The inoculated virus (H9N8) was recovered from most tested organs, including the trachea, lung, kidney, spleen, and caecal tonsil. This is the first report of an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza in chickens caused by AIV subtype H9N8.

The Cryptsosporidium isolate from chickens in Japan by Itakura et al. is not yet accurately identified because of several discrepancies in phenotypic features. We attempted to identify this isolate by analyzing the partial sequences of the 18S rRNA, COWP and HSP70 genes. We studied the possible role of melatonin deficiency in experimentally-induced scoliosis. A total of 90 chickens underwent pinealectomy on the third day after hatching: 30 were treated with serotonin, 30 with melatonin and 30 received no therapy (control group). Scoliosis developed in all the control group, in 22 of the serotonin group, and in only 6 of the melatonin group. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) isolates from beef carcasses, minced beef, and dressed chicken were assayed for production of enterotoxin A, B, C and D using reverse passive agglutination technique. The effect of beta carotene on disease protection and humoral immunity in chickens was investigated in comparison with the effect of other lipid-soluble antioxidant vitamins, vitamin E and A, which are both proven immunoenhancers and contributors to disease protection. Beta carotene alone was not as effective as either vitamin in protecting chickens from Escherichia coli infection, nor did it significantly enhance humoral immunity. In combination with vitamin E, however, beta carotene significantly increased disease protection and reduced hepatomegaly caused by E. coli infection.
