MicroRNA, Myostatin, and Metabolic Rate Depression: Skeletal Muscle Atrophy Resistance in Hibernating Myotis lucifugus.

Little brown bats (Myotis lucifugus) cluster in hibernacula sites over winter, in which they use metabolic rate depression (MRD) to facilitate entrance and exit of hibernation. This study used small RNA sequencing and bioinformatic analyses to identify differentially regulated microRNAs (miRNAs) and to predict their downstream effects on Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) terms in the skeletal muscle of torpid M. lucifugus as compared to euthermic controls. We observed a subset of ten miRNAs whose expression changed during hibernation, with predicted function

Reemergence of a Big Brown Bat Lyssavirus rabies Variant in Striped Skunks in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA, 2021-2023.

Background: Throughout the Americas, Lyssavirus rabies (RV) perpetuates as multiple variants among bat and mesocarnivore species. Interspecific RV spillover occurs on occasion, but clusters and viral host shifts are rare. The spillover and host shift of a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) RV variant Ef-W1 into mesocarnivores was reported previously on several occasions during 2001-2009 in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA, and controlled through rabies vaccination of target wildlife. During autumn 2021, a new cluster of Ef-W1 RV cases infecting striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) was detected from United

Bat Rabies in the Americas: Is Myotis the Main Ancestral Spreader?

The rabies virus (RABV) is the exclusive lyssavirus affecting both wild and domestic mammalian hosts in the Americas, including humans. Additionally, the Americas stand out as the sole region where bat rabies occurs. While carnivore rabies is being increasingly managed across the region, bats are emerging as significant reservoirs of RABV infection for humans and domestic animals. Knowledge of the bat species maintaining rabies and comprehending cross-species transmission (CST) and host shift processes are pivotal for directing surveillance as well as ecological research involving wildlife res

Molecular survey of hemoplasmas and Coxiella burnetii in vampire bats from northern Brazil.

In addition to zoonotic viral pathogens, bats can also harbor bacterial pathogens, including hemoplasmas (hemotropic mycoplasmas) and Coxiella burnetii. The present study aimed to investigate, using molecular techniques, the presence of hemoplasmas and C. burnetii in spleen samples from vampire bats in northern Brazil. For this purpose, between 2017 and 2019, spleen samples were collected from Desmodus rotundus (n = 228) and Diaemus youngii (n = 1) captured in the states of Pará (n = 207), Amazonas (n = 1), Roraima (n = 18) and Amapá (n = 3). DNA samples extracted from the bat spleen and posit

Molecular detection and characterization of Bartonella spp. in small mammals in the Amazonia and Cerrado biomes, midwestern Brazil.

Although Bartonella spp. have been worldwide described in rodents and bats, few studies have reported these agents in marsupials. The present work aimed to investigate the occurrence and genetic diversity of Bartonella in small mammals (rodents, marsupials, and bats) and associated ectoparasites in two ecoregions (Amazonia and Cerrado biomes) in midwestern Brazil. For this purpose, DNA samples from 378 specimens of small mammals (128 rodents, 111 marsupials, and 139 bats) and 41 fleas (Siphonaptera) were screened for the Bartonella genus employing a quantitative real-time PCR assay (qPCR) base

Pangolin HKU4-related coronaviruses found in greater bamboo bats from southern China.

Coronavirus (CoV) spillover originating from game animals, particularly pangolins, is currently a significant concern. Meanwhile, vigilance is urgently needed for coronaviruses carried by bats, which are known as natural reservoirs of many coronaviruses. In this study, we collected 729 anal swabs of 20 different bat species from nine locations in Yunnan and Guangdong provinces, southern China, in 2016 and 2017, and described the molecular characteristics and genetic diversity of alphacoronaviruses (αCoVs) and betacoronaviruses (βCoVs) found in these bats. Using RT-PCR, we identified 58 (8.0%)

Marburg Virus- A Threat During SARS-CoV-2 Era: A Review.

In the German towns of Marburg, Frankfurt, and Belgrade in 1967, this single negativestranded RNA virus was initially discovered. The importation of infected grivet monkeys from Uganda is what caused this virus-related sickness. As a result of the early link between viruses and non-human primates, this virus is frequently referred to as vervet monkey sickness. This virus causes Marburg hemorrhagic fever in humans and non-human primates. Human endothelial cells serve as the primary vehicle for replication. According to a 2009 report, the virus was being stored in Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus

Molecular detection of Babesia vesperuginis in bats from Lithuania.

Babesia vesperuginis is an intraerythrocytic protozoan parasite that circulates among bats and ticks in many countries worldwide. However, the distribution of B. vesperuginis in the Baltic region has not been studied. A total of 86 dead bats from eight different species were collected and screened for Babesia spp. using real-time PCR. Overall, 52.3% (45/86) of the bats were found positive for Babesia spp. The prevalence of Babesia spp. in different organs varied, with the highest prevalence observed in heart tissues (37.0%) and the lowest in liver tissues (22.2%). However, the observed differe

Defining County-Level Terrestrial Rabies Freedom Using the US National Rabies Surveillance System: Surveillance Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a deadly zoonotic disease with nearly 100% fatality rate. In the United States, rabies virus persists in wildlife reservoirs, with occasional spillover into humans and domestic animals. The distribution of reservoir hosts in US counties plays an important role in public health decision-making, including the recommendation of lifesaving postexposure prophylaxis upon suspected rabies exposures. Furthermore, in surveillance data, it is difficult to discern whether counties have no cases reported because rabies was not present or because counties have an unreported rabies pre

Gut microbial shifts in vampire bats linked to immunity due to changed diet in human disturbed landscapes.

Anthropogenic land-use change alters wildlife habitats and modifies species composition, diversity, and contacts among wildlife, livestock, and humans. Such human-modified ecosystems have been associated with emerging infectious diseases, threatening human and animal health. However, human disturbance also creates new resources that some species can exploit. Common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in Latin America constitute an important example, as their adaptation to human-modified habitats and livestock blood-feeding has implications for e.g., rabies transmission. Despite the well-known lin

Toxicokinetic analysis of the anticoagulant rodenticides warfarin & diphacinone in Egyptian fruit bats (Rousettus aegyptiacus) as a comparative sensitivity assessment for Bonin fruit bats (Pteropus pselaphon).

Anticoagulant rodenticides have been widely used to eliminate wild rodents, which as invasive species on remote islands can disturb ecosystems. Since rodenticides can cause wildlife poisoning, it is necessary to evaluate the sensitivity of local mammals and birds to the poisons to ensure the rodenticides are used effectively. The Bonin Islands are an archipelago located 1000 km southeast of the Japanese mainland and are famous for the unique ecosystems. Here the first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide diphacinone has been used against introduced black rats (Rattus rattus). The only land mam

Characterization of Pipistrellus pygmaeus Bat Virome from Sweden.

Increasing amounts of data indicate that bats harbor a higher viral diversity relative to other mammalian orders, and they have been recognized as potential reservoirs for pathogenic viruses, such as the Hendra, Nipah, Marburg, and SARS-CoV viruses. Here, we present the first viral metagenomic analysis of Pipistrellus pygmaeus from Uppsala, Sweden. Total RNA was extracted from the saliva and feces of individual bats and analyzed using Illumina sequencing. The results identified sequences related to 51 different viral families, including vertebrate, invertebrate, and plant viruses. These viral

A recombinant rabies vaccine that prevents viral shedding in rabid common vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus).

Vampire bat transmitted rabies (VBR) is a continuing burden to public health and agricultural sectors in Latin America, despite decades-long efforts to control the disease by culling bat populations. Culling has been shown to disperse bats, leading to an increased spread of rabies. Thus, non-lethal strategies to control VBR, such as vaccination, are desired. Here, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of a viral-vectored recombinant mosaic glycoprotein rabies vaccine candidate (RCN-MoG) in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) of unknown history of rabies exposure captured in México and transported

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis serotype O:1 infection in a captive Seba's short tailed-fruit bat (Carollia perspicillata) colony in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Between February and April 2016, a slight increase in mortality was observed in a colony consisting of 400 captive Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata). These animals cohabited with other nocturnal animal species in a dome of a private zoo in Switzerland. RESULTS: Gross and histological analysis of two (14.3%) out of the 13 animals submitted for necropsy within this period revealed a necrosuppurative pneumonia, hepatitis, splenitis, enterocolitis, and endometritis, with abundant intralesional colonies of Gram-negative rods. Yersinia (Y.) pseudotuberculosis serotype O:

Tolerance and Persistence of Ebola Virus in Primary Cells from Mops condylurus, a Potential Ebola Virus Reservoir.

Although there have been documented Ebola virus disease outbreaks for more than 40 years, the natural reservoir host has not been identified. Recent studies provide evidence that the Angolan free-tailed bat (Mops condylurus), an insectivorous microbat, is a possible ebolavirus reservoir. To investigate the potential role of this bat species in the ecology of ebolaviruses, replication, tolerance, and persistence of Ebola virus (EBOV) were investigated in 10 different primary bat cell isolates from M. condylurus. Varying EBOV replication kinetics corresponded to the expression levels of the inte

The microbiome of bat guano: for what is this knowledge important?

Bats as flying mammals are potent vectors and natural reservoir hosts for many infectious viruses, bacteria, and fungi, also detected in their excreta such as guano. Accelerated deforestation, urbanization, and anthropization hastily lead to overpopulation of the bats in urban areas allowing easy interaction with other animals, expansion, and emergence of new zoonotic disease outbreaks potentially harmful to humans. Therefore, getting new insights in the microbiome of bat guano from different places represents an imperative for the future. Furthermore, the use of novel high-throughput sequenci

Comparative genomic signature representations of the emerging COVID-19 coronavirus and other coronaviruses: High identity and possible recombination between Bat and Pangolin coronaviruses.

Coronaviruses are responsible on respiratory diseases in animal and human. The combination of numerical encoding techniques and digital signal processing methods are becoming increasingly important in handling large genomic data. In this paper, we propose to analyze the SARS-CoV-2 genomic signature using the combination of different nucleotide representations and signal processing tools in the aim to identify its genetic origin. The sequence of SARS-CoV-2 was compared with 21 relevant sequences including Bat, Yak and Pangolin coronavirus sequences. In addition, we developed a new algorithm to

Recombination in the rabies virus and other lyssaviruses.

Recombination is a common event in RNA viruses; however, in the rabies virus there have been only a few reports of isolated recombination events. Comprehensive analysis found traces of recent recombination events within Arctic, Arctic-like and Africa 1b rabies virus groups, as well as recombination between distinct lyssaviruses. Recombination breakpoints were not linked to gene boundaries and could be detected all over the genome. However, there was no evidence that recombination is an important factor in the genetic variability of the rabies virus. It is therefore likely that recombination in
