Cognitive Intervention in a Patient with Lewy Bodies through Origami: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Lewy Body Dementia (LBD) is a form of Neurocognitive Disorder that can lead to impairments in memory, attention, cognitive flexibility, and mood. Cognitive intervention has been scientifically recognized as an effective tool in supporting older adults, with or without clinical conditions, utilizing various stimulation tools. In this context, origami folding emerges as a potential clinical intervention. OBJECTIVE: The objective is to evaluate the effects on cognition, mood, and emotional processes of an older adult with LBD who participated in a cognitive stimulation program usin…

The cognitive effects of stopping and starting antipsychotics on changes in cognitive functioning.

OBJECTIVES: The current study uses longitudinal data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) to assess the effects of antip … cy (Fruit and Vegetable Naming), processing speed (Digit Symbol and Trail Making Test, Part A), and cognitive flexibility (Trail Making Test, Part B). Conversely, stopping an antipsychotic medication was protective against declines in the same cognitive skills. The effect of antipsychotic medications on cognitive functioning did not appear to differ by reported changes …

Interaction between apolipoprotein E genotypes, excessive daytime sleepiness, and cognitive function in obstructive sleep apnea patients.

BACKGROUND: Some studies show an association between the apolipoprotein E ε4 allele (ApoEε4) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), an … e had a worse performance in divided attention, constructional praxis, perceptual organization, and cognitive flexibility. A combination of the ε4 allele and EDS potentiates the negative effect on cognition, except for immediate visual memory. In this case, patients had a worse performance in terms of processing speed, selective attention, and visuomotor coordination. …

Impaired Set-Shifting from Dorsal Stream Disconnection: Insights from a European Series of Right Parietal Lower-Grade Glioma Resection.

Awake surgery with cognitive monitoring has increasingly been implemented to preserve brain networks and functionality. More recently, not only surgery in the left but also in the right hemisphere, i.c., the parietal lobe, was associated with potential risk for deficits in cognitive functions, such as cognitive flexibility. In this explorative pilot study, we compare cognitive performance more than three months after surgery with baseline measurements and explore the association between cognitive decline and subcortical tracts that may have been severed during surgery in the right hemisphere. …

Selective Patterns of Cognitive Impairment in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 6 and Idiopathic Late-Onset Cerebellar Ataxia.

PURPOSE: To determine cognitive impairment patterns in patients with spinocerebellar ataxia type 6 (SCA6) compared to patients with idiopathic late-onset cerebellar ataxia (ILOCA). METHODS: Neurocognitive testing was conducted on 21 SCA6, nine ILOCA, and 27 controls subjects. Intergroup differences were assessed using the Wilcoxon signed-ranked test or Student's t-test. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed on nine cognitive variables, and Hotelling's T-squared test assessed group-specific differences. Pearson's correlations assessed changes in cognitive performance and disease pro

Counterfactual thinking in Tourette's syndrome: a study using three measures.

Pathophysiological evidence suggests an involvement of frontostriatal circuits in Tourette syndrome (TS) and cognitive abnormalities have been detected in tasks sensitive to cognitive deficits associated with prefrontal damage (verbal fluency, planning, attention shifting, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and social reasoning). A disorder in counterfactual thinking (CFT), a behavioural executive process linked to the prefrontal cortex functioning, has not been investigated in TS. CFT refers to the generation of a mental simulation of alternatives to past factual events, actions, and outc…

Synaptogyrin-3 Prevents Cocaine Addiction and Dopamine Deficits.

Synaptogyrin-3, a functionally obscure synaptic vesicle protein, interacts with vesicular monoamine and dopamine transporters, bringing together dopamine release and reuptake sites. Synaptogyrin-3 was reduced by chronic cocaine exposure in both humans and rats, and synaptogyrin-3 levels inversely correlated with motivation to take cocaine in rats. Synaptogyrin-3 overexpression in dopamine neurons reduced cocaine self-administration, decreased anxiety-like behavior, and enhanced cognitive flexibility. Overexpression also enhanced nucleus accumbens dopamine signaling and prevented cocaine-induce…

Goals Shape Dynamics of Attention and Selection for Value-Based Decision-Making.

Humans can flexibly adjust how they make decisions to arbitrary goals. However, most theories in decision-making focus on predicting one specific choice type (i.e., choosing the best option). Here, we link decision-making and cognitive-control research to test a theory that accounts for flexible adjustments of choice mechanisms to different goals and demands. Our biologically inspired model specifies how different features translate into evidence for the current goal, and how evidence is mapped onto different output structures. We tested the model in an eye-tracking study in which participants

Cerebral blood flow associated with creative performance: a comparative study.

Creativity is important for social survival and individual wellbeing; science, art, philosophy and technology have been enriched and expanded by this trait. To our knowledge this is the first study probing differences in brain cerebral blood flow (CBF) between highly creative individuals (scientists and/or artists socially recognized for their contributions to their fields with creativity indexes corresponding to the 99% percentile) and average control subjects while performing a verbal task from the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking. Additionally, we correlated CBF with creativity dimension

Abstract Purpose This study examined whether adults with Multiple Myeloma (MM) show measurable cognitive differences compared with neurologi … sian modelling identified multi-domain RT-related deficits in ~ 22% of MM patients, particularly in cognitive flexibility and semantic processing. EZ-DDM indicated that group differences were driven by reduced drift rates and prolonged non-decision times in MM, suggesting slower evidence accumulation with slower sensory encoding and/or motor execution. Conclusion Cogni …

Carotid Plaque Strain Indices Were Correlated With Cognitive Performance in a Cohort With Advanced Atherosclerosis, and Traditional Doppler Measures Showed no Association.

OBJECTIVES: Traditional Doppler measures have been used to predict cognitive performance in patients with carotid atherosclerosis. Novel measures, such as carotid plaque strain indices (CPSIs), have shown associations with cognitive performance. We hypothesized that lower mean middle cerebral artery (MCA) velocities, higher bulb-internal carotid artery (ICA) velocities, the MCA pulsatility index (PI), and CPSIs would be associated with poorer cognitive performance in individuals with advanced atherosclerosis. METHODS: Neurocognitive testing, carotid ultrasound imaging, transcranial Doppler im

Identifying cognitive deficits in cocaine dependence using standard tests and machine learning.

There is a growing need to address the variability in detecting cognitive deficits with standard tests in cocaine dependence (CD). The aim o … ive test resulted in robust predictors for accurate classification of new cases, such as those from cognitive flexibility and inhibition domains. These findings provide evidence of the effectiveness of ML as an approach to highlight relevant sections of standard cognitive tests in CD, and for the identification of generalizable cognitive markers.

Nonhuman primates exhibit error type-dependent post-error slowing across modalities.

Mistakes make up our daily lives. Once a mistake has been committed, it is common to pause before you continue. This slowing is called post-error slowing (PES). Although several theories have been proposed to account for PES in humans, findings across cognitive tasks show variation in how PES occurs, and it is unclear how this phenomenon may translate across modalities to a key model organism of human cognition, macaque monkeys. To determine whether monkeys exhibit PES, we tested three rhesus macaque monkeys in components of cognitive sequential decision-making tasks that used either eye track

Subthalamic nucleus dynamics during executive functioning: Insights from local field potentials in Parkinson's disease.

This study explores the involvement of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in executive functions, particularly cognitive flexibility, in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Utilizing a computerized Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST) and local field potential (LFP) recordings from implanted deep brain stimulation (DBS) electrodes, we investigated task-specific neural dynamics. Behavioural results demonstrated increased error rates and prolonged response times in trials requiring set-shifting and rule induction via cross-temporal information integration. Electrophysiological analyses revealed integrat…

Memories or decisions? Bridging accounts of frontopolar function.

Frontopolar cortex (FPC), for a long time elusive to functional description, is now associated with a wide range of cognitive processes. Prominent accounts of FPC function emerged from studies of memory (e.g., episodic and prospective memory; EM and PM, respectively) and of executive function (e.g., planning, multi-tasking, relational reasoning, cognitive branching, etc). In recent years, FPC function has begun to be described within the context of value-based decision making in terms of monitoring the value of alternatives and optimizing cognitive resources to balance the explore/exploit dile

Mnemonic and behavioral effects of biperiden, an M1-selective antagonist, in the rat.

RATIONALE: There is a persistent pressing need for valid animal models of cognitive and mnemonic disruptions (such as seen in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias) usable for preclinical research. OBJECTIVES: We have set out to test the validity of administration of biperiden, an M1-acetylcholine receptor antagonist with central selectivity, as a potential tool for generating a fast screening model of cognitive impairment, in outbred Wistar rats. METHODS: We used several variants of the Morris water maze task: (1) reversal learning, to assess cognitive flexibility, with probe trials testi…
