Prevalence and Species Distribution of Neonatal Candidiasis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Candida infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) globally. We aimed to conduct a systematic review to investigate the prevalence of candida among causative organisms of neonatal sepsis and identify the distribution of candida species infecting Saudi neonates. METHODS: We comprehensively searched Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and Cochrane Library from their inception till November 2023. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, we ultimately included 21 eligible studies. The designs of the included studie

Pubic Candida Folliculitis, A Case Report in a Patient With Recurrent Vaginal Candidiasis.

OBJECTIVE: Folliculitis is a skin infection and inflammation that develops in the hair follicles. While most cases of folliculitis are caused by bacterial infections, here is a case of folliculitis caused by the Candida fungi in an immunocompetent host. CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old non-diabetic immunocompetent female with recurrent vaginal candidiasis developed clusters of erythematous, pruritic papules in the pubic area. Upon evaluation, the clusters were determined to be folliculitis. Risk factors for folliculitis included shaving of the pubic area, hot tub use, and wearing of tight, restrict…

Severe Esophageal Stricture Caused by Esophageal Candidiasis in a Non-HIV Patient.

Esophageal candidiasis (EC) is a common opportunistic infection in immunocompromised individuals, often encountered in situations such as untreated HIV/AIDS or following organ transplantation with immunosuppressant usage. While the main manifestation of esophageal candidiasis is mucosal inflammation, its progression and severe cases may lead to esophageal complications like dysphagia, odynophagia, and weight loss. One of the rare complications is esophageal stricture (ES). Few cases have been reported in the literature to date. Esophageal candidiasis can lead to the formation of ES through chr…

Isolated chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis due to a novel duplication variant of IL17RC.

PURPOSE: Inborn errors of the IL-17A/F-responsive pathway lead to chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis (CMC) as a predominant clinical phenotype, without other significant clinical manifestations apart from mucocutaneous staphylococcal diseases. Amongst inborn errors affecting IL-17-dependent immunity, autosomal recessive (AR) IL-17RC deficiency is a rare disease with only three kindreds described to date. The lack of an in vitro functional evaluation system of IL17RC variants renders its diagnosis difficult. We sought to characterize a seven-year-old Japanese girl with CMC carrying a novel homoz…

Screening for Ocular Candidiasis Among Patients With Candidemia: Is It Time to Change Practice?

Ocular candidiasis (OC) complicates approximately 10% of candidemia and carries potentially severe morbidity. There are conflicting recommendations about the need for routine funduscopic examinations of candidemic patients. Indirect funduscopy is accurate and safe in diagnosing OC, and positive findings change recommended treatment. However, conclusive evidence that treatment changes improve outcomes is lacking. Bringing perspectives as infectious diseases physicians and ophthalmologists, we review controversies about OC and endorse routine screening during candidemia. We acknowledge difficult…

Invasive Candidiasis: Update and Current Challenges in the Management of This Mycosis in South America.

Invasive candidiasis encompassing Candida bloodstream infections and deep-seated candidiasis can become a persistent health problem. These infections are caused by Candida species and have high morbidity and mortality rates. Species distribution, access to diagnosis, treatment and mortality are different around the world. The mortality rate is high in South America (30-70%), and Candida albicans is the most prevalent species in this region. However, a global epidemiological shift to non-albicans species has been observed. In this group, C. parapsilosis is the species most frequently detected, …

Stimuli-Responsive in situ Spray Gel of Miconazole Nitrate for Vaginal Candidiasis.

Vaginal candidiasis is a common form of infection in women caused by Candida species. Due to several drawbacks of conventional treatments, the current research is attempted to formulate and optimize a miconazole nitrate-loaded in situ spray gel for vaginal candidiasis. The stimuli-responsive (pH and thermo-responsive) polymers selected for the in situ gel were chitosan and poloxamer 407, respectively, whereas hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) was introduced in the formulation to further improve the mucoadhesive property. The dispersion of each polymer was carried out using the cold method, …

Invasive candidiasis: investigational drugs in the clinical development pipeline and mechanisms of action.

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of invasive Candida infections is evolving. Infections caused by non-albicans Candida spp. are increasing; however, the antifungal pipeline is more promising than ever and is enriched with repurposed drugs and agents that have new mechanisms of action. Despite progress, unmet needs in the treatment of invasive candidiasis remain, and there are still too few antifungals that can be administered orally or that have CNS penetration. AREAS COVERED: The authors shed light on those antifungal agents active against Candida that are in early- and late-stage clinical dev…

3D printed clotrimazole intravaginal ring for the treatment of recurrent vaginal candidiasis.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis is a vaginal infection caused by the fungal pathogen Candida albicans that, most commonly, affects women of reproductive age. Its first-line treatment consists in topical applications of conventional drug formulations (e.g., creams, gels, tablets) containing imidazole drugs. The treatment involves single or multiple daily applications and, in the case of recurrences, daily administration of oral antifungal drugs for up to one month. Intravaginal rings are flexible, biocompatible medical devices that, compared to conventional drug formulations, offer the possibility of …

A comparative study to assess risk of oral candidiasis in pregnant and nonpregnant women.

BACKGROUND: The major hormonal changes observed in pregnant women lead to an imbalance in the oral environment. Hence, recent studies suggest that the placenta may harbor a unique microbiome that may have originated in the maternal oral microbiome. AIM: The present study aimed to assess the risk factor of oral candidiasis in pregnancy and to evaluate the prevalence of Candida species in the oral cavity of pregnant women in all three trimesters. The comparison was also done between pregnant and nonpregnant women to evaluate the cause of the prevalence of candidal species. MATERIALS AND METHOD…
