Rationales for the Choice of Metals for Super-Reduced Biological Metal Centers: Cobalt in Cobalamin Versus Nickel in F430.

Reported here are DFT calculations on porphyrin, corrin, and corphin complexes with formally metal (I) states of cobalt, rhodium, iron, manganese, or nickel, complemented by QM/MM calculations on enzyme models, and exploring the available spin states, with the goal to understand factors controlling the availably of super-reduced metal(I) states on such biologically-relevant systems. In the porphyrin systems, the preferred spin states offer no clear case of metal(I) electronic description-but rather metal(II) coupled with porphyrin anion radicals; this is in line with the fact that porphyrin is…

Dissecting Reaction Paths with the Independent Gradient Model: The Case of a Key Reductive Elimination Step at Cobalt(IV).

The Independent Gradient Model (IGM) reveals interaction signatures by analyzing the electron density (ED) gradient. In this report it is used to analyze the variations of the electronic structure of a molecular system undergoing, along a series of highly sampled Intrinsic Reaction Coordinates (IRC), a concerted reductive elimination reaction staging a doublet ground state metallacyclic [Cp*{C,N}CoIV(X{Y})]+ (X{Y} = 1 electron ligand, {Y} = assisting atom) prereactive complex (RC). The IGM interfragment Δginter score and the degree of interaction (DOI(Co)) of the cobalt center reveal meaningfu…

Crystallization of Carbonates with a Core-Shell Structure: Insights into Cobalt-Iron Separation for Enhanced Critical Element Recovery.

Carbonation of mafic and ultramafic silicates holds great potential for carbon removal by the formation of stable carbonate minerals. Cobalt (Co), a critical element alongside minor cations, such as iron (Fe) and calcium (Ca), often coexists in these silicates. Understanding carbonate coprecipitation dynamics in multi-ion systems is essential to optimize carbon mineralization and critical element recovery. In this study, coprecipitation experiments were conducted with dominant Mg and minor cations (i.e., Co, Fe, or Ca) for a range of concentrations at 95 °C and 30 bar CO2. Characterization of …

Differential Modulation of Cadmium and Cobalt on Conspecific Alarm and Predator-Induced Neophobic Responses in Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The olfactory system is pivotal in mediating conspecific alarm responses and predator avoidance behaviors in zebrafish (Danio rerio), with its impairment posing significant survival risks. This study examined the differential impacts of two environmentally relevant heavy metals, cadmium (Cd) and cobalt (Co), on olfactory function and predator-induced behavioral responses. Adult zebrafish were exposed to sublethal concentrations of Cd (4 days) and Co (4 h), followed by behavioral assays involving exposure to conspecific alarm substance (CAS) and predator-derived chemical cues. Cd exposure signi…

Strengthening Intermediate Adsorption on a Cobalt Phthalocyanine Assembly by Polymeric Modification for Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reduction into Methanol.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) to generate value added methanol (MeOH) in water has been considered as a potential strategy to realize efficient carbon cycle and reutilization. Cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) represents as a classical molecular catalyst carrying precisely tunable active sites, which has been widely explored for the CO2-to-MeOH conversion, but optimization of performance is suffering from relatively easiness in desorption of *CO intermediate. To this end, we developed a novel molecular assembly of CoPc nanotubes (CoT) driven by van der Waals force with surface bei…

Cobalt and Iron Phthalocyanine Derivatives: Effect of Substituents on the Structure of Thin Films and Their Sensor Response to Nitric Oxide.

In this work, we study the effect of substituents in cobalt(II) and iron(II) phthalocyanines (CoPcR4 and FePcR4 with R = H, F, Cl, tBu) on the structural features of their films, and their chemi-resistive sensor response to a low concentration of nitric oxide. For the correct interpretation of diffractograms of phthalocyanine films, structures of CoPcCl4 and FePcCl4 single crystals were determined for the first time. Films were tested as active layers for the determination of low concentrations of NO (10-1000 ppb). It was found that the best sensor response to NO was observed for the films of …

Reutilization of waste self-heating pad by loading cobalt: A magnetic and green peroxymonosulfate activator for naphthalene degradation.

The disposal and recovery of solid wastes and the remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the key issues of environmental pollution control. In this study, micro cobalt loaded on iron-carbon-vermiculite composite (Co-ICV) was prepared for the first time by the reutilization of waste self-heating pad as a carrier of cobalt catalyst, which exhibited better performance than bulk cobalt catalyst in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for the degradation of naphthalene (NAP) in water. Above 98% of NAP (2.0 mg/L) was effectively eliminated within 15 min by the Co-ICV (0.2 g/L) acti…

Synthesis and Antibacterial Activity Studies of the Conjugates of Curcumin with closo-Dodecaborate and Cobalt Bis(Dicarbollide) Boron Clusters.

A series of novel conjugates of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) and closo-dodecaborate with curcumin were synthesized by copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition. These conjugates were tested for antibacterial activity. It was shown that all derivatives are active when exposed to Bacillus cereus ATCC 10702 and are not active against Gram-negative microorganisms and Candida albicans at the maximum studied concentration of 1000 mg/L. The conjugate of alkynyl-curcumin with azide synthesized from the tetrahydropyran derivative of cobalt bis(dicarbollide) exhibited activity against Gram-positive mic…

Non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy associated with elevated serum cobalt and accelerated wear of a metal-on-metal hip resurfacing.

A man in his late 30s developed non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy due to systemic cobalt toxicity associated with accelerated bearing surface wear from metal-on-metal hip resurfacing implanted in the previous 6 years. Following revision arthroplasty, the patient regained baseline cardiac function. Cobalt-induced cardiomyopathy is a grave condition that deserves early consideration due to potentially irreversible morbidity. We present this case to increase awareness, facilitate early detection and emphasise the need for research into the diagnosis and management of at-risk patients.

In vitro assessment of cobalt oxide particle dissolution in simulated lung fluids for identification of new decorporating agents.

Inhalation of 60Co3O4 particles may occur at the work place in nuclear industry. Their low solubility may result in chronic lung exposure to γ rays. Our strategy for an improved therapeutic approach is to enhance particle dissolution to facilitate cobalt excretion, as the dissolved fraction is rapidly eliminated, mainly in urine. In vitro dissolution of Co3O4 particles was assessed with two complementary assays in lung fluid surrogates to mimic a pulmonary contamination scenario. Twenty-one molecules and eleven combinations were selected through an extensive search in the literature, based on …

The Effect of Different Thermal Treatment on the Allotropic fcc↔hcp Transformation and Compression Behavior of Polycrystalline Cobalt.

Pure polycrystalline cobalt is systematically thermally treated in order to assess the effect of the microstructure on the compression behavior. Isothermal annealing of the as-drawn material leads to recrystallization and grain growth dependent on the annealing temperature (600-1100 ∘C). Consequently, the yield strength decreases and the fracture strain increases as a function of rising grain size; the content of the residual fcc phase is ~6-11%. Subsequent thermal cycling around the transition temperature is applied to further modify the microstructure, especially in terms of the fcc phase co…

A Comparative Study on the Direct and Pulsed Current Electrodeposition of Cobalt-Substituted Hydroxyapatite for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Application.

Hydroxyapatite has excellent biocompatibility and osteo-conductivity and, as the main inorganic component of human bones and teeth, is commonly used for bone repair. Its original characteristics can be changed by metal ion substitution. Cobalt ions can act as hypoxia-inducible factors and accelerate bone repair. At the same time, cobalt has paramagnetic properties and is often used in the study of medical imaging and target drugs. Through the introduction of cobalt ions, the unique hydroxyapatite has better biological activity and positioning of medical images. Herein, cobalt-substituted hydro…

Differential Effect of Cobalt and Chromium Ions as Well as CoCr Particles on the Expression of Osteogenic Markers and Osteoblast Function.

The balance of bone formation and resorption is the result of a regulated crosstalk between osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes. Inflammation, mechanical load, and external stimuli modulate this system. Exposure of bone cells to metal ions or wear particles are thought to cause osteolysis via activation of osteoclasts and inhibition of osteoblast activity. Co2+ ions have been shown to impair osteoblast function and the expression of the three transforming growth factor (TGF)-β isoforms. The current study was performed to analyze how Co2+ and Cr3+ influence the expression, proliferation, a

Understanding the tissue effects of tribo-corrosion: uptake, distribution, and speciation of cobalt and chromium in human bone cells.

Cobalt and chromium species are released in the local tissues as a result of tribo-corrosion, and affect bone cell survival and function. However we have little understanding of the mechanisms of cellular entry, intracellular distribution, and speciation of the metals that result in impaired bone health. Here we used synchrotron based X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and fluorescent-probing approaches of candidate receptors P2X7R and divalent metal transporter-1 (DMT-1), to better understand the entry, intra-cellular distribution and speciation of cobalt (Co) and …
