FURTHER STUDIES ON THE OPHTHALMO-TUBERCULIN REACTION IN CATTLE.

Our conclusions differ in a few points from those of our first work on this subject. We are able to sum up our observations in this series of experiments as follows: 1. The ophthalmo-tuberculin test is of limited value in the diagnosis of tuberculosis in cattle. In some cases the reaction is very slight (hyperaemia). In others more pronounced congestion with profuse exudates are noted. Accuracy of observation is important. We are inclined to rely primarily on the results of the first instillation of tuberculin. Second instillations in a few instances elicit reaction in non-tubercular animals. …

Multivariate phenotyping reveals thermoregulatory patterns in crossbred cattle.

Improving the adaptation of beef cattle production to climate change requires crossbreeding strategies that enhance the ability of animals to maintain thermal stability under hot conditions. The objective of this exploratory study was to assess how coat characteristics are associated with rectal-temperature variation and to identify thermoregulatory patterns in Red Angus × Nelore crossbred cattle raised under tropical conditions. Thirty clinically healthy crossbred bulls from two genetic compositions (½ Red Angus × ½ Nelore and ¾ Red Angus × ¼ Nelore) were evaluated at 210 and 360 days of age.…

Pregnancy establishment in cattle without embryonic interferon tau.

In ruminants, embryonic interferon tau (IFNT) is widely considered the indispensable signal for maternal recognition of pregnancy, driving endometrial gene expression to prevent luteolysis. However, this canonical paradigm has never been directly tested using genomic loss-of-function models. Here we show that IFNT is completely dispensable for pregnancy recognition, luteal maintenance, and full-term gestation in cattle. Using CRISPR-Cas9, we generate bovine fibroblasts lacking all functional copies of the multigene IFNT locus for somatic cell nuclear transfer. IFNT-null embryos develop into bl…

Mannheimia haemolytica strain-level diversity in cattle populations.

High-resolution genomic characterization is essential for understanding diversity, pathogenicity, and transmission dynamics of bacterial pathogens. Mannheimia haemolytica (Mh) is the most consequential bacterial agent associated with bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in cattle, as a leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and antimicrobial use. Historically, BRD pathogens, including Mh, have been studied using culture or PCR approaches that provided limited ability to characterize fine-scale genomic variation across communities. Here, we evaluated target-enriched (TE) shotgun sequencing, a cultu…

Two bovine hepacivirus genome sequences from U.S. cattle.

Bovine hepacivirus (BoHV) is closely related to the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in humans and can cause both acute and chronic liver infections in cattle. BoHV was first identified in Ghana and Germany in 2015 and since then it has been detected and characterized in other countries around the world, but no strains have been sequenced from U.S. cattle. To date, BoHV has been classified into 2 genotypes (1 and 2), with genotype 1 being further divided into 11 subtypes (A-K). However, the true genetic diversity of BoHV is likely underestimated given limited surveillance and a lack of published genome…

Minimal Erythema Dose Determination in Holstein Friesian Cattle.

Cattle on pasture are continuously exposed to solar UV radiation, which has been associated with biological effects such as sunburn, photosensitization, squamous cell carcinoma, and cutaneous vitamin D3 production. The minimal erythema dose (MED) required to produce first-degree sunburn (erythema) is poorly researched in cattle. Since cattle are naturally covered with dense hair coats, the MED is influenced by the UV protection offered by the hair. The objective of this study was to determine the MED on intact-hair-covered (MED-H) and shaved white skin (MED-S) of Holstein Friesian cattle. Twen…

Vertebral heart size in healthy Australian cattle dog.

The vertebral heart score or size (VHS) measurement is routinely used to provide a more objective measurement of cardiomegaly in dogs. However, breed or body conformation can influence the VHS. To assess the specific VHS for the Australian Cattle Dog, left-to-right lateral, right-to-left lateral, dorsoventral and ventrodorsal thoracic radiographs from 20 individuals free from cardiac and pulmonary disease were obtained. The mean VHS was significantly higher in Australian Cattle Dog (10.5 ± 0.4 vertebrae), when compared with the average VHS for 100 normal dogs of different breeds that had been …

Cattle infection response network and its functional modules.

BACKGROUND: Weighted Gene Co-expression Network analysis, a powerful technique used to extract co-expressed gene pattern from mRNA expression data, was constructed to infer common immune strategies used by cattle in response to five different bacterial species (Escherichia coli, Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium bovis, Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus) and a protozoa (Trypanosoma Congolense) using 604 publicly available gene expression microarrays from 12 cattle infection experiments. RESULTS: A total of 14,999 transcripts that were differentially expressed (DE) in at least three differe…

Vaccination of cattle against bovine viral diarrhea virus.

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is responsible for significant losses to the cattle industry. Currently, modified-live viral (MLV) and inactivated viral vaccines are available against BVDV, often in combination with other viral and bacterial antigens. Inactivated and MLV vaccines provide cattle producers and veterinarians safe and efficacious options for herd immunization to limit disease associated with BVDV infection. Vaccination of young cattle against BVDV is motivated by prevention of clinical disease and limiting viral spread to susceptible animals. For reproductive-age cattle, vaccin…

Nematophagous fungi from decomposing cattle faeces in Argentina.

BACKGROUND: Biological control of gastrointestinal nematodes of ruminants by use of nematophagous fungi would become part of any livestock parasite integral control system. Identifying autochthonous species that could then be selected for mass production is an important phase in the practical use of biological control. AIMS: To search for nematophagous fungi with potential use as biological control agents against gastrointestinal nematodes in Argentina. METHODS: Decomposing cattle faeces sampled in different locations were incubated in water agar 2% with Panagrellus sp. The developed nematop…

Oxyntomodulin attenuates exendin-4-induced hypoglycemia in cattle.

Oxyntomodulin (OXM), glucagon, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), and exendin-4 (Ex-4) are peptide hormones that regulate glucose homeostasis in monogastric and ruminant animals. Recently, we reported that the insulin-releasing effects of OXM and glucagon in cattle are mediated through both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors. The purpose of this study was to examine the mechanisms of the glucoregulatory actions induced by Ex-4, GLP-1, OXM, and glucagon and the interrelationships among these hormones in cattle. Two experiments were performed in Holstein cattle. In Experiment 1, we initially assessed th…

Postpartum ovarian activity in South Asian zebu cattle.

Timely onset of postpartum ovarian activity is vital for optimal reproductive performance of dairy cows. Much depends upon genetic constitution of an animal although several factors interplay to govern the onset of postpartum ovarian activity. South Asian zebu cattle have much longer service period when compared with other exotic or crossbred cattle reared in the same Asian environment, which suggests differences in their genetic makeup. However, the cows with same genetic configuration expressed better reproductive potential when reared under different environment, such as in Brazil and Mexic…
