In order to obtain further knowledge of chronic neutropenia of childhood, we studied nine neutropenic infants six to ten months of age by in vitro techniques, including bone marrow culture, electron microscopy, and chemotaxis assay. Eight of the nine patients had a benign clinical course and the bone marrow aspirates showed a reduced number of segmented neutrophils. The ninth patient had a moderately severe course and the bone marrow showed maturation arrest at the promyelocyte stage. The susceptibilities to Japanese encephalitis virus of eight strains of Culex tritaeniorhynchus, seven domestic and one from Taiwan, were studied quantitatively by the membrane feeding technique. Two colonies of female outbred nude (athymic) mice were maintained by conventional standards of husbandry, but with special sanitary methods and segregation from other rodents. A total of 1,526 mice entered the colonies. Of these, 802 were untreated and most remained healthy. Xeroderma pigmentosum is an autosomal recessive disease in which DNA repair processes are defective. All xeroderma pigmentosum patients develop premature aging of sun-exposed skin, and some develop neurological abnormalities due to premature death of nerve cells. The marked enhancing effect of daily injections of 19-nortestosterone decanoate (19-ND) upon granulopoietic recovery of mice made neutropenic by a single dose of BCNU was studeid in regard to the possible regulatory role of CSF. The rate of recovery of UV-irradiated Hemophilus influenzae from acriflavine-sensitized loss of colony-forming ability was studied at various acriflavine concentrations, UV doses, and temperatures.
