Worldwide, women report the need for safe, non-hormonal, woman-initiated methods of family planning. Cervical barriers provide such technology but are under-researched and under-promoted. In the USA, there are few studies of cervical barriers among women at high unmet need for contraception. A feasibility study of the FemCap™ was conducted among US women of Haitian origin. Participants were heterosexual and seeking to avoid pregnancy. At first visit, participants completed baseline assessments, underwent group counselling and were fitted with FemCap™. Women were asked to insert or use the cap

Toxicological studies and clinical trials cannot be expected to predict all important adverse effects of medicines and contraceptives. Post-marketing surveillance is essentially an epidemiological task that involves detecting associations between drugs and events. The first alerts about drug safety problems have often come from case reports, but epidemiological studies are needed to confirm adverse (or beneficial) effects and to provide quantitative information. This article illustrates methodological principles by considering three examples from the field of contraceptive safety: oral contrac

Emergency contraception means preventing pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse. This is also called postcoital contraception (PCC) or the 'morning-after pill'. High doses of oestrogen or progestogen or a combination of both may be used as PCC up to 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. The use of mifepristone as emergency contraception has also proved promising. Some women use emergency contraception, but there are many who do not know much about it. Users, providers and other health professionals need to be educated about this method. Emergency contraception does not fall within th

Self-perceived menstrual patterns have been investigated in a sample of 2115 women aged 18-49 years using a postal questionnaire. Seven aspects of 'abnormal' menstruation were defined: prolonged periods, heavy periods, frequent periods, irregular periods, intermenstrual bleeding, painful periods and severe premenstrual syndrome. Women who used oral contraceptives were less likely than other women to report any of the seven menstrual abnormalities except for intermenstrual bleeding and severe premenstrual tension. Women who used an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) reported prolonged, he

Laparoscopic findings in women with clinical signs and symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease were correlated with contraceptive use in a case-control study. Of the 738 women, 544 (73.7%) had laparoscopic signs of acute salpingitis, whereas 194 (26.3%) had visually normal fallopian tubes (nonsalpingitis). Acute salpingitis was seen in 59.8% of the 286 patients using oral contraceptives, in 80.6% of the 227 patients using an intrauterine device (IUD), and in 84.4% of the 225 patients using barrier methods or not using contraceptives (reference group). The objective of this analysis was to evaluate and compare the cost-effectiveness of eight contraceptive methods: condoms, diaphragms, oral contraceptives, intrauterine devices, medroxyprogesterone acetate suspension, levonorgestrel subdermal implants, tubal ligation and vasectomy. Based on a comprehensive review of the literature and various additional data sources, this analysis identified, measured and compared direct costs of the methods, physician visits, treatment of adverse effects and cost of failure (i.e., mean cost for all types of deliveries or first-trimester abortion). BACKGROUND: Since 2002, specially qualified nursing sisters and midwives have had the right to prescribe contraceptive pills for women aged 16 to 19. This arrangement has since been expanded to cover hormonal contraception, with the exception of the hormonal coil. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the arrangement.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The prescription register uses pseudonyms and contains a number of facts about user, medication and prescriber. A database of women born in 1989, totalling 29,821, has been designed as a unit for analysis.
RESULTS: 75 and 79% of the cohort had filled at

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine determinants of contraceptive use, desired future childbearing and sterilization regret among HIV-positive women.
METHODS: One hundred eighteen HIV-positive women, age 18-46, receiving care at a university HIV clinic completed a survey on their reproductive history in 2004. We reviewed their medical records for contraception, antiretroviral medications and HIV/AIDS disease markers. We performed descriptive analysis of population characteristics and logistic regression to assess predictors of their desire to have future children.
RESULTS: Subjec

Syndemic Zika virus, HIV and unintended pregnancy call for an urgent understanding of dual method (condoms with another modern non-barrier contraceptive) and consistent condom use. Multinomial and logistic regression analysis using data from the Pesquisa Nacional de Demografia e Saúde da Criança e da Mulher (PNDS), a nationally representative household survey of reproductive-aged women in Brazil, identified the socio-demographic, fertility and relationship context correlates of exclusive non-barrier contraception, dual method use and condom use consistency. We aimed to evaluate the oxidative stress by measuring the thiol-disulfide balance in women who use either T380A or LNG-IUD as a contraceptive method. Material and method: The study included two groups; 30 women with LNG-IUD and 30 women with copper-IUD. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis as a marker of oxidative stress was analyzed before the IUD insertion and on the 6th month after insertion. Results: The LNG-IUD group had similar native thiol levels with Cu-IUD (293.1 ± 43.5 µmol/l vs. 290.4 ± 42.4 µmol/l respectively, p = 819). In the copper-IUD group total thiol levels were higher than LNG-IUD g

OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature to determine if extended use of intrauterine devices, including the copper or levonorgestrel intrauterine device, beyond approved durations is effective and safe for preventing pregnancy.
STUDY DESIGN: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Global Index Medicus from inception through June 2019. We considered primary studies of women using the T380A copper or currently available levonorgestrel intrauterine devices past their approved duration (extended use). The primary outcome was pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: For women living with HIV, contraception using condoms is recommended because it prevents not only unintended pregnancy but also acquisition of other sexually transmitted infections and onward transmission of HIV. Dual-method dual-protection contraception (condoms with other contraceptive methods) is preferable over single-method dual-protection contraception (condoms alone) because of its higher contraceptive effectiveness. We estimate the effect of progression through the HIV treatment cascade on contraceptive use and choice among HIV-infected women in rural South Africa.
