 0.6), 10.5(+/- 0.4) and 17.4(+/- 0.6) kJmol-1, respectively. Heat production (M) and heat loss (H) of ad lib fed rats and of rats fed for 2-hr daily for 2 months (2-hr fed rats) were simultaneously measured by direct and indirect calorimetry over a period of 48 hours. Local forced convective heat transfer distributions around the human head and a heated vertical cylinder at various wind speeds in a climatic chamber have been found to be similar and related to the aerodynamic flow patterns. 3. From the local convective coefficient distribution, values for the overall convective coefficient h-c at various wind speeds have been evaluated.
