Prediction of appropriate formula for nasotracheal tube size in developmental disability children.

OBJECTIVES: Developmental disability children have differences in growth. Therefore, tube size selection is important for nasotracheal intubation. In our previous study for healthy children undergoing dental surgery, height was the most suitable factor to predict nasotracheal tube size. The aim of this study was to find the most suitable formula for selection of nasotracheal tube size for them, retrospectively. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Developmental disability children aged 2 to 10 years were included in this study. They were intubated nasotracheally from April 2012 until May 2017. Their actuall

Parasitic Infections in Children with Disability in Resource Poor Settings: The Research Gaps.

The burden of parasitic infections among children with disability in resource-poor settings has not been summarised through a focused review. Here, we have summarised the key studies reporting the burden of parasitic infections among children without and with a disability. In most instances, among children without disability, Giardia or soil-transmitted helminths dominate the epidemiology, while among disabled individuals, enteric protozoa are the predominant parasites to be reported in both resource-rich and resource-poor countries. Cryptosporidium is generally the leading protozoan to be det

Strabismus in Children With Intellectual Disability: Part of a Broader Motor Control Phenotype?

PURPOSE: Intellectual disability (ID) results from a heterogeneous group of disorders and affects 1% to 2% of children. ID frequently occurs in association with other clinical features such as seizures or malformations. We suspected that strabismus might also be unusually frequent in this population and that it might be associated with ID groups affecting motor control. METHODS: We reviewed phenotypic descriptors, extracted from medical records, for a heterogeneous series of 222 probands with ID who had been enrolled in a study of clinical application of exome sequencing. We estimated the fre

Sexual abuse involving children with an intellectual disability (ID): a narrative review.

The current paper provides a narrative review of the literature on sexual abuse, involving children with Intellectual Disability (ID). The thirteen articles that were found and met our criteria vary in their definitions of sexual abuse and in how ID was determined. Still, they do paint a general picture concerning (1) the extent of sexual abuse, (2) the nature of the sexual abuse, and (3) the institutional reactions following sexual abuse of children with ID. Our findings confirm the greater vulnerability of children with ID to become involved in sexual abuse both as a victim and as a perpetra

Contrasting deficits on executive functions between ADHD and reading disabled children.

BACKGROUND: The object of this study was to analyze the executive functioning of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or reading disability (RD) independent of their non-executive deficits. METHODS: Three carefully diagnosed groups of children, aged between 7 and 12 years (35 ADHD, 22 RD and 30 typically developing children), were tested on a wide range of tasks related to five major domains of executive functioning (EF): inhibition, visual working memory, planning, cognitive flexibility, and verbal fluency. Additional tasks were selected for each domain to control fo

[Effects of tizanidine for refractory sleep disturbance in disabled children with spastic quadriplegia].

Tizanidine is a centrally acting alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist widely used in the treatment of spasticity in patients with cerebral or spinal injury, and it is causing drawsiness in some of them. Based on these drug actions, we administered tizanidine to 21 spastic quadriplegic children with severe sleep disturbance not improved by conventional therapies. All these patients were showing abnormalities of both the induction and maintenance of sleep. The dosage of tizanidine was 0.1 to 0.2 mg/kg/day, divided into two or three doses. If daytime drowsiness was severe, tizanidine admistration was r

EEG and behavioral changes following neurofeedback treatment in learning disabled children.

Neurofeedback (NFB) is an operant conditioning procedure, by which the subject learns to control his/her EEG activity. On one hand, Learning Disabled (LD) children have higher values of theta EEG absolute and relative power than normal children, and on the other hand, it has been shown that minimum alpha absolute power is necessary for adequate performance. Ten LD children were selected with higher than normal ratios of theta to alpha absolute power (theta/alpha). The Test Of Variables of Attention (TOVA) was applied. Children were divided into two groups in order to maintain similar IQ values

Factors affecting the risk of behaviour problems in children with severe intellectual disability.

In order to examine the importance of a range of potential risk factors for behaviour problems in children with severe intellectual disability, a sample was identified by the administration of a screening version of the Vineland Adaptive Behaviour Scales (VABS) to the parents of children aged 4-11 years attending six special needs schools in three adjacent inner London boroughs. Parents whose children had a VABS standard score of < or = 50 were interviewed using the Disability Assessment Schedule and both parents and teachers completed the Aberrant Behaviour Checklist. Most behaviour problems
