BACKGROUND: This study investigated condom use among female sex workers (FSWs) at hair salons during commercial sexual interactions over 1 m … /sometimes/often using oral contraceptives, and having seen a doctor were associated with not using condoms.
CONCLUSIONS: Commercial sex is not effectively protected, and behavioural interventions targeting FSWs should take into account the various factors that are correlated to condom use.

BACKGROUND: Condom-less sex can increase the risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV.
AIM: To characterize the prevalence of condom use at th … analysis adds to the literature on how condom use varies by marital status. We measured the use of condoms at the most recent sexual act, which might not reflect an individual's previous behavior of condom use. Nonetheless, condom use at the most recent sexual act has been documented in previous studies as a valid proxy of condom use over time.

HIV testing and counseling (HTC) are increasingly used in China during routine medical care visits to health facilities. However, limited data are available regarding the association between the utilization of HTC services and condom use among low-paid female sex workers (FSWs) who are at high risk of HIV infection but are hard to reach. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 794 low-paid FSWs in a city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2011. Results showed that 71.7% of low-paid FSWs had utilized HTC services in the previous year and 65.7% reported having used a condom during the la

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the extent to which romantic relationship status influences condom use during vaginal, oral and anal sex among students from 12 universities in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia.
METHODS: A pilot study of 880 students from the ongoing Student Life Cohort in Europe (SLiCE) study. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to establish the effect of romantic relationship status on condom use during vaginal, anal and oral sex in the previous 30 days, while adjusting for participants' age, gender, use of alcohol and other drugs prior to sex, condom-carr

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of an ultra-low-cost uterine balloon tamponade package (ESM-UBT™) for facility-based management of uncontrolled postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) in Kenya, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Nepal.
DESIGN: Prospective multi-centre case series.
SETTING: Facilities in resource-scarce areas of Kenya, Sierra Leone, Nepal, and Senegal.
POPULATION: Women with uncontrolled postpartum haemorrhage in 307 facilities across the four countries.
METHODS: A standardised ESM-UBT package was implemented in 307 facilities over 29 months (1 September 2012 to 1 February

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STI) are a major public health problem. Condoms provide effective protection but there are many barriers to use. Face-to-face health promotion interventions are resource-intensive and show mixed results. Interactive digital interventions may provide a suitable alternative, allowing private access to personally tailored behaviour change support. We have developed an interactive digital intervention (the Men's Safer Sex (MenSS) website) which aims to increase condom use in men. We describe the protocol for a pilot trial to assess the feasibility of …

BACKGROUND: Young people may be more likely to use condoms if they discuss sexual risks with their parents. However, no previous study has examined whether discussing sexual risks with a parent is differently associated with condom use among women using and not using other contraceptive methods.
METHODS: Using weighted data from the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth, we examined condom use at last sex among 1206 sexually active unmarried women aged 15-24 years. Using logistic regression, we examined the association between condom use and discussing sexually transmissible infections (…

To enhance future STI/HIV prevention efforts, this study examined factors associated with adolescents' failure to improve their condom use behaviors after participating in an STI/HIV prevention intervention. African-American adolescent females (N = 205; M age = 17.9) in an STI/HIV prevention intervention trial completed ACASI interviews and provided self-collected vaginal swabs to assess two prevalent STIs at baseline and 6 months after intervention. Analyses compared those who increased condom use after intervention (change group) to those whose condom use did not increase (nonchange group).

The large proportion of adolescents who engage in sexual activity without using condoms, even those with multiple partners, perpetuates the risk of transmission of HIV infections in the community. Few analytic opportunities have allowed us to evaluate the role that specific sexual acts and male latex condoms play in the acquisition of external anal warts (EAW) using longitudinal data. The acquisition of EAWs occurs from epithelial contact with other HPV-infected surfaces, and hence is dependent upon sexual behaviour. Our objectives were to classify the relative importance of condom use, receptive anal intercourse (RAI) and prior history of EGWs on acquisition of EAWs. The observational Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study followed 2925 men over nine semiannual study visits for behavioural and …

This report describes an underrecognized entity of the penis that is associated with chronic condom catheter use and phimosis. Our study group consisted of 7 patients who presented with polypoid or cauliflower-like masses that involved the glans penis or prepuce and that ranged in size from 2 to 7.5 cm in greatest dimension (median size, 2.5 cm). The majority of lesions affected the ventral surface of the glans, near the urethral meatus. The patients ranged in age from 25 to 58 years (median age, 40 years) at the time of initial surgical resection. The preoperative duration of the lesions rang

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 restrictions severely reduced face-to-face sexual health services, an important access point for condoms. We examine whether gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) in the UK had difficulty accessing condoms during the first year of the pandemic, and if so, which groups were most affected.
METHODS: Questions about difficulty accessing condoms were asked as part of a short, online cross-sectional survey of GBMSM undertaken November/December 2021, recruited via social media and Grindr. Eligible participants were UK-resident GBMSM (cis/trans/gender-diverse …

Condom use resistance (CUR) involves use of coercive and non-coercive tactics to persuade a sexual partner who wants to use a condom to forgo use. Given that limited research has explored use of CUR tactics among men who have sex with men (MSM), the present study sought to estimate the prevalence and correlates of CUR among MSM. Participants (N = 261 MSM reporting recent heavy alcohol use and condomless anal sex) completed measures assessing CUR tactics and correlates (i.e., sexual frequency and risk, sexual sensation seeking, compulsive sexual behavior, alcohol use) as well as measures especi

Background: Transgender women and travestis (TWT) in Brazil have a disproportionately high prevalence of psychoactive substance use, contributing to increased vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections (STI). The use of substances before or during sex has been linked to risky sexual behaviors but remains understudied among TWT in Latin America. Objective: To investigate the association between the use of cannabis, cocaine, or crack before or during sex and inconsistent condom use with casual partners among TWT. Results: We analyzed data from 533 TWT in the TransOdara study (2019-2021), w

OBJECTIVES: Older adults remain sexually active and at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This study aimed to explore consistent condom use and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)-eligible behaviours and their correlates among sexually active older adults in China.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study.
METHODS: Data were collected from a multicentre cross-sectional survey in China between June 2020 and December 2022. Eligibility criteria were community-dwelling older adults aged ≥50 years who were sexually active (i.e. had oral, vaginal or anal sex in the past year). In-person questi

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia are common among young people and can lead to serious health issues if untreated. Although condoms are recommended for prevention, many young people report inconsistent use during penetrative sex. Web-based STI testing is becoming increasingly popular, but these services typically offer minimal support or guidance on preventing future infections. The "Wrapped" intervention aims to help young users of web-based STI testing use condoms consistently and correctly during penetrative sex, thus reducing future STI incidence.
