The influence of malocclusion, sucking habits and dental caries in the masticatory function of preschool children.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of malocclusion, nutritive and non-nutritive sucking habits and dental caries in the masticatory function of preschool children. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of 384 children aged 3-5 years. A single examiner calibrated for oral clinical examinations performed all the evaluations (kappa > 0.82). Presence of malocclusion was recorded using Foster and Hamilton criteria. The number of masticatory units and of posterior teeth cavitated by dental caries was also recorded. The parents answered a questionnaire in the form of

Trapped in a Maze: Arab Teachers in Israel Facing Child Sexual Abuse Among Their Pupils.

Cultural contexts are formative of and fundamental to how individuals understand, conceptualize, and act within a context of violence. Conceptually and methodologically, however, research from a culturally informed perspective on the experiences of teachers contending with the violence of child sexual abuse (CSA) in particular is broadly limited. As educators frequently confront cases of CSA in their everyday work, their ability to promote detection, disclosure intervention, and especially prevention gives them the potential to be agents of social change; however, while their responsibilities

Gradual decline in outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in paediatrics: A data warehouse-based 11-year cohort study.

AIM: To describe trends in antibiotic (AB) prescriptions in children in primary care over 11 years, using a large data warehouse. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study assessed outpatient AB prescriptions 2007-2017, using the Massachusetts Health Disparities Repository. The evolution of paediatric outpatient AB prescriptions was assessed using time-series analyses through annual per cent change (APC) for the population and for children with or without comorbid condition. RESULTS: About 25 000 children were followed in primary care with 31 248 AB prescriptions reported in the data warehouse.

Visual Attention to Dynamic Scenes of Ambiguous Provocation and Children's Aggressive Behavior.

Research on biases in attention related to children's aggression has yielded mixed results. Some research suggests that inattention to social cues and reliance on maladaptive social schemas underlie aggression. Other research suggests that maladaptive social schemas lead aggressive individuals to attend to nonhostile cues. The primary objective of this study was to test the proposition that aggression is related to delayed attention to cues followed by selective attention to nonhostile cues after the provocation has occurred. A second objective was to test whether these biases are associated w

Spillover effects on infant caregiving and domestic work during the poriborton clean cookstove trial.

Quality care during early childhood is essential for life-long health, well-being, and productivity. Recognizing the global importance of advancing early childhood development strategies, this study conducted in-depth, face-to-face interviews with women, their husbands, and mothers-in-law to explore perceived shifts in childcare roles among participants of Poriborton Trial, a randomized controlled trial of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cookstoves. These interviews aimed to capture diverse perspectives on evolving caregiving dynamics and explored mothers' perspectives. Qualitative data were sys

School-based social relationships and children's psychological health: Examining heterogeneity by relationship source and child gender.

School-based social relationships play a significant role in shaping children's psychological health. However, it is unclear whether relationships with peers and teachers have differential effects, and whether these effects vary by gender. Using data from 2,168 individuals (9,608 person-waves), aged 7-8 at baseline and followed across five waves of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS), this study examined the association between the quality of school-based social relationships and psychological health. Fixed effects models were used to account for unobserved individual-level conf

METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted from September 2022 to June 2023 in Qom, Iran. A total of 102 caregivers were recruited from specialized r

[Surrogacy: Perspectives, challenges, and bioethical, legal, and epigenetic implications in public health in Argentina].

INTRODUCTION: Surrogacy, understood as the act of carrying a pregnancy on behalf of another person, has expanded as an assisted reproductive technology. Its regulation varies widely: some countries permit it, while others prohibit it altogether. In Argentina, there is no specific legislation regulating surrogacy, leading to significant legal uncertainty. The objective of this work is to analyze the ethical, legal, clinical, and social aspects of surrogacy in Argentina, based on a literature review and the institutional experience of a private hospital in Buenos Aires City. Surgery and the first 8000 days of life: a review.

The first 8000 days of life, from birth to adulthood, encompasses critical phases that shape a child's health and development. While global health efforts have focused on the first 1000 days, the next 7000 days (ages 2-21) are equally vital, especially concerning the unmet burden of surgical conditions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Approximately 1.7 billion children globally lack access to essential surgical care, with LMICs accounting for 85% of these unmet needs. Common surgical conditions, including congenital anomalies, injuries, infections, and pediatric cancers, often go u

Callous-unemotional Traits and Child Response to Teacher Rewards, Discipline, and Instructional Methods in Chinese Preschools: A Classroom Observation Study.

Atypical responses to teacher rewards, discipline and different forms of instructional methods have been identified as potential contributors to disruptive behavior, low school engagement, and academic underachievement in children with elevated callous-unemotional (CU) traits. To date, research on CU traits in schools has relied on interview or questionnaire methods and has predominantly been conducted in Western countries. Thus, the present study aims to investigate the relationships between CU traits and children's responses to teacher rewards, discipline and instructional methods in the Chi

How parents of children with ataxia-telangiectasia use dynamic coping to navigate cyclical uncertainty.

Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare, childhood-onset, multi-systemic, progressive condition. Parents of children with rare diseases like A-T are emotionally, socially, and psychologically impacted by the diagnosis. To examine the parental perspective of having a child with A-T, and to better understand how parents cope with an A-T diagnosis, we conducted 10 semistructured interviews. Thematic analysis using a phenomenological approach resulted in five themes: (1) Parental responsibilities change as the result of an A-T diagnosis, (2) An A-T diagnosis brings about shifts in identity for all f
