Digital nerve injuries: epidemiology, results, costs, and impact on daily life.

Epidemiology, results of treatment, impact on activity of daily living (ADL), and costs for treatment of digital nerve injuries have not been considered consistently. Case notes of patients of 0-99 years of age living in Malmö municipality, Sweden, who presented with a digital nerve injury and were referred to the Department of Hand Surgery in 1995-2005 were analysed retrospectively. The incidence was 6.2/100 000 inhabitants and year. Most commonly men (75%; median age 29 years) were injured. Isolated nerve injuries and concomitant tendon injuries were equally common. The direct costs (hospita

[Effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture on the expression of glutamate and NMDA receptor of the spinal dorsal horn in rats with neuropathic pain].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effect of wrist-ankle acupuncture (WA) stimulation at "R4"- "R5" - "R6" on the expression of glutamate (Glu) and phosphorylated protein NMDAR1(p-NMDAR1) of the spinal dorsal horn in spared nerve injury (SNI) rats, so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of SNI. METHODS: A total of 36 SD rats were randomly divi-ded into sham operation, model and WA groups, with 12 rats in each group. The SNI procedure comprised an axotomy and ligation of the tibial and common peroneal nerves leaving the sural nerve intact. Rats of the WA group were treated by acupuncture

A non-heart-beating donor model to evaluate functional and morphologic outcomes in resuscitated pig hearts.

A non-heart-beating donor model was considered to examine whether pig hearts from the abattoir could be resuscitated by whole blood reperfusion. For preservation, machine perfusion using University of Wisconsin (UW) solution was compared with storage on ice. Nineteen hearts from abattoir pigs, harvested 25 +/- 3 min after exsanguination, were harvested and transported to the laboratory. Controls (n = 7) were immediately reperfused with homologous whole pig blood in an isolated heart model for 60 min with monitoring of left ventricular developed pressure (LVDP), contractility, and coronary flow

Restoration of function and sensitivity utilizing a homodigital neurovascular island flap after amputation injuries of the fingertip.

Sixty-three fingertip amputations in 50 patients were reconstructed using a homodigital neurovascular island flap technique based on a single neurovascular pedicle without further shortening of the distal phalanx. The procedure was carried out under regional anaesthesia, using a tourniquet and magnifying loupes. All of the flaps survived and achieved normal or adequate two-point discrimination without any painful scar or cold hypersensitivity. Fifteen patients had some loss of distal interphalangeal joint extension. The technique is simple and presents an excellent method for fingertip reconst

Central palatal burns associated with the eating of microwaved pizzas.

Burns of the oral mucosa can be caused by heat, cold, radiation, electricity and mechanical or chemical stimuli. Acids, alkalis and salts can cause considerable damage to the oral mucosa, membranes and lips. Most damage is found in the oropharynx, besides the pharynx and tonsils, the alveolar mucosa of the tongue and the masticatory mucosa of the palate or gingiva show localized or diffused damage. The clinical appearance depends on the severity of the tissue damage and the destructive properties and mode of application of the causative agent. We present an illustrative case of central palatal

[Bacteriological aspects of traumatisms caused by animals (author's transl)].

Bacterial complications of traumatisms caused by animals are very frequent if no proper therapy is applied. Germs detected in the wounds caused by cold-blood animals or by invertebrates are mostly represented by bacterias of telluric origin (responsible of gas gangrene, tetanus...) with the eventual worsening effect of venom. Germs detected in the wound caused by warm-blood animals have their origin in the dental commensal flora in which anaerobic germs prevail. Pasteurellosises are specially feared after animal bites but human bites too must not be neglected. Therapy first target must be the

Non-obstetric vulval trauma.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the mechanism, injury pattern and management of women who present to the ED with non-obstetric vulval trauma. METHODS: A retrospective, single-institution case series was carried out. Data were sourced from medical records of women who presented to the ED and Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital between 2007 and 2011. Records of possible injuries to the vulva were assessed to determine incidence, age, site, type of injury, mechanism of injury and whether urinary retention required treatment. This information was analysed using the computer software Statistical Package fo

Cryoanalgesia: Review with Respect to Peripheral Nerve.

BACKGROUND: Cryoanalgesia is a tool being used by interventional radiology to treat chronic pain. Within a certain cold temperature range, peripheral nerve function is interrupted and recovers, without neuroma formation. Cryoanalgesia has most often been applied to the intercostal nerve. Cryoanalgesia has applications to peripheral nerve surgery, yet is poorly understood by reconstructive microsurgeons. METHODS: Histopathology of nerve injury was reviewed to understand cold applied to peripheral nerve. Literature review was performed utilizing the PubMed and MEDLINE databases to identify comp

A novel therapeutic with two SNAP-25 inactivating proteases shows long-lasting anti-hyperalgesic activity in a rat model of neuropathic pain.

A pressing need exists for long-acting, non-addictive medicines to treat chronic pain, a major societal burden. Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) complex - a potent, specific and prolonged inhibitor of neuro-exocytosis - gives some relief in several pain disorders, but not for all patients. Our study objective was to modify BoNT/A to overcome its inability to block transmitter release elicited by high [Ca2+]i and increase its limited analgesic effects. This was achieved by fusing a BoNT/A gene to that for the light chain (LC) of type/E. The resultant purified protein, LC/E-BoNT/A, entered c

Long-term subjective and objective outcomes after digital nerve repair: a cohort study.

Digital nerve injuries are common, but few studies report long-term effects for the individual. The primary aim of this matched-pairs study comparing digital nerve injuries in border digits or central fingers was to investigate hand function 3-10 years after digital nerve repair, assessed using the Mini Sollerman test in 86 patients. Secondary outcomes were sensory function, range of motion, grip strength and patient-reported measures. No significant difference was seen in hand function between the groups, except for lower grip strength in patients with central finger injury. Tactile discrimin

Does a neuroimmune interaction contribute to the genesis of painful peripheral neuropathies?

Painful peripheral neuropathies are precipitated by nerve injury from disease or trauma. All such injuries will be accompanied by an inflammatory reaction, a neuritis, that will mobilize the immune system. The role of the inflammation itself is difficult to determine in the presence of structural damage to the nerve. A method has been devised to produce a focal neuritis in the rat sciatic nerve that involves no more than trivial structural damage to the nerve. This experimental focal neuritis produces neuropathic pain sensations (heat- and mechano-hyperalgesia, and cold- and mechano-allodynia)

Progranulin overexpression in sensory neurons attenuates neuropathic pain in mice: Role of autophagy.

Peripheral or central nerve injury is a frequent cause of chronic pain and the mechanisms are not fully understood. Using newly generated transgenic mice we show that progranulin overexpression in sensory neurons attenuates neuropathic pain after sciatic nerve injury and accelerates nerve healing. A yeast-2-hybrid screen revealed putative interactions of progranulin with autophagy-related proteins, ATG12 and ATG4b. This was supported by colocalization and proteomic studies showing regulations of ATG13 and ATG4b and other members of the autophagy network, lysosomal proteins and proteins involve

Emergency preparedness in high school-based athletics: a review of the literature and recommendations for sport health professionals.

Approximately 7.6 million high school students in the United States participate in sports. Although most sport-related injuries in adolescents are considered minor emergencies, life-threatening illnesses or injuries may occur, such as sudden cardiac arrest, heat stroke, status asthmaticus and exercise-induced asthma, catastrophic brain injuries, cervical spine injuries, heat- and cold-related illness, blunt chest/abdominal injuries, and extremity fractures resulting in compartment syndrome. Emergency preparedness in athletics involves the identification of and planning for medical services to

Radiation combined injury: overview of NIAID research.

The term "radiation combined injury" (RCI) is used to describe conditions where radiation injury is coupled with other insults such as burns, wounds, infection, or blunt trauma. A retrospective account of injuries sustained following the atomic bombing of Hiroshima estimates that RCI comprised approximately 65% of all injuries observed. Much of the research that has been performed on RCI was carried out during the Cold War and our understanding of the clinical problem RCI presents does not reflect the latest advances in medicine or science. Because concerns have increased that terrorists might

Comparative efficacy of advanced preservation strategies for donation after circulatory death liver grafts: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Donation after circulatory death liver grafts are exposed to warm ischemic injury, which may be worsened by prolonged cold storage time and attenuated by advanced preservation strategies. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane until June 2025, identifying 19 comparative studies for Bayesian network meta-analysis. Static cold storage (SCS), hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE, including dual-vessel HOPE), normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), and hybrid sequences were compared. NRP was associated with improved 1-year graft survival (hazard ratio, 0.67

Time-dependent characterisation of sex differences in the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of neuropathic pain.

Chronic neuropathic pain affects 7-10 % of the population and is often accompanied by emotional impairments, greatly reducing the quality of life of patients. Recently, we showed that in the chronic constriction injury (CCI) model of experimental neuropathic pain, female (but not male) rats showed a delayed but progressive development of mechanical and cold allodynia, which did not improve over time. In this work, we characterised the CCI-induced nociceptive and emotional impairments at earlier (2 weeks) and later (8 weeks) time points in both male and female rats. Both neuropathic males and f
