Examination of corneal microstructure in the quiescent phase of vernal keratoconjunctivitis using in vivo confocal microscopy.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigated the morphological characteristics of corneal microstructure in the quiescent phase of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC). METHODS: Twenty patients with quiescent VKC and 25 healthy subjects were included. In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) of the central cornea was performed. Cellular density of each layer and the morphology of subbasal nerve plexus (SBNP) was analysed. Langerhans cell density (LCD), morphology (LCM), and field area (LCF) were also examined. RESULTS: No differences were found either in cell densities nor in SBNP morphology (p > 0.05). LCD

Allergy and Dry Eye Disease.

Ocular allergy (OA) and dry eye disease (DED) are the most common ocular surface disorders with a potential severe impact on the patient's quality of life. OA and DED may coexist and have a significant clinical overlap. Therefore, clinical features commonly believed to be distinctive of OA or DED may be sometimes insufficient for a differential diagnosis. Alterations of the tear film, epithelial barrier, and corneal innervation are described in OA and can pave the way to DED. Conversely, DED may facilitate or worsen allergic reactions in predisposed (atopic) patients. For these reasons, OA and

Corneal and lens densitometry with Pentacam HR in children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Corneal and lens densitometry measurements provide clinically important information for the evaluation and monitoring of corneal and lens health in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis. BACKGROUND: To compare the corneal and lens densitometry values between paediatric patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and healthy individuals. METHODS: This study included 72 eyes of 72 patients with VKC (25 with mild VKC [Group 1], 22 with moderate VKC [Group 2], and 25 with severe VKC [Group 3]), and 25 eyes of 25 healthy subjects (Group 4). Corneal and lens densitometr

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis: An update.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC) are potentially severe and complex disease in its management among the various allergic eye diseases. In this regard, studies clarified the etiopathogenetic mechanisms. The workup should be multidisciplinary. The treatment includes topical and systemic medications with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant activity. However, a definition of nationally- and internationally-shared diagnostic protocols would also be needed and validated access to therapeutic options of proven safety and efficacy to avoid the use of galenic

[Vernal keratoconjunctivitis].

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis. Chronic inflammatory disease of children and young adults, vernal keratoconjunctivitis is a rare pathology. This allergic ocular pathology should know because it may alter the visual prognosis. Its management is mostly multidisciplinary, associating the ophthalmologist and the allergologist.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is an allergic eye disease that especially affects young boys. The most common symptoms are itching, photophobia, burning, and tearing. The most common signs are giant papillae, superficial keratitis, and conjunctival hyperaemia. Patients with VKC frequently have a family or medical history of atopic diseases, such as asthma, rhinitis, and eczema. However, VKC is not associated with a positive skin test or RAST in 42-47% of patients, confirming that it is not solely an IgE-mediated disease. On the basis of challenge studies as well as immunohistochemical and m

[Manifestations of ocular allergy (atopy) in childhood. Present possibilities of therapy].

Vernal catharr of the conjunctivae is frequently the initial symptom of dermorespiratory syndrome. In all nine children where ophthalmological and other manifestations of varying extent of general atopy were combined, the authors revealed a marked increase of immunoglobulin IgE 220-2230 I.U./ml (normal values up to 150 I.U./ml) and polyvalent allergy. In the treatment of vernal catharr the authors used a combination of antihistaminics and preventive immunopharmaceutical preparations administered locally (Spersallerg and Opticrom) or as general medication (Hismanal and Zaditen), supplemented by

Limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis with a hypertrophic limbal mass lesion.

A case of limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis associated with a hypertrophic mass lesion measuring 8 X 5 X 3 mm is reported. The histopathology of this mass, which consisted of hyperplastic epithelium with eosinophilic infiltration and thickened subepithelial stroma of irregular hyperplastic collagenous connective tissue interspersed with numerous eosinophils and inflammatory cells, is presented. A large limbal-mass lesion such as this has not been previously described in association with limbal vernal keratoconjunctivitis.

Atopic Keratoconjunctivitis: Pathophysiology, Clinic, and Potential New Therapeutic Concepts.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent inflammatory skin disease with a bipolar age distribution in childhood, adolescence and middle adulthood. Up to 50% of AD patients show ocular involvement, which can be potentially sight threatening. Clinically, the majority of cases present with atopic blepharo(kerato)conjunctivitis or atopic keratoconjunctivitis (AKC); other clinical variants from this group of inflammatory ocular surface diseases are keratoconjunctivitis vernalis in childhood and adolescence and allergic conjunctivitis. In addition to the aforementioned blepharitis, keratitis an

Diet and Respiratory Health in Children from 11 Latin American Countries: Evidence from ISAAC Phase III.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The burden of childhood asthma and its risk factors is an important but neglected public health challenge in Latin America. We investigated the association between allergic symptoms and dietary intake in children from this region. METHODS: As part of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) Phase III, questionnaire collected dietary intake was investigated in relation to risk of parental/child reported current wheeze (primary outcome) and rhino-conjunctivitis and eczema. Per-country adjusted logistic regressions were performed, and combined effe
