Diversity in the Rubisco temperature response kinetics and photosynthesis among four linted cotton species.

There is increasing urgency for more productive and resource-use-efficient crops to cope with changing climates. One possibility to improve crop productivity is to enhance photosynthesis. Here, we studied four linted cotton species (Gossypium hirsutum, G. barbadense, G. arboreum, and G. herbaceum) for diversity in the temperature response of Rubisco catalysis and impact on carbon assimilation. Compared with the model C3 plant tobacco, each cotton Rubisco had a slower carboxylation rate (kcatc) and higher CO2 affinity (lower KC21%O2) in response to temperature, with the specificity for CO2 over

Aphid-Induced Volatiles and Subsequent Attraction of Natural Enemies Varies among Sorghum Cultivars.

The production of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) is a type of indirect defense used by plants to attract natural enemies and reduce herbivory by insect pests. In many crops little is known about genotypic variation in HIPV production or how this may affect natural enemy attraction. In this study, we identified and quantified HIPVs produced by 10 sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) cultivars infested with a prominent aphid pest, the sorghum aphid (Melanaphis sorghi Theobald). Volatiles were collected using dynamic headspace sampling techniques and identified and quantified using GC-MS. The tot

Insights into the plant responses to drought and decoding the potential of root associated microbiome for inducing drought tolerance.

Global increase in water scarcity is a serious problem for sustaining crop productivity. The lack of water causes the degeneration of the photosynthetic apparatus, an imbalance in key metabolic pathways, an increase in free radical generation as well as weakens the root architecture of plants. Drought is one of the major stresses that directly interferes with the osmotic status of plant cells. Abscisic acid (ABA) is known to be a key player in the modulation of drought responses in plants and involvement of both ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways have been observed during drought. Potential of Pseudomonas putida PCI2 for the Protection of Tomato Plants Against Fungal Pathogens.

Tomato is one of the most economically attractive vegetable crops due to its high yields. Diseases cause significant losses in tomato production worldwide. We carried out Polymerase Chain Reaction studies to detect the presence of genes encoding antifungal compounds in the DNA of Pseudomonas putida strain PCI2. We also used liquid chromatography-electrospray tandem mass spectrometry to detect and quantify the production of compounds that increase the resistance of plants to diseases from culture supernatants of PCI2. In addition, we investigated the presence of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic

Sugarcane under siege: integrated physiological, molecular responses and mitigation strategies to salinity and drought stress.

Saline soil and drought are among the most devastating abiotic stresses constraining sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) production globally, with soil salinity affecting over 1,125 Mha worldwide and drought causing severe yield losses in tropical and subtropical agroecosystems. As a glycophytic C4 crop supplying ~80% of the world's sugar, sugarcane is particularly vulnerable, with threshold salinity tolerance at a mere 1.7 dS m-1 electrical conductivity (EC). This review integrates recent developments in the physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses of sugarcane during stress conditions. Und

Life-Cycle Emissions and Human Health Implications of Multi-Input, Multi-Output Biorefineries.

To meaningfully broaden the supply of fuels for the transportation sector, biofuel production must be scaled up and this requires a wider array of biomass feedstocks, including agricultural residues and organic waste. Rather than pursuing conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and anaerobic digestion of wastes as separate pathways, there are economic and environmental advantages associated with integrating these processes in a single facility. However, existing research rarely goes beyond carbon footprints in quantifying the effects of such a shift in bioenergy production. In addition

Ralstonia solanacearum Secretions Induce Shifts in Macrolactin Composition and Reduction in Antimicrobial Activity of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens BNC5.

Ralstonia solanacearum, a pathogen causing bacterial wilt, threatens global crop production, necessitating sustainable biocontrol solutions. Bacillus amyloliquefaciens is a promising biocontrol agent, but the mechanisms of its interaction with R. solanacearum are not well understood. This study investigates the effects of R. solanacearum secretions on the growth, metabolite production, and antimicrobial properties of B. amyloliquefaciens BNC5. Untargeted metabolomics revealed increases in two known macrolactins (A and M), six novel macrolactins (BA1-6), and one novel polyketide (BAP1), along w…

Argon-stimulated nitric oxide production and its function in alfalfa cadmium tolerance.

Recent results showed that argon may have great potential in both medicines (especially) and agriculture. However, how argon positively influences crop physiology remains elusive. Here, we observed that the stimulation of nitric oxide (NO) production upon cadmium (Cd) stress in hydroponic alfalfa root tissues was strengthened by argon-rich water and/or a NO-releasing compound. The pharmacological results further indicated that above potential source of NO stimulation achieved by argon might be attributed to NO synthase (NOS) and nitrate reductase (NR). Under hydroponic and pot conditions, the

Liquid Biofuels for Transportation: Lessons of the Last Two Decades for the Next Two.

Biofuel mandates and subsidies in several countries led to a 5-fold global growth in ethanol and biodiesel from edible crops in the last two and a half decades. The impacts of this growth for the economy and environment are uncertain and vary with feedstock, production practices, time horizon for impacts, policy parameters, and assumptions inherent to lifecycle assessments and economic modeling. In this context, we offer a perspective on the path forward given that many of the reasons that motivated existing biofuel policies remain relevant. Given advances in batteries and to a lesser extent i

Addressing Magnesium Deficiency Through Crop Biofortification: Plant-Soil-Human Perspective-A Review.

Magnesium is an essential macronutrient for both plants and humans. However, its availability in agricultural systems and dietary intake has been declining, raising concerns about crop productivity and nutritional security. In plants, magnesium plays a critical role in photosynthesis, enzyme activation, carbohydrate transport, and overall metabolic regulation, while in humans it is required for numerous biochemical processes related to energy metabolism, cardiovascular function, and disease prevention. Long-term studies have reported a 20-30% decrease in magnesium concentrations in fruits and

Lupin as a Source of Bioactive Antioxidant Compounds for Food Products.

Four species of lupin (white lupin, yellow lupin, blue lupin and Andean lupin) are widely cropped thanks to the excellent nutritional composition of their seeds: high protein content (28-48 g/100 g); good lipid content (4.6-13.5 g/100 g, but up to 20.0 g/100 g in Andean lupin), especially unsaturated triacylglycerols; and richness in antioxidant compounds like carotenoids, tocols and phenolics. Particularly relevant is the amount of free phenolics, highly bioaccessible in the small intestine. However, the typical bitter and toxic alkaloids must be eliminated before lupin consumption, hindering

The importance of trifluoromethyl pyridines in crop protection.

The pyridine ring, substituted by a trifluoromethyl substituent has been successfully incorporated into molecules with useful biological properties. During the period 1990 to September 2017, 14 crop protection products bearing a trifluoromethyl pyridine have been commercialized or proposed for an ISO common name, covering fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and nematicides. Chemical processes have been developed to provide trifluoromethyl pyridine intermediates, from non-fluorinated pyridine starting materials, at scale and with affordable costs of goods. These attractive starting materials w

A French crop-exposure matrix for use in epidemiological studies on pesticides: PESTIMAT.

Pesticide exposure assessment is a key methodological issue for epidemiological studies. The history of pesticide has proven difficult to obtain from individuals' report because of the wide range of active ingredients (AIs). We developed a crop-exposure matrix, which intends to reconstitute parameters of pesticide exposure in France since 1950. PESTIMAT is composed of tables crossing crops and AIs by year and providing the following metrics: (1) probability (proportion of farmers having used the AIs); (2) frequency (number of treatment days); and (3) intensity (application rate of the AIs in k

Allergenicity assessment of genetically-modified tobacco expressing salt tolerance cbl gene.

It is mandatory to assess the allergenic potential of genetically modified (GM) crops before their commercialization. Recently, a transgene [Calcineurin B-like (CBL) protein] has been introduced into tobacco plant to make the crop salt resistance. Therefore, it was felt necessary to assess the allergenic potential of the cbl gene product, which was introduced and expressed in Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) plant and compared the allergenic effects with the wild-type (WT) counterpart. Bioinformatic analysis revealed that there was no significant sequence homology with known allergens. Also, no dif

Caffeine production in tobacco plants by simultaneous expression of three coffee N-methyltrasferases and its potential as a pest repellant.

Caffeine (1,3,7-trimethylxanthine) is derived from xanthosine through three successive transfers of methyl groups and a single ribose removal in coffee plants. The methyl group transfer is catalyzed by N-zmethyltransferases, xanthosine methyltransferase (XMT), 7-methylxanthine methyltransferase (MXMT) and 3,7-dimethylxanthine methyltransferase (DXMT). We previously cloned three genes encoding each of these N-methyltransferases from coffee plants, and reconstituted the final sequence of the caffeine synthetic pathway in vitro. In the present study, we simultaneously expressed these coffee genes

Soil-Nutrient Depletion and Microbial Community Restructuring in Continuous Celery Cropping: Opposing Responses of Bacteria and Fungi.

Continuous cropping obstacles represent a major constraint in agricultural production, yet the underlying microbial mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This study systematically compared soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity, community composition, and nutrient-microbe relationships between continuous cropping (CC) and non-continuous cropping (CK) celery rhizospheres using high-throughput sequencing, soil physicochemical analysis, and Mantel tests. The results revealed that CC soils exhibited severe depletion of available potassium (AK, 69.9% decreased) and alkali-hydroly

A 20% nitrogen reduction threshold optimizes soil carbon stability and microbial functional resilience under long-term straw return in a rice-wheat rotation.

Reducing synthetic nitrogen (N) fertilizer while maintaining soil fertility and crop productivity is a major challenge for sustainable rice production. Straw return has been widely adopted to enhance soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration; however, the mechanisms by which reduced N input interacts with straw return to regulate SOC stabilization remain poorly understood. Here we evaluated graded N reduction (0, 20, and 30%) under continuous straw return in a nine-year rice-wheat double-cropping experiment in central China. Soil carbon pools, aggregate stability, organic carbon functional group

Streptomyces rhizobacteria enhance growth and drought tolerance in maize (Zea mays L.) under greenhouse conditions.

Drought is among the most severe limitations to crop productivity, impairing plant development. Although plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria have been reported to alleviate drought stress in several crops, little is known about how Streptomyces affect vegetative growth of maize under water deficit. This study investigated rhizospheric Streptomyces isolates as sustainable tools to mitigate drought-related constraints in maize. Isolates CLV16, CLV100, CLV115, and CLV179 were screened under PEG6000-induced water stress (-0.6, -1.0, and - 1.7 MPa, representing mild, moderate, and severe water def

Millets for food and nutritional security in semi-arid Bundelkhand, India: historical, scientific, and socio-economic perspectives.

Millets are ancient cereal grains cultivated for over 10,000 years across more than 90 countries. They are nutritionally rich, providing carbohydrates, high-quality protein, fiber, vitamins, and micronutrients (such as iron and zinc), making them crucial for food and nutritional security. Despite their intrinsic nutritional and ecological value, the total area under millet cultivation declined substantially after the mid-20th century Green Revolution, as government-backed agricultural policies largely incentivized cereal based agronomy. Central India's Bundelkhand region faces food and nutriti
