We have received 147 patients with an antenatal diagnosis of uropathy confirmed after birth. Surgery during the first 3 months of life was necessary for 78 (54%) of them. The procedures included partial or total exeresis of the kidney in 9 cases, and reconstruction of the excretory pathway in 69 (88%). A prospective study was done on 64 patients presenting with features suggestive of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) at Harare Central Hospital from March 1988 to March 1989. Personality development after child abuse was studied in 39 children who had, on average, been admitted to hospital five and a half years previously. In contrast to a control group, the abused children had fewer friends, lower ambitions, and lower self esteem.
