Dietary Tyrosine Intake (FFQ) Is Associated with Locus Coeruleus, Attention and Grey Matter Maintenance: An MRI Structural Study on 398 Healthy Individuals of the Berlin Aging Study-II.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It is documented that low protein and amino-acid dietary intake is related to poorer cognitive health and increase … he role of diet for maintaining brain and cognitive health and supports the noradrenergic theory of cognitive reserve. Within this framework, adequate tyrosine intake might increase the resilience of LC-NA system functioning, by preventing degeneration and supporting noradrenergic metabolism required for LC function and neuropsychological performance.

A review of general cognitive-behavioral programs in English and Welsh prisons and probation services: Three decades of quasi-experimental evaluations.

For over 30 years, general cognitive-behavioral programs have contributed to the rehabilitation services offered within His Majesty's Prison and Probation Service in England and Wales. There is an extensive body of international evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of such interventions as a correctional strategy. However, there is widespread variability of program effects associated with the standards of implementation. Over the last 3 decades, British researchers have produced a steady output of quasi-experimental program evaluations that have contributed to the evidence base. The mo

Maternal repetitive hypoxia prior to mating confers epigenetic resilience to memory impairment in male progeny.

We showed previously in a mouse model of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia involving chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) that repetitive hypoxic conditioning (RHC) of both parents results in the epigenetic, intergenerational transmission of resilience to recognition memory loss in adult progeny, as assessed by the novel object recognition test. The present study was undertaken in the same model to determine whether RHC treatment of one or both parents is required to confer dementia resilience intergenerationally. We found inherited resilience to 3 months of CCH in males is maternally

The role of affective control in emotion regulation during adolescence.

In this review, we evaluate evidence for the hypothesis that developmental changes in emotion regulation tendencies during adolescence depend on the maturation of affective control. Affective control refers to the application of cognitive control to affective contexts, that is, the capacity to attend and respond to goal-relevant affective information, while inhibiting attention and responses toward distracting affective information. The evidence suggests that affective control develops throughout adolescence into adulthood. However, the developmental trajectory appears not to be uniform across

The effect of hypertension on cerebrovascular carbon dioxide reactivity in atrial fibrillation patients.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) and hypertension (HTN) are both associated with impaired cerebrovascular carbon dioxide reactivity (CVRCO2), an indicator of cerebral vasodilatory reserve. We hypothesised that CVRCO2 would be lower in patients with both AF and HTN (AF + HTN) compared to normotensive AF patients, due to an additive effect of AF and HTN on CVRCO2. Forty AF (68 ± 9 years) and fifty-seven AF + HTN (68 ± 8 years) patients underwent transcranial Doppler ultrasound measurement of middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCA Vm) during stepped increases and decreases in end-tidal carbon dioxide

Graded normobaric hypoxia alters cerebral oxygenation and cognition in middle-aged adults: a single-blind counterbalanced randomized crossover trial.

Aging is associated with reduced cerebrovascular reactivity and impaired neurovascular coupling, limiting the brain's ability to maintain adequate oxygen delivery during physiological stressors such as hypoxia. These vascular changes may heighten middle-aged adults' vulnerability to hypoxia-induced neural and cognitive impairments, yet dose-response data integrating cerebral oxygenation and cognition remain scarce. In a single-blind, randomized crossover trial, 16 participants completed four normobaric sessions (45-65 min each) at different FiO2 levels (20.9%, 17.4%, 14.5%, and 12.5%), includi

Efficacy and Safety of Massage Therapy for Cognitive Impairment in Patients With Autism Spectrum Disorder: Protocol for a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by social communication deficits and cognitive impairment. As pharmacological and behavioral treatments often show inconsistent efficacy, massage therapy-a low-risk complementary approach including tuina and acupressure-is used to improve cognitive symptoms, yet its systematic efficacy and safety remain unevaluated. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of massage therapy (categorized into traditional Chinese medicine-based and Western-based approaches) fo

Equality in the eye of the advantaged beholder: Group status shapes perceptions of equality as zero-sum.

Equality is widely endorsed in principle, yet equality-enhancing policies are routinely opposed as if one group's gain is another's loss. We propose that group status fundamentally shapes motivation to enhance equality-above and beyond ideological beliefs, threat-based reactance, personal gain, or underlying cognitive biases-determining whether individuals see equality-enhancing policies as harmful. Across five preregistered lab and representative field studies (N = 5,116), we find that advantaged-but not disadvantaged-group members systematically perceived equality policies as harmful to adva

Nightmares, insomnia, and suicide within a trauma-exposed sample.

OBJECTIVE: The literature is mixed regarding the relationship between nightmares and suicide, with some suggesting that the variance in nightmares is explained by fear of sleep (FoS), insomnia, and/or obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We add clarity to the literature by examining the relationship between nightmares, insomnia, and suicide within a trauma-exposed sample, while controlling for FoS and OSA. METHOD: Our sample included 223 trauma-exposed participants who completed an anonymous online survey measuring trauma exposure, insomnia symptoms, nightmare frequency, FoS, suicide cognitions (SC

The mutual influence of parent-child maladaptive emotion regulation on posttraumatic stress following flood exposure.

Decades of disaster research support the influence parents have on their children's adaptation. Recently, research has shifted to focus on disasters as a whole family experience. Using the actor-partner interdependence model, this study examines maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in parents and children and how these strategies influence their own and one another's posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). The present study includes 485 parent-child dyads who experienced the 2015-2016 Texas floods. The majority of parents identified as mothers (66.3%), with a male child (52.8%) wh

Factors associated with pain intensity and analgesic use during inpatient rehabilitation for hip fracture.

PURPOSE: Effective pain management is vital for hip fracture recovery, yet the factors influencing pain reporting and pain medication use during inpatient rehabilitation for hip fractures are not well understood. This observational study aimed to (a) determine how cognitive abilities, expressive and receptive language abilities, and age are related to average daily pain intensity and analgesic use and (b) how average daily pain intensity and analgesic use are related to length of stay and functional outcomes in rehabilitation. DESIGN: Data were retrospectively obtained from 163 patients recov

Effects of a psychological first aid (PFA) based on the SIX Cs model on acute stress responses in a simulated emergency.

OBJECTIVE: The SIX Cs model, a neuropsychological framework for psychological first aid, addresses acute stress responses that may lead to functional failure and heighten the risk for posttraumatic stress disorder. Unlike emotional interventions, this model prioritizes Cognitive Communication to diminish emotional overwhelm and bolster cognitive functioning. It introduces a Challenge for active engagement, Control for cognitive management of situations, Commitment from the helper to reduce loneliness, and Continuity to ensure narrative coherence. This study evaluates the SIX Cs model's effecti

Symptoms of borderline personality and related pathologies behave as temporal and contemporaneous networks.

In contrast to latent variable models suggesting a common etiology, network theory proposes that symptoms of psychopathology co-occur because of direct, dynamic associations among them. We examined how symptoms associated with borderline personality disorder, depression, and anxiety mutually reinforce one another over time, forming a network. We further identified symptoms that drove the network by exerting the most influence on other symptoms. Participants were 37 undergraduate students aged 18 to 26. Following baseline assessment, participants were prompted to answer a Qualtrics-based survey

Mothers' resilience and potential for disrupted parenting in COVID-19: The protective effect of cognitive reappraisal.

Stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic may pose acute threats to caregivers' capacity to cope and result in problematic parenting. However, studies have suggested that some caregivers were able to maintain high resilience when facing hardship. The goal of the present study was to examine how COVID-19-related stress affects resilience and parenting of mothers with young children and whether mothers' individual differences in emotion regulation skills lead to different resilience and parenting outcomes. We followed a sample of 298 mothers in the United States with children between 0 and 3 years

Extended FNAME performance is preserved in subjective cognitive decline but highly affected in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive characterization of Alzheimer's disease risk states, such as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD), is fundamental for timely diagnosis and interventions. The Face Name Associative Memory Exam (FNAME) is sensitive to early Alzheimer's disease brain changes, and an extended version captures a fuller range of associative memory abilities. We aimed to assess group effects in the extended FNAME in older adults with SCD, aMCI, and older adult controls (CON). METHOD: Two concurrently created versions of the extended FNAME were used

Cognitive remediation therapy in anorexia nervosa-A randomized clinical trial.

Objective: Especially for adult patients with anorexia nervosa (AN), treatment response is generally low to moderate. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) as adjunctive treatment for AN regarding clinical and cognitive outcomes. Method: In this randomized controlled superiority trial, 167 adult and adolescent (≥17 years) patients with AN were randomly allocated (1:1) to 10 weekly sessions of group therapy of either CRT (n = 82) or art therapy (ART; n = 85) as an adjunct to inpatient treatment-as-usual (TAU). Outcomes were assessed at baseline,

Examining the impact of online rejection among emerging adults with borderline personality pathology: Development of a novel online group chat social rejection paradigm.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional reactivity and interpersonal sensitivity, including greater emotional and cognitive reactivity to social rejection than controls. However, existing social rejection paradigms are not relevant to the particular social contexts that are increasingly relevant for adolescents and young adults (i.e., social media and online settings). This study examined emotional, parasympathetic, and cognitive responses to a novel online group chat social interaction task among emerging adults (18-24 years old) with a range of BPD pathology. A cross-sectional and longitudinal network analysis approach to understanding connections among social anxiety components in youth.

As proposed in a prominent developmental model, social anxiety has different manifestations: social fear, shy temperament, anxious cognitions, and avoidance of social situations. Drawing from this model, we used the network approach to psychopathology to gain a detailed understanding of specific social anxiety components and their associations. The current article investigated (a) how social anxiety components are interconnected within a network, and (b) the consistency of the network over time, in a community sample of children and adolescents. Data from 3 waves of a longitudinal study were u

Modified cognitive behavioral therapy (M-CBT) for cocaine dependence: Development of treatment for cognitively impaired users and results from a Stage 1 trial.

Cognitive impairments are associated with poor outcomes when treating cocaine dependent patients, but behavioral interventions to mitigate this impact have not been developed. In this Stage 1A/1B treatment development study, several compensatory strategies (e.g., content repetition, daily logs, diaries, visual presentation) were combined to create a modified cognitive behavioral therapy (M-CBT) for treating cocaine dependence. Initially, a select group of therapists, neuropsychology experts, and patients were asked to provide input on early drafts of the treatment manual and companion patient
