Human lymph was collected from patients with leaking lymph vessels after thoracic surgery. Ovine lymph was obtained from the mesenteric, lumbar, popliteal and prescapular lymph ducts by cannulation. The concentration of hyaluronate varied considerably (between 0.2 and 50 mg/l) and the highest concentrations were found in mesenteric lymph. The Mr of the polysaccharide showed a great polydispersity and variation between individuals and in different regions of the lymphatic system. A case of atypical pituitary dependent Cushing's disease is reported. The patient presented with clinical symptoms similar to those of the ectopic ACTH syndrome; notably a marked hypokalaemic alkalosis, widely fluctuating plasma cortisol levels, greatly elevated plasma ACTH levels, and failure to suppress both plasma cortisol and ACTH levels following high dose oral dexamethasone. A 73-yr-old patient with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism was admitted to our hospital in May 1981. We have isolated and biochemically characterized superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in cell extracts of clonally cultured Perkinsus marinus, a facultative intracellular parasite of the Eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica.
