Although diphtheria is a rare disease it is necessary to swab contacts of all cases in order to identify carriers. The selection of individuals who should be swabbed and the organisation of mass swabbing so that there is the minimum of delay between collection, culture and reporting are described. With this organisation it is possible for a laboratory to culture at least 1000 swabs in any one day.

Serological crossreactivity was analyzed between M. leprae and strains of various species of Corynebacterium, Mycobacterium, Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Streptomyces, and related organisms. M. leprae shares antigens with most of these organisms, and sera from patients with lepromatous leprosy contain antibodies against them. We report four cases of cutaneous botryomycosis. The predisposing factors included alcoholism, diabetes, and trauma. Clinically, the patients had nodules, suppurative plaques, or ulcers. In two cases, Staphylococcus aureus was cultured. In one case Neisseria species was cultured and in another a coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and Corynebacterium species were the only organism cultured. All patients responded to systemic antibiotic therapy.

A total of 2,920 feral goats from pastoral areas of Western Australia were examined and the prevalence of caseous lymphadenitis was estimated to be 7.8 +/- 0.9% in goats presented for slaughter. Head, body and visceral lesions were present in 49.3%, 46.7% and 12.3% of affected goats, respectively. A comparison with previously reported data from sheep has been made and significant differences are discussed. Lung lesions were relatively uncommon in goats, whereas the distribution of carcase lesions was similar between the species. Multiple lesions appear to be less common in goats than in sheep.
