The interdisciplinary symposium of the working group "anemia in the aged" on the occasion of the annual conference of the German Society of Geriatrics focused this year on vitamin B12 deficiency in aged patients. Experts from hematopathology, clinical geriatrics and geriatric hematology presented the case of a 78-year-old woman and an interdisciplinary discussion was held on the epidemiology, clinical aspects as well as diagnostic and therapeutic steps. This article reviews the symposium on vitamin B12 deficiency in the aged in the context of the currently available literature.

The European Academy of Otology and Neurotology (EAONO) has previously published a consensus document on the definitions and classification of cholesteatoma. It was based on the Delphi consensus methodology involving the broad EAONO membership. At the same time, the Japanese Otological Society (JOS) had been working independently on the "Classification and Staging of Cholesteatoma." EAONO and JOS then decided to collaborate and produce a joint consensus document. The EAONO/JOS joint consensus on "Definitions, Classification and Staging of Middle Ear Cholesteatoma" was formally presented at the

The pathophysiology of mental illness and its relationship to the frontal lobe were subjects of immense interest in the latter half of the 19th century. Numerous studies emerged during this time on cortical localization and frontal lobe theory, drawing upon various ideas from neurology and psychiatry. Reflecting the intense interest in this region of the brain, the 1935 International Neurological Congress in London hosted a special session on the frontal lobe. Among other presentations, Yale physiologists John Fulton and Carlyle Jacobsen presented a study on frontal lobectomy in primates, and

This story is of particular interest and importance to Edinburgh and Scottish medicine. It describes the events in one general medical practice in Edinburgh, the Muirhouse Medical Group, and their impact and relationship to the AIDS pandemic. For many, the origin of HIV in the UK is now history. Since the introduction of HIV/AIDS into the intravenous illegal drug using community, much has changed but problems remain that should concern policy makers and clinicians. Reflections on the recent history of the HIV epidemic among drug users in the UK provide important insights into risks for current

Nasal high-flow therapy (nHFT) has become a popular form of noninvasive respiratory support in neonatal intensive care units. A meeting held in Oxford, UK, in June 2015 examined the evidence base and proposed a consensus statement. In summary, nHFT is effective for support of preterm infants following extubation. There is growing evidence evaluating its use in the primary treatment of respiratory distress. Further study is needed to assess which clinical conditions are most amenable to nHFT support, the most effective flow rates, and escalation and weaning strategies. Its suitability as first-

This is a review of the 94th Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatologists, held in Glasgow from 1 to 3 July 2014. The conference covered some of the latest developments in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis and cancer, a follow-up on the methylisothiazolinone contact allergy epidemic, advances in genetically inherited disorders and somatic mutations underlying birth marks. In addition, there was an international perspective on vitiligo, leprosy and HIV, and a session discussing the regulatory process behind pharmaceutical development.

Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) have an excess risk of certain gastrointestinal cancers. Much work has focused on colon cancer in IBD patients, but comparatively less is known about other more rare cancers. The European Crohn's and Colitis Organization established a pathogenesis workshop to review what is known about these cancers and formulate proposals for future studies to address the most important knowledge gaps. This article reviews the current state of knowledge about small bowel adenocarcinoma, ileo-anal pouch and rectal cuff cancer, and anal/perianal fistula cancers in

"Animal Models of Neural Disease" was the focus of General Session 5 at a 2010 scientific symposium that was sponsored jointly by the Society of Toxicologic Pathology (STP) and the International Federation of Societies of Toxicologic Pathologists (IFSTP). The objective was to consider issues that dictate the choice of animal models for neuropathology-based studies used to investigate neurological diseases and novel therapeutic agents to treat them. In some cases, no animal model exists that recapitulates the attributes of the human disease (e.g., fibromyalgia syndrome). Alternatively, numerous

BACKGROUND: Despite strides in early detection and management of breast cancer, the primary treatments for this disease continue to result in physical impairments for some of the nearly 3 million people diagnosed annually. Over the past decade, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) have been developed with goals of preventing and ameliorating these impairments. However, translation of these guidelines into clinical practice needs to be accelerated.
METHODS: Relevant health science databases (2001-2011) were searched to identify CPGs on breast cancer rehabilitation for the followi

An immunological Correlate of Protection (CoP) is an immune response that is statistically interrelated with protection. Identification of CoPs for enteric vaccines would help design studies to improve vaccine performance of licensed vaccines in low income settings, and would facilitate the testing of future vaccines in development that might be more affordable. CoPs are lacking today for most existing and investigational enteric vaccines. In order to share the latest information on CoPs for enteric vaccines and to discuss novel approaches to correlate mucosal immune responses in humans with p
