Bioinformatics Analysis Highlights Five Differentially Expressed Genes as Prognostic Biomarkers of Cervical Cancer and Novel Option for Anticancer Treatment.

Cervical cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies and is related to human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, especially high-risk type HPV16 and HPV18. Aberrantly expressed genes are involved in the development of cervical cancer, which set a genetic basis for patient prognosis. In this study, we identified a set of aberrantly expressed key genes from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database, which could be used to accurately predict the survival rate of patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma (CESC). A total of 3,570 genes that are differentially expressed between normal

Atlanto-axial arthrodesis by the wedge compression method.

Fifteen patients with atlanto-axial instability (secondary to os odontoideum in three, nonunion of an odontoid fracture in seven, acute odontoid fracture in three, and rheumatoid arthirtis in two) were treated by wedge compression arthrodesis of the atlanto-axial joint. One patient died at home eight weeks after fusion with the cause of death never established. Of the two patients with rheumatoid arthritis (ankylosing spondylitis), one had a non-union and in the other the posterior arch of the atlas fractured and the fusion had to be extended up to the occiput and down to the third cervical ve

Navigation-assisted C1-ring osteosynthesis for an unstable atlas fracture: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Unstable C1 (atlas) fractures pose a substantial surgical challenge due to their proximity to critical neurovascular structures and the unique biomechanical role of the atlantoaxial complex. Disruption of the transverse atlantal ligament (TAL) destabilizes the C1 ring, and traditional fusion constructs sacrifice substantial cervical motion. C1-ring osteosynthesis with a rod and lateral mass screw construct offers a motion-preserving alternative, though screw placement can be technically demanding. In this report, we present the use of stereotactic navigation-assisted open reduction

Axial skeletal morphological studies on the helmeted Guinea fowl (Numida meleagridis).

This study on the morphological features of bones of the helmeted guinea fowl (Numidia meleagridis) specifically the axial skeleton was conducted for documentation and valuable information on differences when compared with other species of the same order. Ten (10) Helmeted guinea fowls (5 females and 5 males) with an average weight of 3.0 kg were euthanized via jugular vein severance with bone preparation achieved via the use of insect larvae. The skull presented an elongated structure made up of paired and unpaired flat, short and long bones with distinctive features. The frontal bone project

Tumors at the lateral portion of the C1-2 interlaminar space compressing the spinal cord by rotation of the atlantoaxial joint: new aspects of spinal cord compression.

The authors describe 2 patients with C-2 nerve root tumors in whom the lesions were located bilaterally in the lateral portions of the C1-2 interlaminar space and compressed the spinal cord when the atlantoaxial joint was rotated. The patients were adult men with neurofibromatosis. Each presented with clumsiness of both hands and motor weakness of the extremities accompanied by spastic gait. Magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical spine performed with the neck in the neutral position showed tumors at the bilateral lateral portion of the C1-2 interlaminar space without direct compression of

Spatiotemporally deciphering the mysterious mechanism of persistent HPV-induced malignant transition and immune remodelling from HPV-infected normal cervix, precancer to cervical cancer: Integrating single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial transcriptome.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism underlying cervical carcinogenesis that is mediated by persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains elusive. AIMS: Here, for the first time, we deciphered both the temporal transition and spatial distribution of cellular subsets during disease progression from normal cervix tissues to precursor lesions to cervical cancer. MATERIALS & METHODS: We generated scRNA-seq profiles and spatial transcriptomics data from nine patient samples, including two HPV-negative normal, two HPV-positive normal, two HPV-positive HSIL and three HPV-positive cancer samples. Head-first impact with head protrusion causes noncontiguous injuries of the cadaveric cervical spine.

OBJECTIVE: To simulate horizontally aligned head-first impacts with initial head protrusion using a human cadaveric neck model and to determine biomechanical responses, injuries, and injury severity. DESIGN: Head-first impacts with initial head protrusion were simulated at 2.4 m/s using a human cadaver neck model (n = 10) mounted horizontally to a torso-equivalent mass on a sled and carrying a surrogate head. Macroscopic neck injuries were determined, and ligamentous injuries were quantified using fluoroscopy and visual inspection after the impacts. Representative time-history responses for i

Extraoral anatomy in CBCT – a literature review. Part 4: Pharyngocervical region.

This review about extraoral anatomy depicted in cone beam computed tomography describes the pharyngocervical region. Large (≥ 8 × 8 cm) field of views of the maxilla and/or mandible will inevita-bly depict the pharyngocervical region that com-prises the posterior upper airway, the pharyngeal part of the digestive tract, as well as the cervical segment of the spine. The latter consists of seven cervical vertebrae (C1-C7) with corresponding distinctive features, i.e., the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). In addition, cervical vertebrae serve as ref-erences for the vertical position of anatomical st

Narrow axis: an inherited anomaly of the second cervical vertebra in the rabbit.

Narrow axis, an inherited anomaly resulting in a marked narrowing of the second cervical vertebra, has been observed in strain X/J rabbits. This condition is first recognizable on X rays at 32-33 days gestation. For size comparisons 21 measurements of the first five cervical vertebrae were taken on the skeletons of each of 14 strain X/J animals (7 normal and 7 with narrow axis) and 14 IIIC/J animals for control at two months of age and 27 strain X/J (11 normal and 16 narrow axis) and 14 strain IIIC/J at seven months of age. The primary effect appeared to be a premature fusion of the centrum wi

Spectrum of imaging findings in hyperextension injuries of the neck.

Nonphysiologic hyperextension and lateral forces acting on the cervical spine and soft-tissue structures of the neck can result in a wide spectrum of injury patterns. Multiple factors (eg, patient age; the underlying morphologic features of the cervical spine; the magnitude, vector, and maximal focus of the force) all influence the observed patterns and the severity of injury. A review of the 5-year trauma database in two trauma centers revealed various injury patterns that were frequently recognized in patients with clinical evidence or historical documentation of a predominant hyperextension

Enhancing cancer classification accuracy with a self-attention network using panel capture sequencing data.

Cancer classification is pivotal for precision oncology, yet traditional methods struggle with the molecular heterogeneity of tumors. Our study introduces a self-attention based Conv1D machine learning network designed for panel capture sequencing data, which is more commonly used in clinical settings. Combining clinical capture sequencing data and The Cancer Genome Atlas data, we achieved an overall classification accuracy of over 90%, with precision rates reaching 100% for cervical and gastric cancers. Additionally, recall rates were highest at 95.79% for gastric cancer and lowest at 77.46%

Injuries of the upper cervical spine-how can instability be identified?

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of instability of the injured upper cervical spine remains controversial, due to its complicated anatomical configuration and biomechanical property. Since identifying unstable injuries of the upper cervical spine is essential for immediate stabilizing therapy, this article reviews the current classification systems of upper cervical spine injuries and their statements towards instability. METHODS: A systematic review of literature concerning upper cervical spine injuries was performed on the PubMed database from inception to December 2019. An English literature searc

[Atloido-axoid surgery by a transoral approach].

The author has approached 18 atlanto-axial joints in 15 years by a transoral approach. Fourteen of the lesions were post traumatic, two congenital, one rheumatoid and one a tumour. It is concluded that the approach is a valuable one provided that there is adequate surgical technique, good antiseptic preparation, antibiotic therapy, provisional peroperative tracheostomy and special retractors. Use of adequate suture is also important. In some cases, magnification was needed. Medullary monitoring may also be helpful. The author estimates that the approach is more effective than extrabuccal techn

A three-gene radioresistance signature predicts tumor progression in cervical cancer.

BACKGROUND: As a primary curative treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer, radiotherapy is frequently undermined by radioresistant tumor cells that evade cell death and subsequently drive post-treatment tumor progression. This study aimed to identify candidate genes associated with radioresistance in cervical cancer and to explore their potential in predicting unfavorable outcomes among radioresistant patients, thereby providing a reference for future research. METHODS: We screened for co-expressed genes using transcriptomic data from radiation non-complete response (NCR) cervical canc

Myelopathy and Quadriparesis due to Spinal Cord Compression of C1 Laminar Osteochondroma.

The aim of this paper is to show that osteochondromas of the cervical vertebrae can cause myelopathy and neck pain. The reported etiology, diagnosis, treatment and differential diagnosis were reviewed. Osteochondromas may present as a solitary lesion with no genetic component or as multiple lesions as a part of a genetic disorder known as hereditary multiple exostosis. Osteochondromas of the spine are rarely encountered in clinical practice. These lesions are reported more commonly with neural compression in cases associated with hereditary multiple exostosis. The authors describe a unusual cli

Anatomical variations of the foramen transversarium of cervical vertebrae from the ancient population of Herculaneum (79 CE; Naples, Italy).

Variations in the number, size and shape of the foramina transversaria of cervical vertebrae can affect the anatomical course of vital blood vessels and nerves, with the risk for pathological conditions, like vertebrobasilar insufficiency. This can result in compression of the vertebral artery during neck movements, which is characterised by headache, migraine, difficulties in swallowing, problems with speech and sight, balance disturbances and hearing disorders, among others. The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence of the diverse anatomical variants of the foramen transversarium i
