Environmental variability and the transmission of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Changsha, People's Republic of China.

The transmission of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is influenced by climatic, reservoir and environmental variables. The epidemiology of the disease was studied over a 6-year period in Changsha. Variables relating to climate, environment, rodent host distribution and disease occurrence were collected monthly and analysed using a time-series adjusted Poisson regression model. It was found that the density of the rodent host and multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation index had the greatest effect on the transmission of HFRS with lags of 2–6 months. However, a number of climatic

Climatic Variability and Milk Quality as Sustainability Indicators in Dairy Farming Systems of Pastaza Province, Ecuador.

Milk production in humid tropical regions depends heavily on environmental conditions, yet little is known about how climatic variability affects milk quality in small-scale dairy systems in the Ecuadorian Amazon. This study examined the link between climatic variability and the physicochemical and microbiological quality of raw milk on dairy farms in Pastaza Province, Ecuador. Researchers collected and analyzed 127 milk samples in 2024 for fat, protein, total solids, and solids-not-fat using an automated milk analyzer. They also measured somatic cell count and total bacterial count as microbi

Trade-off analysis between soil organic carbon and maize yield under no-tillage: implication for sustainable cropland management.

Long-term intensive tillage has reduced soil organic carbon (SOC) and threatened sustainable maize production in Northeast China. Yet how tillage regulates SOC-yield relationship across climatic gradients remains unclear, limiting climate-smart cropland management. Here, we combined field observations with the DSSAT model to simulate long-term effects of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) on SOC and maize yield (MY) across the maize belt of Jilin Province, and qualified SOC-MY synergy/trade-off along aridity gradients. NT consistently increased SOC region-wide and improve MY on aver

Beyond the runway - Quantifying the climate impact of international catering waste.

International flights generate substantial volumes of waste that pose a unique environmental challenge, as strict biosecurity regulations require it to be disposed of through destructive methods across the world. However, the impact on the world's climate of managing this waste remains unquantified and largely disregarded in aviation mitigation discussions. This study presents the first analysis of the contribution of cabin waste management to climate change, developing a novel methodology that combines passenger movement data with waste generation factors to quantify volumes, composition, and

Climate change, malaria and neglected tropical diseases: a scoping review.

To explore the effects of climate change on malaria and 20 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and potential effect amelioration through mitigation and adaptation, we searched for papers published from January 2010 to October 2023. We descriptively synthesised extracted data. We analysed numbers of papers meeting our inclusion criteria by country and national disease burden, healthcare access and quality index (HAQI), as well as by climate vulnerability score. From 42 693 retrieved records, 1543 full-text papers were assessed. Of 511 papers meeting the inclusion criteria, 185 studied malaria,

Meteorological and climatic variables predict the phenology of Ixodes ricinus nymph activity in France, accounting for habitat heterogeneity.

Ixodes ricinus ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) are the most important vector for Lyme borreliosis in Europe. As climate change might affect their distributions and activities, this study aimed to determine the effects of environmental factors, i.e., meteorological, bioclimatic, and habitat characteristics on host-seeking (questing) activity of I. ricinus nymphs, an important stage in disease transmissions, across diverse climatic types in France over 8 years. Questing activity was observed using a repeated removal sampling with a cloth-dragging technique in 11 sampling sites from 7 tick observatories

Potential effects of climate change on the risk of accidents with poisonous species of the genus Tityus (Scorpiones, Buthidae) in Argentina.

The temporal pattern of co-occurrence of human beings and venomous species (scorpions, spiders, snakes) is changing. Thus, the temporal pattern of areas with risk of accidents with such species tends to become dynamic in time. We analyze the areas of occurrence of species of Tityus in Argentina and assess the impact of global climate change on their area of distribution by the construction of risk maps. Using data of occurrence of the species and climatic variables, we constructed models of species distribution (SMDs) under current and future climatic conditions. We also created maps that allo

Whose perceptions matter more: mine or my group's? An actor-partner interdependence analysis disaggregating between-person and between-session effects of group climate perceptions on intimate behaviors.

Group climate refers to the atmosphere that is both created and experienced by a group of people. Theoretically, the "climate" of a group should therefore be related to the behaviors of its members during group sessions; however, this has not been empirically tested. A longitudinal design was used to examine the relationship between group member perceptions of engagement and conflict and group member intimate behaviors during the group session. Data came from 73 incarcerated women participating in 6 manualized (Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model) therapy groups. At each session, group membe

Public health consequences of global climate change. A narrative review.

Human activities related to the industrialization generated an overall rise of global temperatures with approximately 1 °C since 1880. These increases in temperatures have been accelerating since 1981, with the rate of temperature increase roughly doubling since the 1970s, the average warming rate being of approximately 0.18 °C to 0.20 °C per decade between 1970 to 2015. Even more alarmingly, recent studies indicate that this rate has accelerated to over 0.35 °C per decade since 2015, roughly the double of the previous period. The primarily contributor to the observed extensive climate change

Projecting the future spread of yellow fever vectors and implications for epidemic risk: a scoping review of climate change and human behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever is a vector-borne disease with high epidemic potential. Although currently concentrated in Africa and Latin America, both climate change and human behaviour are likely to affect its future spread and epidemic risk. However, how these factors might interact to alter yellow fever distribution remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This scoping review aimed to map the available literature at the intersection of these topics and compile the trends that may influence the future spread of yellow fever. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies were included if they reported original data on fut

Academic involution behavior, perceived academic involution climate, and English learning intention among college students: the indirect role of psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Academic involution may be experienced both as students' own excessive competitive behavior and as their perception that peers engage in such behavior. This study examined how academic involution behavior and perceived academic involution climate were concurrently associated with English learning intention, and whether psychological distress formed a negative statistical indirect association within the proposed model. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was completed by 1,683 students from nine universities in Chongqing, China. Academic involution behavior, perceived academic

Projected Impacts of Climate and Land Use/Land Cover Change on Sediment Yield and Surface Runoff in the Baro River Sub-Basin, Ethiopia.

Understanding how climate change and land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics influence watershed hydrological processes is essential for achieving sustainable water and land management, particularly in data-scarce and erosion-prone basins. This study assesses the individual and synergistic effects of CMIP6-based climate projections and LULC change on sediment yield and surface runoff in the Baro River sub-basin. Utilizing a comprehensive hydrological modeling framework, this study integrates the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) with CMIP6 multi-model ensemble climate projections under SSP2-4.

Post-establishment environmental suitability of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus in Iran under SSP-based climate scenarios.

Dengue fever is a major and expanding global health threat, exacerbated by climate change. The confirmed establishment of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in multiple Iranian provinces raises serious concerns about potential outbreaks of dengue and other arboviral diseases. From a One Health perspective, understanding how climatic and environmental conditions shape vector establishment is essential for strengthening integrated surveillance and prevention. This underscores the urgent need for evidence-based projections of vector distribution to guide surveillance and control. This

Climatic Influence on COVID-19: Investigating the Role of Temperature and Humidity in the Spread of the Omicron Variant.

Understanding how climate modulates infectious disease dynamics is critical for anticipating epidemic patterns. After a hot debate on potential facilitation of population spread by climate factors during the first 2 years of the COVID-19 pandemics, not much attention has been devoted to assess whether the ensuing SARS-CoV-2 waves also displayed similar climatic facilitation, or conversely, whether immunity dismissed any such forcing and potential signatures. This study examines the association between climatological variables-specifically temperature and absolute humidity (AH)-and the global i

Climatic suitability and spread potential of Anoplophora horsfieldii (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), a newly identified non-native insect on Jeju Island, Korea.

In 2022, the non-native longhorn beetle Anoplophora horsfieldii (Hope) was officially reported on Jeju Island, Korea, marking its first confirmed occurrence outside its native range. This insect damages living hackberry trees, a common species in Korea, posing a significant threat to tree health due to its high population levels on Jeju Island. This study aimed to estimate the climatic suitability and spread potential of A. horsfieldii to support its effective management in non-native regions, particularly on Jeju Island. We adopted a species distribution modeling (SDM) approach using global p

A comparative approach to analyzing and forecasting carbon dioxide emissions in ethiopia using Bayesian autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) and Bayesian structural time series (BSTS) models.

INTRODUCTION: Carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions are a major contributor to global climate change. In Ethiopia, CO₂ emissions have increased steadily in recent decades due to industrialization, rising energy consumption, expanding transportation systems, continued dependence on biomass fuels, and rapid population growth. Although Ethiopia has historically contributed only a small share to global greenhouse gas emissions, the recent upward trend poses challenges for sustainable development and environmental management. Accurate forecasting of CO₂ emissions is essential for designing effective clima

"Body farm time machine": Results from taphonomic study of burial and underwater contexts.

Experimental taphonomy and neotaphonomic monitoring have become two relevant tools in interpreting modifications, and most especially in forensic investigations. Research facilities, where human decomposition experiments are carried out under controlled situations, provide a better understanding of the tapho-forensic history of cadaveric remains under specific environments and in different situations or even climates. There are, however, limitations of time to monitoring, such as space for experimentation and ethics, that do not always allow to carry out these types of investigations. The stud
