Cognitive-behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy for anxiety and depression in patients with fibromyalgia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Defined by chronic, musculoskeletal pain, fibromyalgia is often comorbid with depression and anxiety. In these cases, the first line medical treatment can be successfully combined with psychological interventions. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy are among the most widely studied approaches in relation to chronic pain, including fibromyalgia. The objective of this review is to analyze the efficiency of these psychological treatments for alleviating emotional distress in fibromyalgia. METHOD: The search was conducted on the PubMed, Scopus and Web

Reducing Test Anxiety During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Comparison of the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Educational assessments can affect students' mental health, particularly during a pandemic. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are widely efficacious for reducing test anxiety, as well as general anxiety and rumination. However, the effectiveness of these two therapies for students during COVID-19 is unclear. We measured the effectiveness of ACT and CBT for managing test anxiety, general anxiety, and rumination during COVID-19 for 77 students taking Türkiye's national university entrance exam, assigned to either the ACT or CBT psychoeducation program…

Examining Positive and Negative Affect as Outcomes and Moderators of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Traditional cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety disorders has been designed to target reductions in negative affect (NA) associated with defense-related processes. However, a subset of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety disorder (SAD), are also characterized by low positive affect (PA) resulting from separate deficits in appetitive-related processes. In contrast to CBT, "third-wave" approaches, such as acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), align more consistently with motivational processes and, as a result, PA. However, the differential effect of CBT and ACT on PA and N

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy-guided neurofeedback combined with art therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy for post-stroke depression: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common complication impairing recovery. This study aimed to compare standard cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with an enhanced version integrating functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-guided neurofeedback and art therapy (NF-AT+CBT) in patients with mild-to-moderate PSD. METHODS: In this multicenter, assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial, 50 patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to NF-AT+CBT or standard CBT for 12 weeks (two 45-60 min sessions/week). Primary outcome was change in Hamilton Depression Rating Scale-17 (HAMD-17) scor…

Comparing the efficacy of electronic cognitive behavioral therapy to medication and combination therapy for generalized anxiety disorder: a quasi-experimental clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a debilitating mental health disorder with first-line treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy. CBT is costly, time-consuming, and inaccessible. Electronic delivery (e-CBT) is a promising solution to address these barriers. However, due to the novelty of this intervention, more research testing the e-CBT efficacy independently and in conjunction with other treatments is needed. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the efficacy of e-CBT compared to and in conjunction with pharmacotherapy for GAD. METHODS: This st…

Effectiveness, Timing and Procedural Aspects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy after Deep Brain Stimulation for Therapy-Resistant Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Background and aim: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective treatment for patients with severe therapy-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). After initiating DBS many patients still require medication and/or behavioral therapy to deal with persisting symptoms and habitual behaviors. The clinical practice of administering postoperative cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) varies widely, and there are no clinical guidelines for this add-on therapy. The aim of this review is to assess the efficacy, timing and procedural aspects of postoperative CBT in OCD patients treated with DBS. Me…

Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapies Targeting Cognitive Biases and Beliefs in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Cognitive models of schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (SSD) posit dysfunctional beliefs and cognitive biases as maintenance mechanisms of positive and negative symptoms. Although cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) targets these processes, its effects on mechanism-level outcomes remain unclear. This review examined whether CBT modifies dysfunctional beliefs and cognitive biases in SSD using rigorous randomized evidence. STUDY DESIGN: PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO registered). Primary analyses were restricted to intention-to-treat …

Treating children's aggressive behavior problems using cognitive behavior therapy with virtual reality: A multicenter randomized controlled trial.

This multicenter randomized controlled trial investigated whether interactive virtual reality enhanced effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to reduce children's aggressive behavior problems. Boys with aggressive behavior problems (N = 115; Mage  = 10.58, SD = 1.48; 95.7% born in Netherlands) were randomized into three groups: CBT with virtual reality, CBT with roleplays, or care-as-usual. Bayesian analyses showed that CBT with virtual reality more likely reduced aggressive behavior compared to care-as-usual for six of seven outcomes (ds 0.19-0.95), and compared to CBT with rolep…

Parent Management Training Augmentation to Address Coercive and Disruptive Behavior in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Pediatric Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Coercive and disruptive behaviors commonly interfere with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) trials among youths with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although evidence supports parent management training (PMT) for reducing disruptive behavior, no group-based PMT interventions exist for OCD-related disruptive behaviors. We studied feasibility and effectiveness of group-based adjunctive PMT among non-randomized, OCD-affected families receiving family-based group CBT. Linear mixed models estimated treatment effects across OCD-related and parenting outcomes at post-treatment and 1-month follo

The role of therapist and patient in-session behavior for treatment outcome in exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy for panic disorder with agoraphobia.

OBJECTIVE: There is a very limited amount of research on the relationship between therapist and patient in-session behavior and treatment outcome in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PD/AG). Additionally, the findings tend to be inconclusive. This study investigates the association between therapist competence, adherence, patient interpersonal behavior, and therapeutic alliance and outcome in a low-control CBT setting by using comprehensive measures. METHODS: Twenty-six patients with PD/AG received 12 sessions of exposure-based CBT. With regard to the out…

What is clinically significant improvement in cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia? A scoping review of randomized controlled trials.

In randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the primary focus is often on between-group differences in mean outcomes. However, to evaluate the efficacy of a treatment, it is equally important to consider how many patients achieve a meaningful clinical response, which requires careful operational definitions. The aim was to review RCTs on cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) to determine how clinically significant improvement including response, remission and recovery are defined. 519 publications were included in this scoping review. Excluding secondary analyses, 380 unique RCTs on CB…

Eight-session manualized cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and depression symptoms in perimenopause and postmenopause: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Mood and anxiety symptoms at the menopause transition are common. However, most cognitive-behavioral treatments focused on perimenopause center on managing physical symptoms such as hot flashes, and not mood symptoms. In this case series, we assessed the impact of a CBT intervention program on anxiety and depressive symptoms among individuals in perimenopause or postmenopause, who reported mood symptoms. METHODS: The intervention included eight 45-minute sessions of individual CBT with a clinical psychologist, and included CBT skills training (eg, behavioral activation, reframing n

Comparative Efficacy of Brief Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Generalized Anxiety Disorder: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the most established psychological treatment for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), yet many patients do not achieve full remission. Brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy represents a theoretically distinct alternative, but direct controlled comparisons remain limited. This study examined the short-term efficacy of brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy and CBT relative to a waitlist control in adults with GAD. Methods: In a three-arm randomized controlled trial, 60 adults with DSM-5-diagnosed GAD were allocated to brief psychoanalytic psychotherapy …

Cultural Relevance and Acceptability of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Techniques Adapted by AI or a Human Psychologist: Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based psychological interventions are usually not accessed by marginalized groups such as refugees. Culturally adapted psychological interventions have reported larger effect sizes than nonadapted psychological interventions. However, the cultural adaptation of interventions is a lengthy process, entailing a challenge. One potential solution to overcome this challenge is the use of artificial intelligence (AI). OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the perceived cultural relevance and acceptability of 2 common cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) t…
